The wife and I & 2 sons & wives and a friend went to Sturgis again 8/1/15 had a ball and hit every good road in SD & WY again.
Left Sturgis heading for Bear tooth and Yellowstone just outside of Cody WY started having lots of noise in bottom end of engine, stopped at Cody custom cycle (Ray Burns a ex Harley tech nice guy) he said it was in lower engine. I made arrangements with the local T shirt Harley which is part of Bear Tooth Harley in Billings MT to leave there for pick up (which everyone there was really great also) Bear Tooth picked up and has new engine on the way, said it was totally destroyed not repairable.
Had to rent the only car available for days in Cody $189.00 a day plus gas 3 days to get back to Wichita KS.
Could not get this car until next day so had to stay another day.

And now I have to go back and get it 940 miles from my house.
Has anyone else had experience like this?
It seems Harley doesn't help much with these expenses.
Let me know your experience with issue like this/
Thank

Gigantic bummer Jack!! Did/Do you have the HD extended warranty or Road America road side service?? I would be interested in knowing how you come out IF you have/had either one of these services, as I have both as well as other towing/road side services from my other vehicle insurance companies.

I like wise would like to know the outcome especially if you have Road America. Had an incident several years ago with Road American and was NEVER satisfied with the outcome. I always carry the RA premium coverage. Still had issues.

Sure hate that you had such bad luck. That certainly takes all the fun out of a trip. Good luck maybe all the bad is gone.

It would be interesting to know what went wrong, I'm betting one of the made in Mexico by the cheapest supplier lifters went south and trashed the cam chest.

I feel your pain Jack. Blew my engine on way back from 50th Sturgis in 1990. It was a '71 HD XLCH. Got a pickup ride into Sioux Falls to HD dealer. They arranged to ship it back to my home. Drove me to motel and then Greyhound terminal next day. Really outstanding dealer. I'd like to say everyone on bus was strange. Myself included. Hadn't shaved for a couple weeks.

Saddle bags over my shoulder.

.....Then for 60th Sturgis, with new wife on honeymoon, on way home. '77 HD FLH. Running great day before. Blew engine in NE. Still managed to Limp into a town to dealer. Ended up renting Uhaul and driving bike back myself. Still had fun along way.

Note 6 other trips to Sturgis with no problems. About 2000 miles 1-way for me....but I always take scenic routes.

There was a point to all this, but I don't remember it now.

And then we move on...ThumbUp

Mine did too. I had a Royal Star Tour Deluxe (stripped down Venture). Never had a problem. Only put 3500 miles on it in the 6 years I had it though. Bought the TG on June 11...turned over 2000 on the way to work tonight. The Yamaha just wasn't a Harley. No offense intended in saying this though. Yamaha make a hell of a good product.

I used my 09 RSTD for a down payment on my Venture/Hannigan conversion. I like my Yamaha(s) which I have around 100K on them (total) and never had a problem other then finding a bubble on my front time when doing my "pre ride" inspection.
At times I have thought about getting a HD but there are only 2 or 3 models that appeal to my eye. I figured I'ld spend about $10K less, have a better warrantee and also have something with a style that I like. Plus I save hundreds if not thousands by not purchasing HD clothing and other stuff to make that company richer.

I ride a 2011 Tri- Glide that I bought new. Before the manufacturer's warranty ran out I purchased an 86 month extended warranty from the HD Dealer. Had choice between Harley and Zurich. I was told Zurich covers more moving parts.

Last November I started hearing a small rattle and had the dealer check. They replaced 2 cylinder & piston kit, camshaft away rear and front, chain tensioner, sprocket retention, chain tensioner, 4 roller tappet, oil pump, and compensator, fly wheel kit. Along with misc. gaskets and fliuds. (This is the mechanics description on the work order) At the time of this work I had 98,574 miles on the trike. This work was covered under warranty.

I now have 115,600 miles and it runs great. I do not have a mechanical background or the proper tools to maintain my trike, but I listen and feel for something that's not right and take it to my dealer.

I also purchased the Shield Maintance from my dealer. They performed the Maintance schedule listed in the OWNERS Manual every 5000 miles. Check and tighten fittings that have vibrated loose, etc.

I know that not everyone can afford these services and not everyone puts enough miles on their trike to make it cost effective. But not everyone on this site has the ability or time to maintain it themselves.
This is information for those members.

I still do safety and maintaince checked every time I ride.

Also, I might be lucky to have a great H-D Dealership to work with.

Sometimes I feel "insurance poor" since we pay so much for all the different insurances, health, auto, bike, home etc.. However when the time comes and you need it, it's all worth the cost.
Sounds like you got your monies worth out of the Insurance!!:clapping:
