What did you do to your Trike this week?

Boy, some places the pollen is really bad...Black trikes look yellow and as the wind blows it is a yellow haze..
So, what temperature was it at your place?

This week I finished a new model, my first GL1500 which I did for a good friend of mine. As with all my builds this one is a custom one of a kind. It did involve some minor head scratching but in the end we got the job done.
Next will be another unique GL1800 and a bool black Yamaha Royal Star Midnight Venture.

Are you changing the oil or does it look like molasses coming out, being so cold?
How cold is there?
34F here in NH at 9:42AM..

Good for you.
I can't get to mine, it is still in the enclosed trailer from our trip, so no work can be done to it till it gets taken out.
So much to do, and So little time!

New seat.

My new seat from Corbin came in and was installed today. Just beat the rain. Had a Harley Sundowner but it was too low and pushed me too far forward. I'm 6'4" and needed something with less of a bucket so I could sit further back.
Corbin now has seats for the Freewheeler so I printed a copy of their design and sketched in the changes I wanted. Customer service was excellent and the seat arrived just as I'd designed it. No extra charge for the mods. I'll have to wait a couple of days for this Louisiana rain to stop to try it out. Was very comfortable sitting on it.

Please post pictures, I am sure tall Trikers would love to see how you made out with your design!
Also, please post your results when you get a chance after you take it for a long ride.
Thanks.

Avon Front Tire

How many miles do you have on your Avon front trike tire? Have you read anything about this tire being better for "cupping"?
The AV71 is said by Avon to be good for 15,000 miles.
Thanks for your information.

CSC Trike

Well after some health issues, I finally got back to the trike project. I have wired in a voltmeter along with wiring and switches for the gps and Sirius radio. Changed out the grips and floorboards and brake and shifter levers, Attached a trailer hitch and connected wiring for the heated gear.

Finished for this riding year and going to get back in the wind and sun!

The great thing is you are over your health issues! The next best thing is, you will be riding again, that is also great!
You have been very busy, because I know what it takes to run wires on a trike. Not your everyday wiring job. Careful planning is required. Do you have photos to share as to how you did it, and how it looks. I have been thinking on wiring a volt meter, but need some guidance as to where it will look good and functional.
Thank you for sharing!

Holy Bat Tires..Now the motor and shinny stuff are done I turned my attention to my tires. They didn't look bad so assumed all was Ok. Wrong the date code on the front is 1st week of July 2007 and the rear are 2nd week of April 2007. Nine years old pulled front wheel and took to Indy for a Commander II and bearings. Later today I will get rears for it. I had noticed all were Dunlop and the front was a H-D Dunlop but thought it was newer. Anyway learned my lesson on tires for sure.:AGGHH:

Tire Born Dates

Now here is the question, where did you pick up on the born date check of your tires?
I know some of the members have been tooting about born dates, and I did a story on my son's mother-in-laws Honda car with canvas showing because of born dates?
Anyway, that is great, because yours truly is also going to check my rear Michelins and make sure they are good to go!
Ladies, make sure you check your tires for born dates, if you do not know how to read the born date, call it up on Google and they will explain how the numbers are read.
If you did check your tires, please let us know your results.
Thanks.

It is an oval circle with the week and year in it. If you don't see it , it is probably on the other side of the tire.
Tomg

Tell that to a Lady, you may need to explain it a little more. Like the weeks are numbered 1 through 52 then the year..Like 1109.. It means the eleventh week of the year 2009.
I does get tricky if you run tires with the dates on the other side.
Thanks Tom..I read you added beads to balance your front tire on your Stallion. I did the same with my Goldwing a few years ago.
Hey, how many ounces of beads did it call for? Did you add the valve stem core so the beads will not clog your valve stem?

Replaced Rear Tirers

I replaced my rear tires last week. They only had 30,000 miles on them. However, they were ten years old (how time flies when you are having fun). :)

Did you get a chance to look at the tires closely? I was wondering if they showed any faults due to old age.
I have heard, at times the tires will deteriorate from the inside out, but I have never looked at old tires.
I know the only set of old tires I saw were the ones on the Honda car, and they were very bad..Chunks, uneven wear, and canvas showing on the outside of the tire, while the center of the tire looked great, like they could go another 10,000.

On mine the rear tires looked pretty new, the only real give away the rubber was hard. The front was also hard and some fine cracks were in between the treads. After some research I found that even if never mounted and used tires will lose their oil, dry out and the bonding to the belts can be compromised. Bottom line warranty's end at 6 years for a reason from born date. My new Commander II which is sticky as hell on the tread has a born date April 2015 so already a year old. For 123.00 40.00 mounting and another couple hundred for rears going down to America's Tire this weekend the price of safety is a given.:clapping:

I look at it this way, there is NO price for safety. No matter how much it cost, it could save your life, your Love ones, or someone you have never met!
I also believe, every rider/driver should have the responsibility of knowing their ride is in top condition to ride. It is Your responsibility to make sure all is good and safe. Many riders/drivers get on and ride, never thinking about what should be done, looking over their ride to be sure it is good to go, or knowing maintenance needs to be done on your ride.
I also believe in listening to your co-riders, when they say, your headlight is out, your front tire looks like it needs replacing, or did you know there was oil under your ride after you left. Not, that you knew it, but they could have a point you never realized.

I compared the wing trike to other bikes in the same cross winds.

This is something that I wondered about for years.
To compare the cross wind component I took out the 1200 Beemer after coming home on the 1800 Wing trike. It doesn't fit this thread what I did to the trike , can't delete this , so I started another post in Gen Discusion.

We did wax it again and talked about a skid plate.
Make one or buy one ? There are mixed opinions.

While the GL is a great bike both the 1500 and 1800 are aerodynamically unstable. While I have not worked on any Victory Visions I would guess by the design they would also be affected by the wind. I have studied the shape and airflow regarding the GL and other and you are correct that wind is a big factor. It is not so much the sides being non-transparent to the wind but rather the faring which adds top drag and vortices to the airflow. This is why conversions like the R-18 are poor as airflow is compromised over looks. I think most people have learned to accommodate the wind behavior as there is no easy fix. Tall windshields do tend to worsen things but not too much will help control the effects of wind on this design.
I once met with a gentleman who was Chuck Yeager's aerodynamic space scientist and he took one look at my GL1800 and his first words were "you realize this design is inherently unstable." I answered yes I am aware however I don't ride at 8,000 mph.
He returned with "good point"
I learned a great deal from this man and took his suggestions to heard in my own designs.

Nothing much, Gonna get gas for it tomorrow morning .. I am a little disappointed with my dealer though... When i bought the Trike they never told me that i had to put gas in it every 180/190 miles or so....:laugh:

I believe lots of factors can create wind shear on a trike. All the way from windshield to tires, but how to cure it on your specific trike is a mystery.
Yes, as with all dealers, gas is an option, but not to buy. I have never seen on any brochure where you could finance gas as an option, like power windows, seats, or engines! LOL

Got my rear tires today Michelin Defenders 205/70R-15. What a difference in the ride nice premium tire's like the Commander on the front they really stick to the road. Was worried about spending so much money but very happy with the out come. The guys at the tire center were happy to get to work on the trike, was their first one. ThumbUp
