Lots of discussion on this, are most using the Redline to help the noise?
Seems like I also get a noise out of the clutch sometimes which also seems like a "clunk"? (2014 Tri)

My 11 T/G will clunk going from neutral to first, Especially on cold start ups... Nature of the beast. Quite a few of the bikes I've owned did that also, With any ill effects.. I had a Honda 929 and dropping it into First you would think I was hitting the cases with a sledge hammer.. Also without any ill effects..

The vast majority of the 07 and later touring and trikes do this, the automatic primary chain tensioner keeping the chain pretty tight is normally the culprit.

Just to add ; The clunk for me anyway' does serve a purpose, Like when I get on my bike and some nimrod comes over and wants to talk about how he was almost killed on a Harley way back in the 40's , And that's after I just put my helmet on and started the bike, So I just clunk it into gear, The clunk backs him off and I can ride off with out running over his feet.. :)

2014 T/G - I use Bel-Ray 85W-140 in the tranny ..... and Formula + in the Primary. Tranny is pretty quiet! :D

My Dad's makes a pretty significant clunk from neutral to first too. He kicks it into neutral at every stop too so... if it is doing any slow damage, it's going to come along that much faster.. I usually leave it in gear at the lights, but he's not for holding the clutch that long.

My next thing to nudge him towards is the manual primary tensioner and possibly the Barnett plus one with the 480 spring and a clutch wiz...

With the manual tensioner how often do you need to pull the cover and check/adjust?

When I was in the process of replacing his transmission sprocket, the primary chain with everything cold probably had 3/8" to 1/2" slack at the top midway between the two sprockets. Still a heavy clunk from neutral to first. I'd sure like to resolve that issue. Doesn't seem healthy for it. The 07 ultra in comparison is quite smooth, barely clunks at all.

I like the clunk going into first gear, especially when coming to a stop at a traffic light. I know the trany is in first gear. My gear indicator does not show gear position with the clutch pulled in (I guess no ones does).

With the manual tensioner how often do you need to pull the cover and check/adjust? Should not be too often just checked during your routine maint routine.

Once the chain has gotten some miles on it and stretched, I would think about every 15,000 miles.

It is my understanding that the "clunk" into first from neutral is due to the first gear being a "straight cut" gear when all the others are helical cut!! First gear is cut straight (does not mess very well!!) for strength is what I have read/and been told.

Regarding a cold start and engaging the first gear, I always let my bike warm-up until my ET is at least 150 degrees, and in that time I pull-in the clutch and hold it while in neutral for a short period of time and also work it in/out a few times and when I put it in first a significant amount of time I do not experience the "clunking". I think it is lubricating the clutch disc's and gears somewhat, don't know any other reasons for this to work. Works for me anyway!!:pepper:

Two things to note here...

When I switched to the Redline (both primary and tranny) I didn't notice any difference in the clunk.

When I first start the trike when leaving from home, I back it out of the garage and down the drive in neutral with the clutch in. No clunk at all!

Still clunks when I drop into 1st at a light.

It will clunk .. May sure fluids, clutch, primary chain is adjusted properly and will help but never go away . Once the bike warms up things expand and adjustments kinda go out..Try to balance the settings will help..

Clunking

Use Redline Shockproof Tranny Oil and it works great in my 09 Trike. I can actually find neutral a lot easier with it....not sure how it works but it does.....and probably because it's 75/240...ride on.....

Every now and then when all the stars inline and the Moon is in retrograde, I'll snick the tranny into first , And low and behold no Clunk, Just then I get this sinking feeling that I broke something in the tranny
With Harleys noise is good...;);)

The noises in my head never change......:xzqxz: I guess that's a good thing....
