Roadsmith Gas Leak

Hi Everyone,
I have a 98 GL1500 SE with a new Roadsmith Kit. I have a problem that developed when I put my first tank of gas in it. It is leaking gas on the left side after I come to a stop and there is a small puddle on the ground. I thought I had overfilled the tank so next time I made sure I did not. Same thing. After a while of riding on that tank the leak stops unless I make a hard right turn and it starts leaking again. My dealer removed the wheel and retightened the connectors for the gas line but that did not fix the problem. I live on an island and don't have much of an oppertunity to ride a few hundred miles to take it to a Roadsmith dealer. I tried to get a look under it but it is too low to the ground to see much.

I did notice that the filler cap tube has 2 nipples on it at the fill end. One of them has a hose connected and going somewhere but the other is just open. I wonder if that is where the leak is coming from and if I should try and block it off.

I was wondering if anyone else has this type of tank and there is an open nipple at the top as well. Thanks for any info.

I don't have a 1500 but what you're describing doesn't sound like it's an issue with the Roadsmith conversion, unless you have the optional auxiliary gas tank Roadsmith offers as an option. If not, it seems like you have a problem with the bike's gas tank itself. Could it be possible that it was some how damaged when they installed the Roadsmith conversion? When you fill the tank, are you able to see any wet areas on the tank (remove seats, panels) to at least localize where the leak is coming from? Just suggestions. Hope you find it!

Thanks Rich, Sorry about that, I forgot to say that I do have the extra gas tank conversion and the above description is on the Roadsmith. Sorry for the confusion

someone else had a problem with a leak on a auix. tank on a new conversion. can not remember what conversion though.

Thanks Guys, I'll wait till they open next week and give them a call.

I have the Roadsmith conversion with the aux. tank. On two occasions I filled the aux. tank just after transferring all fuel to the main tank. Problem: I forgot to TURN OFF the pump switch the first time and accidentally hit it with my knee the second time. Result: Bike quit after a tenth of a mile and was leaking gas on the ground from the main tank. After switching off the leakage stopped and I was able to continue on my way.

I'm wondering if that might be your problem?

I'm pretty sure the problem is in the aux tank. It seems to happen if I am on the main tank or the aux tank. With mine the gas does not get transfered into the main tank. It closes the main and draws from the aux when the switch is in the aux position. I too have experienced getting about 50 feet and the thing shuts off and sure enough, I hit the switch and put it in the center no gas position.

My trike with CSC kit had a gas leak. But it sounds like you have a different configuration on your Roadsmith so I'm not sure that what happened to me would apply in your case. But I would definitely contact Roadsmith. I'd also take it to a Honda dealer for a look-see.

Good luck!!
