I changed the fuel filter in my 19 tri glide today. Here are a few pictures.
First prepare the tank to prevent scratching.
Next remove the ring that holds everything in place. I like to use the proper tool but a hammer and drift will work if you're very careful.
Bring the filter assembly up out of the tank.
Remove the clip holding the filter container to the top plate
Remove the filter.
Replace the filter, and don't forget the new o-rings and reassemble in reverse order. Not a difficult job at all.

That’s hilarious, I’m working on mine this morning also! 😆

I was putting the Aux fuel tank in my 2020 Ultra with Roadsmith yesterday and had to pull the top out of the main tank to put the fuel fitting in. While I had it out, thought I’d pop open the filter and check it.

I was shocked. The filter was black and had some crud in it with only 20,000 miles. I don’t know where the person who had the bike before me was getting their gas, but it definitely was not clean.

Made a flying trip over to my local H-D shop 50 miles away and called ahead to have them set a filter out. Got there just as they were closing. Filter was $20.49 + tax.

There’s some junk in the bottom of the tank that I can see with a flashlight, so I’ll be dumping the fuel this morning and flushing it out before I put it back together.

The filter I replaced was totally black also. I changed mine with 37,000 miles. Without taking all of the innards out of the tank there's no way I can look into the bottom of the tank with a flashlight. I'm sure there's some gunk in there, who knows what's coming through with the gas from the pump. I haven't seen a fuel filter from any bike that's been changed that wasn't black.

Awesome !!! And it’s not hard to do either.

These are one of those “overlooked-outta site-outta mind” maintenance that indeed should be changed sooner, rather than later.

I did a video on my 2014 about a year ago that can help others do this easily on their own.
Also shows changing that check valve hose assembly too.

Nice to see a post where the tank is protected, youtube is full of experts who work over a fuel tank with nothing protecting the tank, they must be great mechanics that never drop anything...

Thanks for posting this, now I`m thinking about changing the fuel filter...
Dan, I don't cover mine but it wasn't cherry when I bought it. Plus, I'm used to working at heights so you learn real quick not to drop things. Lol.

Well, you can try not to drop things, but when you are working over an expensive painted surface it takes little effort to protect it.

I was a jet engine mechanic for 45 years and I always covered any opening I didn`t want stuff to fall into.

Everyone fumbles with stuff sometimes, no matter how good they think they are.
I really bugs me to see these experts not protecting the parts, very unprofessional.
