Volkswagen Kit Cars

Well it's not like I went anywhere.....I look in regular and all......just not a lot going on......sickly wife to... take care of.....moved girlie to a dorm at college.....lots work...... so hot out..... getting old and slow.....ect.

Haven't hardly even ridden the scooter this summer.

But....the weather has cooled off a bit and I am working on the funny little car again.

Started glassing the fenders....waiting on it to cure out.....then grind and glass each side in.

And the steering is mocked up.

Those front fenders are all glassed in and are in the process of sanding smooth.

But now that it is daylight loosing time....I don't get much sanding time.....the heavy dusty stuff I do outside of shop.

So right now the big push is the chassis. It is completely back apart. A few smaller details yet to fab and weld in.....tabs, brackets and such.

Doing the welding now.

I did get the welding done on the primary chunk of frame there.

Then changed my mind about something. I had originally planned on brush painting por15 chassis black on the tube frame. An advantage of that was that I could add/change as needed.....and just touch up and no one would be the wiser

I now decided to paint the chassis with red car body paint (for looks).....now the chassis has to be 100% complete....no touch ups.

Do the whole mess went back together and lots of smaller things are being worked on.

Shifter linkage is done....I might modify the shifter itself..... but not done yet.

Clutch linkage is done.

Throttle linkage (on the chassis parts) is done.

E-brake is done (cables not shortened yet)

Brake lines are bend and anchored.

Front suspension is complete (except for mounting the sway bar)

Rear suspension arms are welded and reassembled.....new bearings ect.

And now it is back in it's corner turned around the other way and building the back end. Rear subframe that holds the tail of trans, radiator and hood hinge is all fabricated and tack welded.

And..... I have had COVID again.

Went through the shop again.

I had started making the fiberglass fill ins of the back end......nasty outside work.

And now back to the fiberglass after getting over the COVID....again.

Most of the exterior is done.....still gotta do the tail end.

Next is laying up a coupler layers on the inside.....blending all the pieces together.

I have not gotten much done lately. The wife has been bad sick and some long hospital stays.

It is all back apart.

The fiberglass on the underside of the new body panels is done.....along with some small repairs. So body is ready to start smoothing/body filler/primer.

The flip up hood is half done with the underside fiberglass.

The back end is not done at all.

I changed my mind on the VW steering gear and got a small manual rack and pinion. So I am modifying it into working.

And then have started on making a gas tank and it's mounting.

I got the Kitcar bug about 20 years ago. I traded a 1964 Chev Corvair Monza Spyder (turbo) Conv I was restoring for a 1976 Kelmark GT. It originally came from the factory with a turbo 6cyl Corvair engine. I took apart every nut/bot and body off resto and major modification. I installed a Mazda RX7 Turbo II totary engine with mods to 300hp. The car was 1800lb. It took me 4 years to do the build. I won many cars shows including a big trophy at the Seattle Hot Import Car Show. I once took it to 150mph and had lots of pedal left before I chickened out. I figure it would do 200mph+. In 1st and 2nd gear it would bring the front wheels off the ground at half throttle even though I had put 150lb of lead bars in front. It was controlled by a Halteck computer.

That is a good looking car.

Mine being mid engine will probably keep the front down. I think I am around 1500lbs.

It is still going together.
