Just bought a VW trike for my wife. It needs a good bit of work but nothing I am not willing to do. I have a bill of sale but there is no vin, and there is no engine code. I am lost and hate to pour love into something we won't be able to ride..... My wife is going insane to move ahead with the project. We are in Georgia and my county (Screven) has never had a trike registered so none of the girls at the tag office are able to tell us how to get it titled and tagged.

Not sure how it is there, but here in Washington state a vehicle has 2 pieces of paper ... A title and a registration ... Title is kept at home and used to transfer ownership .... Registration is on vehicle and is shown to the boys with the blue lights when they pull you over ... Some states have trikes registered as motorcycles seeing no difference in the two ... Others register trikes in their own catagory and even have riders get a special separate trike drivers license ...

I'm in Colorado and I believe for something like that, treat it like a ground up custom build, you would take reciepts for all components and the finished vehical with you to Highway patrol. They would exam the vehical and you would be given a serial number to stamp on the frame so you could apply for a new title. But I've heard engines without serial numbers can be a problem here. They tend to assume they where stolen at sometime and are less likely to accept without original engine number. Could be completely different where you are.
Best of luck.

Tell the Gals at the local DMV to get in touch with their headquarters. You aren't the first to try to register a trike in GA and you won't be the last. Your local Gals need to get educated. You didn't mention if you got a title or bill-of-sale or if you got any paperwork. Or, pick up the phone and give someone at the DMV in the capitol a call. Make a friend of a local Highway Patrol officer.

Opps, I didn't pay close enough attention to the original post stating that he got a bill-of-sale and no VIN.
This can't be the first time the GA DMV has had this type of request. Someone there know what needs to be done. Be relentless. If one person doesn't know, ask to be transfered to someone that does. Over, and over if necessary.
If the DMV doesn't cooperate, contact your State Senator and/or Representative. They should have someone on staff that assists their constituents.
Good luck.

Not sure how things work there, but in Louisiana, title work for moveables can go through your local Justice of the Peace. You basically file an $80.00 suit against the state for a title. The Justice of the Peace researches everything based on the information you provide, and after you satisfy everything the JP needs and pay any additional expenses incurred, he/she issues a judgment in your favor ordering the state to give you a title. I'm not sure what all the JP requires, but an inspection by a law enforcement officer is one of them. If, for some reason, you cannot satisfy everything that is needed for the title, you're still out the $80.00. Good luck.

FOR ONE THING YOU DON'T WANT TO MAKE THE GALS AT GMV MAD AT YOU, GTINN,
HOW CAN YOU GET A BILL OF SALE WITH NO VIN#? ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS GO TO YOUR LOCAL BIKE SALVAGE YARD AND BUY A BIKE NECK WITH A VIN# AND USE IT ON THE TRIKE YOU HAVE OR BUY A BIKE NECK WITH A CLEAR TITLE AND GO WITH THAT,
IF YOU WANT A GA TITLE, THEN YOU HAVE TO GO THRU ALL THE PAPERWORK THRU DMV HERE IN GA AND DO IT, IT IS NOT THAT HARD TO DO,
I DON'T USE TITLES FOR MY TRIKE, I AM HAPPY TO RIDE IT WITH A TAG AND LEGAL REGISTRATION,
GO TO THE www.gagmv.gov snd look a round and you can find out what you need there,
IF YOU GO TO YOUR LOCAL DMV OFFICE AND THE GAL CAN'T HELP YOU OUT, THEN ASK TO SEE AND TALK TO THE SUPERVISOR THERE, BUT YOU NEED TO BE POLITE OR YOU WILL GET NO WHERE,
HAVE A GOOD ONE

Custom build
Take it to your local BMV
They should be able to assign you a VIN, which you stamp on the trikes frame.
Then the BMV can allow you to apply for a title and registation/license plate.

if he does that like you say, then he is one lucky fella, and the ga dmv has changed their laws again without us knowing, grinn

I am curious, he hasn't been back on here since his 1st post, just because he has a bill of sale, does it have a vin# on the bill of sale?

Probaly is somewhere, but if you were to change the motor at some time, that would alter the vin#, grinn.
How do you do it ? Where you are at?

Every state has their little differences when it comes to composite motor vehicles. That being said, the first thing they want to know is ;are the parts from something stolen or have you aquired the parts legally. If you used a motorcycle front end, the neck more than likely have factory numbers on it. you will need prove you are the owner and they might/will check it against a national stolen database. Next is the Volkswagon parts .... the vw motor has no traceable serial number on it so thats no problem. The car vin number is stamped on a plate in the front trunk (no problem to trike builders ) and also on the tunnel back by the tortion tube. It all depends on how much of the tunnel was cut off as to whether or not that number is still physically on the trike

Some states are easy on safety inspections and some ( yea connecticut is one :banghead:) you might as well be trying to build the friggin space shuttle :(

The more reciepts you can show them for ANYTHING ( mirrors, tires, wire ,tubing, ect) the better off you will be.

Good Luck

Checking with the DMV here in Michigan one has to have reciepts for all major componets, motor frame etc. Don't hurt to have your reciepts for all the other goodies one put on the trike too. They're basicly looking to see if anything comes across as stolen but also they want to be sure they're getting all their tax dollars. Once they're satisfied there it has to be inspected by the local police dept, then back to the state office where they'll assign you a vin number. Put that on per their instructions and back to the police who verify it has all been done. The last step then is back at the Sectary of States office who'll let you pay their taxes and issue a title & plates and a registration paper. Title is kept at home, Registration is on you or bike along with proof of insurance. The last time I did all this was back in early 70's with a VW trike I built up. It's a long drawn out process and took every bit of 3 months to complete.
no urgency at all on their part that's for sure.
Checked this week to see if anything had changed, NOPE, still same ole routine there.

BTW No title means no license plates here in Mi

Well we all have had a great discussion on this topic, but Windblown the orginal poster has not updated any of us in the 2 months we have been talking about this. I wonder why.
