Should I buy more Warranty?

I never heard of being able to buy an extended coverage once the bike is out of the factory coverage

It's normally independent firms, not HD. My 07 Electra Glide had one from some firm in Germany. I had something like two weeks coverage left when the brains of the bike crapped out. Talk about close!!!!! Almost $1,500 in diagnostics and repair cost me $50.

That's what extended warranty is for.

I'm not sure about the availability of Harley used parts, but I've bought several parts off ebay for other bikes that were as new. Lots of motorcycle salvage companies on ebay. ECM's that come off a wrecked bike could save a lot for those who don't have a warranty. I would think Harley parts would be plentiful, trike specific maybe a bit less.

E bay has lots of good deals on exhaust parts

Seems stock take offs go pretty cheap, I have bought several sets for projects

I would not buy an ECM used for any amount JMO

My dealer had to wait two weeks to get a new one for my bike. An 07 was already in their "not in stock" category and even the mother ship had to track one down which is why it took so long. Once found it was overnighted of course. So there very well may be a time eBay will be your only source or go very expensive and lose a lot of function by going carburetor'ed. If that's even possible to remove an ECM and go basic like that. That's the one thing that scares me about older bikes with little computers on board.

I went to the DiscountESP website and read the ESP contract. It specifically states that if the bike/trike is equipped to tow (trailer hitch) that items will not be covered. I understand the reasoning because there is more stress on components, but so many of us tow trailers. When I do long multi day rides I camp most of the time and can't image not towing a trailer to put everything I need in. Tent, tarp, porta-potti, alcohol, beer and food, clothes, bath items etc. This would be a major obstacle for me purchasing a new Harley because you would give up your warranty if you installed a hitch. Some other manufacturers (Can Am Spyders) even offer hitches for their products and no issues with warranty. I've read where Harley even declined warranty work where a guy had a flag on his bike. Said it put more stress on the clutch and drive train. Geez.

Are the warranty companies ok with modifications like a DK stage one and a Power Vision tuner?

We've never had a single report of a warranty being denied based on any of our Stage I upgrades.

The '17-up Trikes are being looked at closely regarding tuners. While none of our Customers have reported a warranty issue with the Power Vision, we have heard of others having warranty worked denied because of it.

Contrary to the internet myth, AND what many dealers say...

If you have a Power Vision on your bike/trike, that was loaded with a tune from us, fuelmoto or dynojet. You can restore the original factory tune to the ECM, remove the PV from the bike, and they can NOT tell it was ever installed. All they can tell is that there was a tune loaded onto the bike, but they cannot tell what device loaded it. It looks exactly the same as if you had loaded a tune from the HD/EPA approved tuning device.

That does seem to work wit HD but Indian is different. They claim they can tell and will void a warranty for the powertrain. Polaris is downright crappy. No other company seems to have issues. Just them. And the interesting thing is their stock tune has more issues than ANY Fuelmoto or Dynojet tune. Figure that one out.

The answer to the warranty problem is simple.....If you are worried about it , Leave the Trike/Bike stock.......Or as some will say, Its your machine do what you want to it, And then if something gos south ,Man up and fix it yourself....

When i did a job for a customer i guaranteed my work....And if the customer later decided to monkey with it, Or try to improve upon it and then something brakes, Why should that then become my problem....

I always warrantied MY work

BUT if a customer messed with it after it was on his dime

That said, with the M8 bikes HD has gone down a bad road IMO

Seems to me they are forcing us to buy THEIR mufflers , tunes and air cleaners OR none at all

How is that even close to free marketing let alone legal?

I have stock air box and pipes If I have a warranty issue the stock parts will go back on;)

There not saying you have to buy their parts....The EPA Is saying that aftermarket parts have to be certified....And i don't think that many aftermarket suppliers are willing to spend the money that Harley did to do that...

Hypothetically Speaking.....You are on a trip and you brake down in lets say Moose Elbow Montana , Are you carrying the stock parts with you so you can then slap them on before the tow truck gets you to the dealer...

