How many wear your helmets

From day 1, when I'm on either the bike or the trike, there is a helmut on my head, long pants and boots/shoes appropriate for riding. I also wear leather gloves and long shirt or jacket.

I have always worn a helmet and recently I just ordered a new three quarter white one with a pull down clear shield. The first ride after having the cataract operation on the right eye (left one to be done next month) The wind really hurt that eye. I had to complete the ride, getting off at the next exit and turning around, with my right eye closed. I'm hoping that this shield will stop the wind pressure.

We wear an HJC open-face with a dark full shield in the summer.
In the winter we wear a full face modular HJC.
We like to think we're protecting the noggin but we really wear them for use of the cb between our 2 trikes.
We also put 1/4 to 1/2 mile between us so that we won't both be in the same accident - at least there will be one of us to deal with the aftermath and still around to take care of the dogs!

Thirteen years ago if I had not had a good helmet on I would be dead. A kid driving a car crossed the center line and hit me head on, I spent the next two years being sliced and diced. I still suffer every day and some days are worse than others. That helmet had some nasty gouges and scrapes that my head could not have handled. Yes I wear a helmet, even tho Michigan no longer reqires it. The day of my accident was hot and muggy, and I was going to leave my safety equipment in the trunk. 5 minutes later I put it to good use. I recommend you use your equipment all the time.

Arizona does not have a helmet law but I can't imagine turning the key without wearing one. For some weird reason I just don't think a dew rag is going to hold in my brain if I happen to get into a wreck.

A friend mine told me that helmets have an expiration date as do bullet proof vest. I have never heard this, is he correct?

He is correct. The UV rays from the sun break down the outer shell in 3 years or so. I do about 30,000 miles per year and change helmets at least that often and also any time one is dropped over 3'.

On a side note, a lot of people do not wear full face helmets. My take on that is that if you think your face isn't worth saving, it probably isn't. None of my business. Personally I remember watching the chin bar on my full face grind up asphalt as I slid down the road.

I have only been riding but a very short time and always wear a helmet.

Having said that, I also spent a significant part of my life in the military so that all of us could have the right not to wear one if we so choose. I will also vote against absolutely every legislative initiative to force me to wear one. It is my decision to make.

I have a feeling that most who don't wear a helmet are not going to post it on a forum thread. I do 100% of the time, but when I travel through states that don't have helmet laws, I notice that a helmet is a fairly rare sighting. Although I totally believe in the wisdom of wearing a helmet, I almost feel somewhat hypocritical to suggest I am much wiser than those that choose not to, since I am "wise" enough to wear a helmet, but still ,in reality "dumb" enough to ride a bike in today's traffic period! Especially after having two rubber side up moments in the past! Got to think out loud and laugh at myself sometimes. Live and let live! (Or die trying!!! :xzqxz:)

PS. Please don't blast me. Just thinking out loud!

Ride On!!!

OUCH! Your logic is making my head hurt! :xzqxz:

Moved to SC in 2006 from NJ which it was the law to wear them. SC has no helmet law so I gave it a try for about 4 years until a guy in a suv made a left in front of me and I went through my windshield. Been wearing helmet ever since.

I recieved a safety recall notice on the helmet i sometimes wear. The recall was on Outlaw Helmets,AX-3,AX-4,& TG-5.Series/9999.If anybody on here has one of these helmets & didn't get a notice you can call Tegol,Inc. at 866-371-0281.NHTSA Recall # 13E-047

I have a nice helmet with intercom which matches the Mrs. helmet and a half helmet. I wear either one when ever I am riding.

Re: Do you wear a Helmet?

Only when I ride my trike

Lol, good answer.

The only time I didn't was many years ago when I was riding around the western US states (I was allowed to once upon a time). When we
hit a State that didn't have a helmet law I took mine off just to experience it. Nowadays I would never ride without one. Safety first of course, but I also have quite long hair and that would be quite a mess without a helmet.
