What did you do to your Trike this week?

I have a questions for All:
What are you running for tire pressures on your trike?
How are your tires wearing?
Rear suspension straight Axel or IRS?
How does your passenger like the rear tire pressures, bumpy, shaky, or smooth?
How are your tires balanced, and are you getting good results?
Type of tires in rear, bias or radial?
I run, 41 front MPA reverse mounted..ceramic beads..
22 rear Michelin radial..
Very good results in the front..17,000 so far, look new.
Over 8 years on rear....need to replace soon because of born date on tires, not because they are worn out.
Thanks for your answers to the questions, could help newbies with their questions.

Front Tire 36 Rear 21 - Wearing good - Straight Axel - Smooth ride - Balanced weights - Rear Dunlop P205/70R15 Front Dunlop D402F Radials

Thanks.....
If enough people write, will start a spread sheet to see what are the most used tires, pressures, balance items.
Thanks for getting back.

Great, Avon first trike tire! How is it working for you?
Smooth, bumpy, noisy, or just a great tire. How many miles do you have on it?
Need input on the Avon tire.
Thanks for the info.

I'm not seeing great reports on the Avon Cobra as in longevity, some think the ride is much smoother. So yes, Avon reports would be good.

I had an old Cobra in the front years ago, it was smoother, but wore out fast. It scalloped something wicked, but I always wonder if I have had ceramic beads, would it have done better? I'll never know, but someone in TT land may have done it with ceramic beads on a Cobra. If so, please tell us about it.
Thanks
Rosy

Haven't tried the Avon trike tire yet but have had good luck running Avon Venoms and Cobras on my last few bikes. Friends I ride with are running them all with good luck also. Got a regular Cobra on the front of the trike now (weren't making my front tire size in the trike tire till recently) and it is performing well. The key to long wear is to follow Avon's tire pressure recommendations. Talked to a guy running the Avon Cobra trike tire on his CSC GoldWing trike at a charity ride recently. He said it handles and rides better than the brand of tire he was running prior to the Avon.

I have 4k on the Avon trike tire, wearing very smoothly, sticks like glue . The trike had a 5 year old Dunlop E3 on it when I got it that had 5k on it and I rode it another 5k before switching. The Dunlop wasn't a bad tire but the Avon is night and day difference for the better. If it will last at least 12k it will probably be the only tire I will use. At 4k its not showing much wear . Hope this helps.

Be interesting to see the mileage posts at some time in the future when those that have the Cobra have run them to the wear bars. The smoother ride posts are certainly impressive. I couldn't bring myself to make the switch if the mileage wasn't there. It's all in the choices we are willing to make.

Questions, how is the Avon mounted?
How is it balanced?
You are correct on mileage. My old Cobra also was smooth and sticky, but the mileage was not there. Again, not given Avon a break because on my trike, since the Avon, I am balancing with ceramic beads which I think are superior to weights. Would the old Cobra been better with ceramic weights, I will never know, unless I switch to Avon in the future.
Right now my MPA is wearing like a rock. It sticks good, but not as smooth as my old Cobra.

I just took the wheel off myself and took it and the tire to my local bike shop and he mounted and spin balanced it with normal weights . I think the trike tire mounts with the arrow ,be sure and get the trike specific tire . I know a guy who put the AV71 that doesn't say trike on it and he is having cupping issues with it !
I have a MPA on my 2 wheeler and it rides good mostly but I have issues with it around 35mph that bugs me ,it has a buzz or hum that I really don't like. Good luck with your decision .

Thanks, but need more info on the new Avon before I switch.
A few members are running the new Avon, so, as they get more mileage on the tire they will report back to handling, wear, and balanced. So, I will gather info and see how it does.
Thank for the info.

