A Day in the Life...

Black ice can be some nasty stuff.

17-18 years ago my son found some. He had borrowed my pickup while his car was being worked on. Hit black ice at night and slid off the road and rolled down a hill. HP said it was 192 feet from start to finish, and they figured he rolled 6 to 8 times:

IMG_20180117_0001.jpg

He crawled out and walked a half mile to a farm house. Scared hell out of us to get a phone call like that.

Went out the next day with the tow man. He was wondering how he was going to get down there to hook up. I pried the door open, the truck started right up, and I drove it up the hill to the road.

My wife's dad had passed away a short time before this. Everyone told my son that Grampa was a guardian angel that night. Other than feeling the next day like someone had beat the crap out of him, he walked away without a scratch...

Wow, that is scary. So glad he was fortunate and not injured. My daughter's friend I mentioned was home from college for the holidays and returning with her family from a relative's house in early evening on a nice (but shady) county road. Her dad was driving and in a curve encountered black ice, slid off the road and hit a tree. Girl's head hit the window (no side curtain air bags back then) and did not survive. Sometimes it doesn't take much unfortunately.

Everyone be careful out there.

Thanks for asking Kevin. Her surgery was textbook perfect. She's doing great and I know she will be glad to have the knee pain gone after she heals and does the rehab.

Snow is fine but you know in our part of the country ice lurks and sometimes it is difficult to detect. About twenty years ago our daughter's best friend was killed when her car ran off the road after encountering some black ice in a curve. Not even going very fast. I am very respectful of road conditions and in my old age just don't want to push it. Be careful out there.

That is good to hear!!! Rehab can be tough, but the results are worth it.

Yep, the ice surprised me yesterday, and I have even more respect for it now.

We live with way to much traffic and besides that the DOT puts nasty chemicals to melt snow and Ice Mag. chloride. Not mention old fashioned salt and Calcium nice stuff. bad enough wet but when dry get in places you never thought of. ride safe and have a great time  Fred

I don't like traffic anytime...when it is snowing or ice....you would not believe some the crazy stuff we see down here. lol

Crazy! Very glad to hear it was not worse for your family!

Having spent most of my life in warmer climates, I've very little experience with snow and ice. It is more a novelty here. I was very surprised by the ice yesterday. It was much more slippery than ice I've ridden on before.

Actually talked with Devin about it this morning. Realized ice can form with different surfaces, depending on the temps.

Here's looking at warmer days!

That's a whole different life up your way...and I gotta say, after the last week of cold we had... I am definitely NOT cut out for it!

brrrr

Kevin

I have no desire to live in a place where you can walk on lakes. I would be terrified of falling through the ice and freezing to death.

My idea of ice fishing is pulling a package out of the freezer.

Two guys I knew - one was the son of one of my bosses, and the second lived across the street from us when he was a kid - was fishing a few years back. The first one went through the ice, the second one jumped in to rescue him. The first one got out, the second not so lucky.

It can be a dangerous world, but it's not as bad as riding trikes and bikes on the road. We know the hazards every time we step out the door...

No ice fishing for me.

We had a monster thunderstorm roll thru last night...lasted about 8 hours.

But this morning on the ride in, it was sunny...very wet, but sunny and 56*.

:)

I rode my Rhino on our lake Saturday..The ice was over a foot thick, Thick Enough even for Rosie O'Donnell to walk on..

Left work after dark last night. Wind was gusting up to 30 mph...but it was still in the 50's.

Nice ride home. :)

This morning it was back in the low 30's. But it's temporary. Will be back in the 50's tomorrow.

I said yesterday "no ice fishing for me".

But then I got to thinking about it last night!

I would LIKE to go ice fishing.

I just don't like the idea of all the cold, day in and day out, that would be my life if I lived where I could go ice fishing.

It's not that hard living up here - you just need an ample supply of antifreeze...;)

Yeah, I'd slip and fall on my ass even faster. lol

The Northern cure for winter Parked Motorcycle Syndrome. So what if there is a snowbank in front of the garage door?

Could try something like this....

Strange morning...

One cager pulled a weird u-turn in the middle of a 35 mph curve, at the same time another cager started driving the wrong way on the road (to get to a mailbox). It was a bit of an obstacle course to get thru their antics.

Then, not a mile later down the 2 lane road, there was a car traveling between 30 and 40 in a 55 mph zone, plus weaving like drunk at 8 am this morning. Took a while to get past them safely.

(This is a road I travel almost everyday, and it is not unusual to not see a single other vehicle on this road.)

BUT, Before all that! This morning THREE of my Four key fobs had dead batteries. ALL of them were working 3 days ago, at least one of them was working yesterday.

Very weird that all three would fail within a couple of days of each other.

I put fresh batteries in all four...and went on to work.

Must be a full moon.. of course, around my part of the world its a full moon everyday...the twits are always behind the wheel terrorizing the rest of us. Plus the wind spirits mess with the static electricity and screw up everything.

Be careful out there and thank you for the reminder I asked my Bride to pick up a couple new 2032's to be installed when winter cover comes off. And I pray that is soon I am so much missing that ride, and she misses using her new Challenger R/T20171027_144454.jpgDSC00551.JPG
