Road inside the Tunnels never get sunlight....the ice freezes into the cracks and splits it more every Winter....always nice to find a Deer in the darkness unexpectedly (several times), or worse, a stalled VW Jetta abandoned and with the lights out
Thanks Skuuter for helping a Florida boy learn about freezing ice in cracks and explaining the rough pavement in those tunnels.
A deer and VW in a tunnel? You can ride all your life and expect to see something new, but some things just can't be anticipated. Going into a tunnel puts you from bright sunlight into dim light or dark requiring you to lift your sunglasses to see. I've tried to just ride thru it, but if I had your experiences, not lifting my glasses may have caused me to crash.

Is anyone besides me getting a really bad case of "WANT TO RIDE THE BRP"!!! I can tell this is gonna be a very long wait....

Count me in. Been 2 years since I rode it and after reading all this I'm ready to go. Last 2 times on the BRP we had to turn around because of heavy fog in Oct. Ended up at the casino in Cherokee drinking hot chocolate and coffee.

I'm riding the whole thing ( Skyline Dr/BRP/Cherahola) on my way back to Chicago from Rolling Thunder at the end of May. It will be the first vacation that I haven't planned every route/gas station/motel before leaving due to trying to get as much stuff in as possible for a week. So I'm planning to just take each day one at a time with a leasurly pace. My ONLY concern is rain. I can tolerate anything except rain.

I'm going north to south, leaving Washington right after the parade on Sunday. Hopefully I won't run into too much traffic Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

I've already done the Dragon so I won't be doing that this trip.

I'm really looking forward to this trip - never rode the whole thing before, just a couple miles of it.

Keep the tips and hints coming. ThumbUp

I have ridden the Dragon twice and I noticed the last time that the state has widened the curves with an additional five or six feet of asphalt on the curve shoulders. Beware of the idiots on the crotch rockets who think it a thrill to run wide open but lose it on the curves. You don't want them crossing the center line and coming at you so be prepared to evade.
You will definitely encounter Tennessee State Troopers and county mounties who are assigned to the Dragon to enforce the speed and reckless driving laws, but they are no problem if you use common sense and ride respectfully. Enjoy yourself.

They are in the process of repaving the tunnels. We were up there, only southern most part, but all the tunnels there have been repaved. Don't know how far north they have gone.

We plan to ride the BRP and Skyline Drive when we are leaving THE RALLY on Sun. morning.Suppose to be going northeast but the weather shore aint looking to good now.RIDE SAFE

All you people: What are your favorite Must-see, Must-experience stops along the Blue Ridge Pkwy?

We rode the brp last year. Started in Cherokee and went all the way up, turned around, and came back down. Took 7 days. Went to the Natural bridge( imo a must see) and spent a couple of days around ashville ( went to the Biltmore estate). Its also worth taking a few minutes to stop at the viaduct and walk the trail that leads down under it. We are planning to take 8 days this year and include Mt Airy and the skyline drive. Eating at Mabry mill is also on the to do list.

We just rode about 100 miles on the BRP on the way to Rolling Thunder. We stayed at the Peaks of Otter and it was nice and reasonable.
