My '21 Free came with an oil cooler with a fan. I know I can turn the ignition on and roll the throttle grip fully back for 5 seconds to see if it's working, BUT, I've never heard it come on when I thought it should, like in 98° heat stuck in a traffic jam. Does anyone have an indicator light for when it comes on? Is such a light available? I've never had a problem with the trike in those conditions, but I would be more comfortable if I knew the fan was actually working.

I’m not sure, but I’m thinking that it can be switched off/on. Check your owners manual for the process. FWIW, I can hear my fan come on when I shut down on a hot day. I don’t recall seeing a light.

I'm sure it can be done. Haven't looked at the schematics but you could use posi-taps then run the wiring up to the bung in the handlebar nacelle then connect to an led lamp. I think the wiring is in the same caddy as for the parking brake.I tapped off there to run wiring up to an installed led for my parking brake. The 2018 Dakota Digital speedometer didn't have the parking brake featue lamp in it.Spent an hour on the phone with an engineer scratching his head trying to figure out why.Nice guy tho.

I'm also not sure my fan is working properly. I own the factory service manual and do not see anything on how to test. Just remove and replace.

It should be in the Touring Electrical Diagnostics Manual.
I believe you should be correct, but it's not. The fan is not even mentioned in the regular manual, only the Trike supplement. I did take it out for a spin, 100 degrees , and it's on, oil was at 215, but does not stay on after the engine is shut off, and does not come on with just the ignition switch, only after it's started. Did not hear it before, only after checking it at the oil coolerIMG_5150.jpeg

Wait a minute. Since all you want to know is when the fan comes on try tapping the lamp in series with the fan on circuit.
I'll have to break the power wire to the fan and run it to the light and then back down to complete the circuit. That should work. Of course, should the light burn out for some reason I won't have a running fan.

WHY would you do that?????? DON'T break the Brown/Blue power wire to the fan. just tap it and bring a single "power" wire up to your LED so it will light when to fan is on.

You don't want a series circuit anyway. Running the current that the fan draws though the light would probably blow it. Definitely parallel circuit.

Ok, one wire to the light and ground to the chassis. Positaps ordered, have the lights and wire. This is the wire I'm going to tap off of (the red one):

You SURE the RED wire is to the fan and NOT the Stator....
Follow the wire to make sure.
Looks like the power wire to the fan should be Brown/Blue

It's the only connector coming off the fan. Plugs into the pre-existing connector on oil cooler equipped HD's. The Freewheelers, of course, came set up from the factory. Pic is right from HD. I will be certain that it's running to the fan when I get around to doing this. Even though I've never made a mistake before. 😉

Even tho posi-taps are fairly water resistant, due to the location I like to coat them with liquid tape. Once everything is working of course.

I have a plastic "skid plate" covering that area to help prevent road scum and water from collecting on all those connections, but I had planned on sealing it regardless. What is "liquid tape"? Don't think I've ever come across it before.

Liquid Tape comes in a can with a brush in it. You brush the mixture on what you want covered and it hardens covering the area. It works quite well for those hard to reach areas. Auto parts stores have it.

That red wire goes directly to the fan:

Used a PosiTap off the red wire to the indicator light which I grounded to the cover. Light came on as soon as I turned on the ignition. Was not expecting that. I figured that wire would only be hot when the fan needed activating.

Looks like the Ground (Gray/Black) wire is the controlling wire.
Constant Power(Red wire) and grounded when it turns on.
You will need to run a black ground wire from your LED's black wire to a Posi-tap to the black wire on the fan also.

Sounds like a good plan. Need to go get more wire. Thanks.
