Transmission Fluid

I have to add transmission fluid to my TG on a regular basis. Is this normal? My engine oil level is consistantly on the full mark. I see no leaks of any kind. I use the HD recommended transmission fluid. Does any one have any ideas? Thanks

That shouldnt be happening. You must be leaking it somewhere. Wifes Tri has never used trans fluid in the 2 1/2 years shes had it and my Glide never used a drop in 4.

I agree with Glyder, you shouldn't have to add anything to the transmission. The only time I have seen a change in transmission oil level is when I had a shifter shaft seal leak. I run Redline shock proof heavy and change my transmission oil once per year or 20,000 miles which ever comes first, I have yet to have to add any oil during that period.

Ditto Glyder's post. Not sure what weight HD tranny oil is but I just switched (at 19K miles now have 21K) to Ams-Oil 75-140 and totally love the results.

Are you sure there isn't any oil seeping out on the bottom of the bike. A guy I ride with just had his 2010 Limited in for a known leak problem,, something about a brace mounted, I think in the Tranny/motor joining area that needed to be tightened. If you need some additional information PM me and I'll call the guy, but I would check with a dealer. They love warranty work anyway!! For what it's worth?

I removed my primary cover and fluid immediately started leaking out. Now we know where the transmission fluid is going. I am going to live with the problem until winter and let the warranty work fix the problem. Thanks for the help everyone.

Don't let the primary run with too high of a level. If your leaking into the primary your going to have to pull the derby from time to time and suck out some of the excess level.

Chief not to be silly but you do know that the primary on the TRI-Glide has fuild in it normally? About 40 oz worth. Maybe you did not make your statement correct above if you know that. If you let some of it out then you need to drain it and refill to the specs.

When I pulled the primary derby cover off the fluid was so high it was running out of it. I only put 1 qt in it back at the 1000 miles service. There was no doubt in my mind that the fluid came from the transmission.
I drained it again and put 1 qt back in and will watch it until winter.

Thanks.

Your on the right track, oil shouldn't run out after you drain it and only add a qt. Don't be surprised if that tranny seal gets worse as you put on the miles.
