Surprise! HD extended warranty program just might be worth it!

I drove down to Phoenix today so my wife could get her hair done. While waiting on her, I went to the HD dealer down the street where I purchased my used Tri Glide to find out if the Road Zeppelin Air Adjustable Seat is part of the warranty since it is not functioning. I was told that if it was not purchased and installed by HD by the original owner, it would not be covered under the HD lifetime warranty. Well he pulled up the VIN and lo and behold, the original owner had added the seat when originally purchased. It was along with 80 additional upgrades that are all now covered as long as I keep the extended warranty going. So for $50 I will be able to get a new seat.

I know there are plenty of discussions of the value of the HD branded extended warranty but this is an example when it will almost pay for itself after the first incidental issue.

You are one of the lucky ones! Since your TG is Pre-'17, when all the EPA-driven issues that caused HD to clamp down on mods, and the dealer did the install, you are covered. With my '14 TG, I had the luxury of relying on the factory ESP as well... Rush pipes, even a PowerVision and a DK Dual-Cool system were acknowledged and everything was covered. $50 deductible and you are out the door! Not so much since I got the '17... which is why I canceled my ESP and went to Jim Palmer for the Eagle Guardian plan. Enjoy your warranty as long as you can!

so I just purchased a 2020 triglide in March without the Extended warranty. Told them I would think about it. Still have not made up my mind, but am looking hard at picking it up.

Any more input from out there?

+1 on Jim Palmer... His warranty package will not be voided if you install tuner or other aftermarket stuff (AC, exhaust, etc.) on a Harley from '17 MY and newer. Canceled my HD ESP and used the money to purchase his. A number of my friends have done likewise.

On my 19 I only added slip on mufflers and a different air cleaner (same air box). A few months ago I was ready to take a refund for my HD extended and purchase a warranty from Palmer.

I travel all year and really don't have a "regular" dealer I use. However, I have talked to a couple service managers at two of the dealers I end up close to every year and they both said with the modifications I have made there shouldn't be any issues using my HD extended warranty if I have an issue. Add a aftermarket non-Harley tuner and there could be according to them.

The short version, if I hadn't already started the clock ticking on my extended I would purchase a package from Palmer.

I wanted to update this thread and let you know how it went.

I went to the local dealer and they agreed it was a problem with the seat. They had to order one and it finally came last week. I went to the dealer this morning to have it installed. Being a small dealer, I was able to observe the mechanic swapping out the seat and then scratching his head. The new seat did not operate when plugged in. Well an hour later the mechanic finished with the install. He told me that the real problem was the wiring harness to the seat and not the seat itself. He stated that there appeared to be a relay in the seat circuit that he did not know why it was there and not a HD part. He rewired the circuit and was able to make the seat work. I was told that because the seat was ordered, they would call it warranty work even though the seat was still good and the real problem was the wiring harness that was not done according to HD specs. (I am not sure you could say if this was or was not done at a dealer!).

Bottom line, the dealer did me right. They verified that the seat was not working correctly and ordered a new one under warranty. It was their error that it was actually the wiring harness and not the seat. They replaced the seat, repaired the wiring harness and called it warranty. It feels like a whole new riding experience!

I actually bought the HD warranty on my 2011 UL from Jim when he was with Kutter. Super nice guy to work with. Was thinking of getting a warranty from him on my 19 TG but in reading all the complaints on American Guardian, I'm getting a little scared. Does anyone have any actual repairs that were covered by American Guardian?

Is he still using AG ?? I thought he was selling a diff ESP

I actually don't know that for sure but I should have asked. There I go assuming again.

He is definitely less expensive if the warranty is actually honored.

If it was Jim honoring the warranty I would have no hesitation but he is limited by what the warranty company says.

Maybe someone who has actually had a claim can chime in with their experience.

I would never own a Harley without a warranty of some kind. I've only had 2 and both had warranties. And both were well worth the cost. Pre-approval was required on the last one but it was still worth waiting when the bill for repairs came in at a little over $2,400. So my part of $50 I paid with a smile.

I'm not knocking Jim Palmer but I hope you all know you can buy a warranty yourself from different companies, you just have to search for the best one for you and then you don't need Jim Palmer, he is not doing this for free, there is some kind of payment to him or he wouldn't be doing this, just a thought for everyone to consider, there are quite a few companies out there selling warranties for everything.

As Udawg said there is quite a few complaints with American Guardian, I looked it up and it is not good if that is the company Jim Palmer is using

All for now Trampas

I bought an ESP from Jim on my 2018 TG and it is administered by American Guardian Warranty Services, Inc. I never used it and cancelled ti when I traded for my 2020. I plan to purchase another just before the factory warranty expires on the new TG. I did see that American Guardian is accredited by the Better Business Bureau and has an A+ rating - https://www.bbb.org/us/il/warrenvil...n-guardian-warranty-services-inc-0654-1004199 which gives me a bit of confidence that they deal ethically even if there are complaints and dissatisfied customers. Of course you never hear about the claims that are handled and repairs covered with no problem and I guarantee you that any company administering any type of extended service contract whether on autos, motorcycles, ATVs, homes, etc., will have a slew of complaints and many of them are not justified imo.

And as far as Jim or any agent not working for free I ask, who does? Someone somewhere along the line is getting remuneration whenever you purchase one of these products. It's baked into the price and the Harley dealers make an absolute killing off their ESP contracts.

So yes I'll go back to Jim when the time comes for an ESP on my 2020 TG and be glad he is there to assist.

Yes I totally agree with you, I didn't go to the BBB and check them out, just saw the complaints and that was enough for me, guess I should have went further but oh well. Not sure what they have paid out to customers for repairs or what and if done in a timely fashion, maybe that is where the complaints come from, not fixing what is broke on the bike. I was just saying you can search and do the warranty with a company yourself and not go thru Jim Palmer, haven't got a bad thing to say about him, don't know him or anything, have always heard good things about him for serveral years on hear and other forums.
