A question for anyone who has actually removed the voltage regulator on a trike. I followed the instructions in the service manual. I removed three bolts (have not found the cable strap to cut). The problem I encounter is "Pull downtube assembly away from frame to access locknuts securing voltage regulator".

I do not like to force anything but this assembly does not move anywhere near enough to gain access to the two locknuts. I'm going to guess that the rubber hoses will perhaps kink and allow some movement. So, my question again is..... how do you get the downtube to move. In complete honesty, this is a 2014 tri glide and my manual is a 2016 touring.

What started this project? I purchased the DK oil filter relocation setup and ran the hoses. No complaints, just telling what I was doing to start this. When I started the engine to check for oil leaks I noticed the voltage gauge showed 12 volts. I have always had closer to 14 volts. I checked where I ran the oil lines and could see no problems (I learnt many years ago not to ram and shove harshly with my hose). I did a voltage check and load test--- 12.7 volts). When I started the machine it showed 12.7 volts (did not go up nor down).

So, I want to remove the regulator so I can check that and the stator. Until I can hold the voltage regulator in my hand I will not know if I "knocked" the connector loose, but I do not think that is the case.
Does a regulator or stator die that quick?

I welcome any advice, and am willing to take the verbal abuse if I can get an answer.

Unfortunately, I’ve never had to remove one personally…. You stated that you have a service manual, but will reattach below what I have…
I have both a Hard copy of the service manuals & PDF copy saved on my phone.
The trike supplement does not cover the voltage regulator, so it is typical on our trikes and 2 wheeled bikes.
Attached are screenshots on removal & installation from the service manual.
Hope it helps!

UPDATE ----- I took my service manual and went to talk to the service department at the local HD dealer. It appears the service manual is missing the portion where you are instructed to drain the coolant, disconnect four coolant hoses, and remove the assembly. After completing the voltage regulator work flush the cooling system and refill.

First question, did you have either brake pedal or lever pulled to light the brakelights?
Second, use a volt meter off the battery. look at the voltage before starting, start the motor and watch the battery pull. Then raise the rpm to see if the charging system takes over.
I don't believe the wires detached off the back of the regulator as there are locks that hold the wires on.

Thanks for the update and the addition info that the service manual itself is not complete.
Glad you got that figured out! 👍🏻