Alignment

As I was looking at my trike to see other possible hold down points for the trip to Florida, I noticed my right side rear tire was wearing more on the inside than out.
Have an appointment tomorrow to have my rear end aligned and swap rear tires so they will wear even. But, if they get it done correctly, it shouldn't matter if you swap, correct!?
I also need to check my born date on the tires to see if they need to be replaced, they can go another 3 or 4 years, but, they could be aging from the inside, so you would never see it. I haven't noticed any dry rot, or stress cracks, but you never know.
I would not be nice to be doing 60 and have a rear blow!
Rosy

I would have it aligned and still swap the tires only takes a minute. And yes if they are close to the expire date new ones here I come. Why take a chance right. Same with my oil change on my 350z never get enough miles to change the oil 7000 max I do about 3000. But all ways get close to the old date. So I change it. Can't be to careful with your life. ;)

Alignment finished on trike. Rear tires swapped.
Tire born date were 2008, now to find out what is life of Michelin tires, 6-8- or 10 years. Does anybody know?
My shop said tires look great with lots of thread left on tire.
Thanks

How Long Does a Tire Last?

Car makers, tire makers and rubber manufacturers differ in their opinions about the lifespan of a tire. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has no specific guidelines on tire aging and defers to the recommendations of car makers and tire manufacturers. Car makers such as Nissan and Mercedes-Benz tell consumers to replace tires six years after their production date, regardless of tread life. Tire manufacturers such as Continental and Michelin say a tire can last up to 10 years, provided you get annual tire inspections after the fifth year.

I would say your OK as stated with inspections..

Thank you alienwulf, that is very helpful, but come next year, there will be a new set of Michelins with ceramic beads @ 22psi mounted on my trike.

I bet I could get another 8 years out of the set I have on there now, the thread is that good!

Love my Michelins!

Replacing the dumb air temp gauge with a combo oil / cyl head temp gauge, wind screen, removing the Garman Zumo 665 gps holder and wiring.

Are your gauges analog or digital?
Where are you putting your GPS?
If you can, will you post pictures. Like to see where you installed everything.
Thanks
Rosy

Putting in Marlin analog gauge in same place as air temp location, removing gps set up due to not want to spend the $600 for the unit. I have a old Garmin that vacuum sucks to the wind screen corner . No pix yet will work on that. Google Marlin Gauges or Marlin Clocks.

Are the gauges going to be handlebar mounted, or are you going to replace then in an existing location?
Cant wait for pics!

Don't worry about the gauges, just put the trike in the trailer and head south for the winter!!lol

Trike is in the trailer! BUT, we have to go someplace else for the Holidays. Not as warm as we are right now, but relatives will be there! LOL
Hey, trikermary would like to join your caravan going to Dover in August.

I got the trike body painted last week to repair the hit and run scratches and all the other ones that were already there. Today I dropped it off to have expel applied to all the surfaces that face the road. Expel is supposed to be an upgrade of the 3M ClearBra. I needed that as the bike is white and doesn't yellow over time. At least that's what the dealer told me. Will pick it up on Saturday. Hopefully it works. I've had to spend about $1,000 total I wasn't expecting to pay.

Great Brian, should help in controlling the dings from rocks and debris.
I found black Rustoleum paint matches my trike perfect, so I use it to cover the dings. Use a q-tip to put it on.

Good luck and we will see you and Cynthia this summer.
Let us know how well your new "bra" works.
Thanks for sharing!

Will do. I plan on taking it out for a ride on Sunday if the weathermen are right. 56 degrees and mostly sunny!

Rosy,
I almost forgot. I finally have an avatar! No, I didn't suddenly become computer literate, that will never happen. My son did it of course. Those are the ramps I was telling you about a while ago. 9 ft. long and they fold up and fit in the back of my truck nicely. Bought a heavy duty wheel chock and the bike doesn't move at all. Took it on several vacations already and it doesn't move at all. Now if I can only figure out how to back up a trailer.....

Backing a trailer is an art. Ask Big Dog how he backs his 18 wheeler up.
I can do it, but not as well as some people because I don't use it enough. A few yeas ago when I was burning wood, I used my other trailer to haul the wood, so I got pretty good in backing. The enclosed trailer which has my trike is another story, haven't use it that much, so it is a learning process.
Good luck, and as they say, practice makes perfect! LOL
Rosy

You are correct Jonesy, that was the answer for learning to "stear" your trailer, and it works.
My problem was, I needed to look over my shoulder to do the old trailer, now it is a different story because this trailer is do big, all you see is the nose! LOL
So, learning to stear your trailer using your mirrors like "real" truck drivers do, is completely different. I just take it slow and easy when I do my big trailer. Janice is a big help when we are parking the trike trailer, with her hand signals.
