What did you do to your Trike this week?

Larry, what did you have done? Anything special, or just routine stuff, like oil/filter change, lube some joints, or just a 4,000 mile checkup?

Routine maintenance, they changed out the fluids and filters, checked wear items like brake pads and tire wear, check and tighten any fasteners that may have loosened.

Ordered a new shifter rod due to wear on the joints, they said it should be covered under the extended warranty ?

Always seems to run better when they finish.

Thanks Larry!

I tell you what being in Daytona and watching all the trikes go bye, tells me the boomers are not giving up their rides.

Even Janice said to me, have you noticed, more and more people are turning to trikes to extend their riding. I said yes, compare to last year, and it was the first day in Daytona.

Just watch the trikes go bye and I got some new ideas on LED lights to make the trike more visible at night. Trike watching is great!

The Tri Glide is slitting i a nice warm garage while I'm sitting in a ice cold ❄️ Rhino 🦏 And loving every minute 👌

Changed out one of the ground effects ditch lights.

The design for a simple bulb replacement to the ground effects was a total disaster.:gah:

I really enjoyed trying to remove a small phillips head screw that holds the bulb socket assembly and ground wire in place by feel only. A visual to this area was not easy.

Reattachment of the bulb assembly was even more enjoyable. :sarcastic:

There are two scenarios to the problem with the bulb, we'll actually more:

1. They never run (light) to what the original packages says: 50,000 hours, yeah right.. they last two weeks at the most or 1,000 hours, if that!

2. The optimum placement of the fixture to show to best light is always in a position where it is very difficult to put in and to replace a burnt out bulb. True!

3. Thinking about it after it burns out, you would say, if I knew it was going to burn out so soon, I would have not put it there!

Hey, I have done the same, now to replace them with LEDs, they SHOULD last longer! Well, you hope!

Clutch handle is loose, need to replace brass bearing and helmet holder because it is bent. How it got bent, I don't know.

So a ten minute job, but local Honda shop does not have new bearing, need to order some.

Should be in today at about 4-5 PM...Just my luck!

Sounds like a great time to me! Don't get lost in Texas, and watch out for livestock in the middle of the road! Them there cattle don't like to stay in the pastures in Texas, they seem to think the grass is greener in the highway medians! LOL

Just added a new trailer hitch to my trike, so next up is to find a good used trailer to pull! Then I can take more stuff and stay longer on the road, yeah.......

Boy, you better watch it with a trailer, the Sky is the limit! We use to go with a backpack, now the kitchen sink come along!

Well, we need this and that, but you never wear it! LOL

If I were you, do your homework by asking people how they like the brand they are pulling, how much it holds, and how it pulls.

It is very difficult to buy a trailer and not like it for any of the various reasons. But, when you get the right one, you will just stand there and smile when someone asks you, how do you like it?

Love mine, hold 200#s, pulls straight as an arrow. Clam shell opening..So sad, company went out of business and I can't find out if anyone took the company over to build the same type trailers.

Good luck and do your homework!

I had the bank angle sensor reprogramed for a trike so I can take corners entirely too fast without the engine shutting off.

This I need to know more about! If you took a corner too fast and lean too much, engine shuts down? What do you have for a trike?

Please, explain!

Thanks,

Rosy

Yes, it is a safety feature on most 2 wheel bikes so if it falls over the engine cuts off. Well, when you add a conversion kit the bike no longer leans, but the centrifugal force on the bank angle sensor, when taking a corner aggressively, trips the sensor. Most trike riders don't take corners hard enough to trip it, but just 1 time when going into a corner too fast could be dangerous.

I accidentally did it the first time on a tight on ramp to a highway. I was pushing it pretty good and the engine just shut off an displayed TIP. Once I discovered what caused it I purposely road a twisty road faster than I normally would and was able to recreate the shut down 3 times within a mile.

Most dealers are not aware of this potential issue with conversions or how to correct it but by researching bank angle sensors I was able to print instructions from the Harley Service Website that stated for trikes or (bikes with added side car kits), the bank angle sensor can be reprogrammed to trike or side car enabled. This will cause the sensor to behave differently and not shut the engine down unless there is a roll over.

I ride a 2016 Harley Slim S with a Frankenstein trike kit. I have found that most modern 2 wheelers have this sensor.

We had a bike behind us in Daytona and the headlight was hitting my rear view mirror in my truck. I was wondering if any of the headlight was giving him any light on the road?

Years ago in NH, when we had our bikes/trikes state inspected they would check your headlight to make sure it was shining at the proper height. They would put the bike a certain distance from a wall and adjust it to a proper height on the wall. They don't do that any more, so I have noticed headlights are not shining correctly.

Headlights now days are adjustable, but do people make sure they are correctly positioned, maybe not, because many of the bikes/trikes have extra driving lights to make sure everything is bright ahead of you when traveling.

The lights on my trike were a mess. I checked the alignment using the method in the maintenance book and they were sure off. I got everything in alignment then I added the running lights and the tint to the passing lights. You can see them in the post 1268. I sure am happy now.

No requirement here in NM for inspections. Jim

Thanks for the information, but what does the manual say how to? I wonder if this method can be used by other trikes?

I wonder if the old method is still viable now days? I wish I could remember the distance and height to align the headlight.

Maybe another member has the information that was used.

I use 25 ft back. You then measure the height of the center of the light to the ground and that is the height that you put on the wall. You can also to a left and right by putting a vertical line also and make sure the center of the trike is lined up on center.

Thanks that was great information!

Do you think riding two up would change the setting, or does the trike stay steady enough in the front end as not to show enough to adjust?

Rosy

Gorilla was correct with the distance and height. That 25 ft is an important measurement, HD says 25 ft to the front axle. The height is also adjusted on the low beam led light.

I am sure having 2 up could make a difference. I made sure the air pressure was accurate and had the wife on the trike in the riders seat, not the passenger seat as the trike supplement states.

I refused to buy a 100.00 socket to adjust the passing lights. I made my own special socket. A six point deep thin wall socket and a hand grinder and a few minutes and I have a socket that I will probably use 2 times in my lifetime. Jim

Desertclassic, That is a lot of lights in the front! How is your night driving, is it bright? I have a set of driving lights in front, low to the road and they give me plenty of "frontal" lights when traveling at night.

Great job on your front lights.

I have only taken one ride at night since the install and alignment, very good. It is so bright here in the desert that I wanted to make sure that I was seen in the daytime. Jim

That is great a Jim!

I have noticed as I get older, my eyes do not let in light like the use to. I was able to see at night when younger, but now, I need all the light I can get to see.

Notice it big time on a rainy dark night, more so than other nights, when everything seems very-very dark.

So, make the night, light again, by adding more lumens to the front of the trike. LOL

Old People Rule!