Dont take a 17 or newer Harley in for warranty work with non harley exhaust and air cleaner and see what happens

HD is now starting to cancel power train warranties for NON HD approved parts Especially tuners

I give you the part about the EPA non compliant, Why take chances with a warranty issue

Until HD comes out with a list of approved parts by other manufactures they WILL control the market

Thank the devil for forcing HD into a corner with the EPA JMO

The real fly in the ointment comes down to the tuner in the ECM

If it aint HD you can say bye bye to your warranty for now, til some one decides to come up with an approved tuner by the EPA tho I don't see that coming any time soon

Years gone by HD turned a blind eye to all this

Now with fines levied, I just don't see a dealer willing to lose their franchise or be fined for letting this slide Once again JMO

That is a very real question for me. I travel around North America...we'll be on a 20+ State trip later this year. Fortunately I've never had a drivetrain warranty issue come up on any of my 100k+ miles of riding on trips. BUT, if I did, the following is what I am prepared to do-

Since I only do Stage I upgrades and oil cooling upgrades I only need to do the following:

1. Remove oil cooler and oil filter relocation, putting filter back in stock location. (less than 1 hour work, and no part requirement)

2. Get a stock air cleaner (used take-off) at a local shop, or have one overnighted to me from my shop. (less than 1 hour work and a 1 day delay)

3. Get some stock slip-ons locally (used take-offs). (1 -1.5 hours work)

4. Reflash the factory tune to the ECM and remove the Power Vision (10 minutes)

Yes, this would be a PITA, and add a 1 day delay to getting it into the shop, and possibly a second transpo expense.

But that is worth it for me to have a good running machine for all the time I ride it, rather than settling for a choked down machine, just in case something should ever go wrong and it needed drivetrain warranty work.

There is nothing in a good stage I upgrade that can cause a drivetrain warranty issue...so there is no reason for the warranty to not be taken advantage of.

If I did some modification to the bike that did cause a warranty issue, I would not undo it and try and make a warranty claim. That would, in my mind, be stealing.

Wonder if they saw Polaris getting away with it on Indians and decided why not or was it coincidental. I've heard of 2 powertrain warranties being cancelled due to aftermarket tuners on Indians. Well specifically tunes reflashed, not the actual devices. In these cases Power Vision CX for Indians. Yet the tunes are so much better than the lean EPA compliant things. I'd love to hear about EPA compliant tunes causing engine failures but it hasn't happened. Nor the PVCX for that matter. It's just Polaris's way to get out. I don't care on mine. I much prefer a good running engine to these lean and hot EPA engines. I also wish someone could prove a good running engine is actually friendlier to the environment. I know for fact I don't use as much fuel so how could that be a bad thing?:confused::confused::p:p:p:clapping::clapping::clapping:

Yeah Jack, it's a cluster. The HD Warranty written warranty was, and still is written fine. If you add a part that causes an HD part to fail, it is not covered under warranty.

That is how the warranty reads, and it is perfectly fair. It is also in keeping with Federal Law regarding consumer protection. MF act.

ENTER the EPA...they "forced" HD to sign the Consent Decree that is in DIRECT violation of Federal Law that protects the consumer from the unfair practices you mention above... on 17-up year models. It does not affect 16 and earlier models.

Since the day the news broke on this, in August of 2106, I've been waiting for someone to bring this to court...as far as I know, no one has wanted to take the EPA to court for their illegal CD.

Since it is so easy to get around it, probably no one has seen it worthwhile to, on principle, try and keep them honest.

I understand the HD warranty, It has not changed much in years

Til now

I just don't get a complete power train warranty voided

We really have mixed ideas from several dealers on this

One of these days I am going to call the MOCO to see what is real and fake

My local dealer says pretty much the same, not to worry I am a good customer We will take care of you

This has been a family run dealer since the 40s

I sure hope they mean what they say

The M8 runs a lot richer than the TC

Opening up the air cleaner and exhaust has NOT hurt mine yet and I doubt it will

I knew the chances I was taking and will oewn up if these changes hurt the engine

However if say an alternator or a leaky head gasket should arise I see NO reason a warranty should be voided JMO
