TomTom Question

I have an 03 GW with a 15 Roadsmith that I just bought in the spring and drove around 6,000 miles this year (Loved every minute of it :)).

The only problem I had was I used a TomTom for my navagation as it does not have a built in one and had 2 of them quit working. They would shut down telling me they needed charging. So I took the trike to the shop and had them test the amps coming from the trike and they said it was ok. Next I tried the 2 TomToms in my car and it did the same thing, next I hooked them to my laptop and did the same so both of them are shot.

They both worked before connecting to the trike. I would use the suction mount and put them on the windshield which I have seen others do. I have bought a new one but afraid to use it, any ideas or thoughts as to what my problem is??

Thanks in advance

Are you sure you are plugging in correctly? My first TomTom used the mini - USB for power and computer connection. My current TomTom used mini-USB only for computer connection. Will not charge to it. Separate round plug for power only. I have latest TomTom that wife has stashed away and won't give me until Chanukah. Ask me in a month. Who knows how that Rider model connects to plug (on trike, I assume from pins in back).

Just a personal opinion here but I purchased TomToms for Christmas for some folks a few years ago since they were cheap and regretted it ever since. Garmin makes the best product out there and they are reliable. I know most folks use their phones now for navigation, but if you use one of these devices, I can't recommend Garmin enough.

Yep, I've bought two Garmins cheap enough and they work GREAT.

If something happens to one, it was cheap. I don't have to have all updates .... my oldest is not updated since about 2009 .... but most places I go, I know well enough. Like when I go to Lynchburg and cross the James on the new bridge after passing the old bridge on the screen .... I cross where there ain't no road on the new one. :D

My larger later one came with life updates .... still well under $100 & it shows up better on the Trike.

+1 on the Garmin. I had Tom Tom in the past, and while they were OK, the same price Garmin seem to be more reliable, more robust and the routing was better.

I have no experience with anything other than Garmin. That being said if a delivery driver coming to my house comments his GPS sent him to another road I know he wasn't using a Garmin. At least One of the other brands will send drivers looking for my rd to an area in another part of the county. <br />
I do have issues sometimes entering the address on this current Garmin. Just yesterday looking for the best route to a local Honda Motorcycle shop. It couldn't find it although I was only 11 miles away by road. I then entered the actual city it was located in and the closest shop it found was 221 miles away. Don't know why it does stuff like this but...........??

Gps

Been wanting to get a garmon zumo for a while and they came on a black Friday sale and jumped on it. Haven't had a chance to install it but have time now that it seems winter has caughht up us. Anxious to see how all it does works.

I got the TomTom Rider, it came with the mount and cable to connect to the bike, love this thing. Before the Rider I had a TomTom for a car that I used without any issue's, if you are worried about it get another charging cable and all should be good. If I bought another GPS tomorrow it would be a TomTom/. I on four now and with the free updates for life and ease of use it is the brand I like the best. To each his on I guess.

GPS

Ive been using a tom tom now for over 5 years now and wouldnt leave home without it. I suspect you have a charging cord problem. The internal battery should provide power for about 4 hours even if it wasnt plugged in.
