Trike auxiliary tank

I for one would love the idea of having a few extra gallons of gas just in case. I put 106,000+ miles on my '07' Ultra before trading it in for my '14' Tri-Glide so we do a great deal of riding. No way could I give up my trike for months while a tank is made, but I'd buy one once their available. That and I could keep up with my two wheel buddies and their 6 gallon tanks since they're getting 40 to 45mpg instead of my 30mpg.

How do you guys/gals get 200 miles on a Triglide tank? I don't ride all that aggressively, and average 28mpg. That's something like 160 miles and sucking fumes. I'm refueling around 130 miles. If i'm riding unfamiliar territory I carry a couple 1 gallon containers on the tour pack rack.

Your post scares the hell out of me. Not so much the post it's self but your signature line "577" cam. I get about 36-38mpg with the stock 103 setup right now, about 180-190 miles before I start watching for a gas station. Am going to install the S&S 557H setup this next fall (after the warranty runs out) and have been told to expect a 6%-8% decrease on my mileage but 25% OMG...can see why you're talking extra fuel. Think I need to do some re-thinking if what you're say is true.

On getting extra fuel on the trike, my legs and butt need a stretch after a couple hours in the saddle.....so 6gal is perfect.

Comical thread. To address the OP, I don't live in the area or I would be willing to volunteer, depending on the season. I'd love to have a few more gallons available as I am one of the ones that get in the mid 20's for mileage. I always ride 2 up, and a lot of it is highway...75 really eats the gas. There have certainly been times, fighting head winds, that I didn't get much over 100 before I was looking.

The reason I find this comical is there are so many variables to MPG, the only real way to compare 2 bikes (or trikes) is to ride the same terrain together and compare. Outside of that it is irrelevant. MPG's change depending on the terrain, altitude, riding style, and so much more. In addition, MPG is different in different areas of the country. For example, we used to have a Kia Sorrento. We'd typically have to get gas at 350 miles or so. We did a trip in it one year from Nashville to Omaha, and west, and found we could easily go 400-450 miles on a tank. Hell, I've been to Florida I can't tell you how many times and my MPG's were always higher heading south than they were heading north.

If tuned properly you shouldn't see a decrease in your fuel mileage with a cam change, sometimes you can see an increase. Both my dads 09 and the 2010 I had would get between 35 - 38 mpg when running 55 - 60 mph in 5th gear on a nice lazy 2 lane road. On the freeway running 75 mph they would both drop to between 25 - 30 in 6th gear depending on how much head wind we were bucking.

As you said, 6 gal is about perfect because I like to stop and stretch a bit also. I normally make it a point to stop every 100 miles to stretch and take on fuel.

I got about the same MPG with the stock cam too. Probably not more than .5 MPG between the two cams. Don't see how people get 34MPG on a triglide????

If I rode my TG gently, like a lotta guys do, I could easily get 34 mpg or more. But as I said earlier, that is just no fun, and fun is a good thing! Top freeway speeds here are posted at 80 mph. If you do 75, you are holding up traffic even in the right lane. A lot of two lane roads are posted at 65.
If it was so important to me to get a whopping 18 more miles to a tank, I guess I could make myself crawl everywhere. 30 to 32 mpg makes me happy.

As others have said, its all relative to how fast you go. Another piece of the puzzle is what gear your running in. If your running along 50 - 55 mph in 6th gear you will use more gas than running the same speed in 5th. I could get 34 mpg all day long running 55 - 60 mph in 5th gear tolling along on a nice lazy 2 lane road. Now put it on the freeway and start running freeway speeds, the mileage is going to drop.

Spouting only for myself, I am very glad that my life is not so structured and measured that I would worry for a half second about 31 mpg verses 34 mpg. When you find yourself out ridin' in the right situations, which I seem to do a lot, twist that throttle and let it go! Get the wind really blowing in your face. Blow the crud out of those after market pipes. Let that machine do what it is made to do, and have some fun with it. Don't let an obsession over a few cents worth of gas jumble your brain into thinking you are accomplishing an amazing feat by getting 3 or 4 more miles to the gallon than someone else.
I am 60 years old, still work 55 to 60 hours a week, or more, and will be working till I am 90 as I have no retirement coming except what I save and invest. I still manage to rack up 15k miles a year on my TG. No way am I going to stress out about that small stuff and will grab all the gusto I can when I can. If something helps keep me feeling, thinking, and acting younger and vital, I do it, and you all should too!..
Let that guy driving his prius, or however you spell that, 10 miles an hour under the speed limit be the one missing out on life over a few of bucks worth of gas. Not us guys, and girls, out on our motorcycles who should be having a blast. A lotta folks don't know what they are missing, and that's a shame.

FWIW I am the guy going over the speed limit with my Prius .... and still getting 43 mpg on the highway :laugh::laugh::laugh:.

I had a prius smoke me on an on-ramp once. But only once. I was surprised and impressed that it was even possible. You are fer sure the exception, and good for you!!!! No one should care about a few cents saved when ridin' a Trike or Bike. Lots more things to worry about in this crazy world than that.!

Just read that Roadsmith released a 3 gallon auxiliary fuel tank for their trike kits. Wonder if it fits the HD Tri-Glide? I would had settled for two but 3 is great. Great piece of mind when riding some of the places we go and not knowing where the next gas is. Just like in the movie Wild Hogs when the moving truck moves and the sign says next gas 201 miles and only having enough gas to go 195.

Hello folks,

I'm new to the site and would like to ask if anyone here has increased the fuel capacity for their trike? I've been looking for auxiliary tanks, but most are bolt or strap onto the seat or tour pack. I reached out to GMan and they are willing to develop a tank, if one of us is willing to provide them with at trike so that GMan can measure and develop the tank. I would, but I'm about 3000 miles away ... please read below.

So if you are still reading this site and looking for a spare gas tank this might be an answer. It is small enough that you maybe could fit up under the body work somewhere. You would have to fab some sort of filler.I found this with only 5secs on a google search.More time might yield more results. An extra 1.5 gallons might just get you out of trouble..........or into more

Yeah, back looking for an auxiliary fuel tank. Confirmed with Road Smith theirs only fits the trike conversions . Those extra 3 gallons would be very nice to have some days.
