Tranny sprocket change

6TH gear is just about useless in PA unless on Interstate highways. 5th gear is the cats but 6th not so much I gotta use a little chalk and count to make sure before I buy any parts.:Shrug: fred

I bought a new 30T front for our trike but have just about talked myself out of doing the swap.

Well

I think a 31 may be the compromise we need not sure need a little more information from those who have swapped the 32 for 30. I don't want to lose all of overdrive. I guess I'm looking for the best of both worlds. Also we can change tire height as yours I believe are shorter than OEM Harley's tires I am not sure which way to go right yet I'm back to work and found a great Christian organization to work for I am very blessed. Sooo I just may have shiney all over the floor this winter I want to do it myself. ThumbUp If you don't swap pulleys let me know and I may be able to help you out of the un needed hardware  ride safely fred

Yes,our trike's rear tires are 25.1" tall whereas yours are around 25.75" or maybe a little taller. However, our trike is geared even taller than your 09 TG, Fred. Yours has a 32/70 pulley combo while ours has a 32/68. My guess is both of our trikes are geared pretty close to the same, overall. North Texas is flat,wide-open spaces so our present gearing seems to be fine with our 75-80mph speed limits. But, Pennsylvania is pretty hilly so your trike would work better with lower gearing.

Well , OK is not flat where we went. Rolling hills all day, cruise @ 70, 32mpg again. Never have to downshift on hills. I like this 31T. But, to each his own, it works much better than the stock. I hate to hear an engine screaming all day. I was going to go to 30, but SM told me to do the 31& glad I did. This works very well on the 2016.

Doesn't the 2016 come stock with a 30 tooth?

Yes,they do. Going from a 30T front sprocket to a 32T will drop the rpm's approximately 500-600rpm. Going from a 30T to a 31T,with no other changes, will drop the rpm's about 250-300rpm. Not a huge amount but if the OP likes the change, that's all that matters.

sounds right

I sure could use the extra rpm's in sixth falls on it's face below 2500 approx. starting up hill interesting thanks... ThumbUpClint! ride safely fred

I did not try a 32 based on info from SM. He had already done these changes on a couple others . He felt going to 32 would be like earlier Trikes. the ones he had done for other customers were very happy with the 31. HD changed the gearing due to complaints from riders on the earlier trikes & he felt they went too far,(30) therefor the 31. Did 3300 miles on NM trip & I am very happy with the change. The 16,s are supposed to have a hotter cam & more compression.

Your front pulley swap will give other TriGlide owners another gearing option, something in the middle, from what they have right now. I have a new 30T front that I bought from Boardtracker H-D but haven't yet installed. The main reason I haven't is the cost. My dealer wants almost $600 to install it. Another reason is your thread gave me another option to consider.

My only concern with our trike's gearing is pulling our Bushtec trailer or when we travel to the mountains. Guess I need to run the numbers and look at the differences between a 30T and 31T front pulley, more closely.
