So dang hot now-- thought I'd ask a question about cold weather prep :)

Hi All,

I keep my Free Wheeler and Jeep in a 30 x 30 detached garage. It is unsulated on walls, roof and doors-- although certainly not air tight-- its a steel structure garage. I live in East Tennessee and we definitely get 4 seasons. I am not as concerned about spring and fall. In summer, the garage gets mid-90s and I keep a fairly large oscillating fan running to move air around. Winter can get in the low teens with an occasional snow..but is mostly "mild."

I am not planning on mothballing the trike as I hope to continue to ride it when possible (unlike my big riding mower)-- do I need to be concerned or do any winter prep for the trike?

At some point, I might add a mini-split Heat/Cold unit for the garage, but not this year.

I would not worry about it unless you expect not to be riding it for more than a couple of months. I would keep the gas tank full to help with preventing condensation inside the tank. That's about it.

I in eastern NC and in the winter I still occasionally get a day or ten I can ride so i never winterize. It’s always ready to roll. I do have nice winter gear to ride.

Battery tender of course. Don't start it for a few minutes then shut it down. Need to burn off crankcase vapor/moisture,also in exhaust. I ride all winter here in N.C. as long as the roads are clear. My rule of thumb: dont start it unless I'm going to ride it at least 10 miles, which is easy to do here to get to anything.

My TG sits in an open sided shed year-round, I run an extension cord out to it after mowing season is over to plug it up to a tender.
I will generally ride down to 20 degrees to go to work if it is not going to snow or rain in the winter.
I always run straight gas unless I am traveling away from home.
If it looks like I won't be riding for a few days I will top the tank off. If longer than a couple weeks I will also add some Stabil just to be safe.
Other than that, I don't do anything except make sure the coolant is in good shape.

If you’re continuing to ride your Free Wheeler regularly through the winter, there’s really no need for major prep. However, if you end up going a week or more without riding, I’d recommend plugging the battery into a tender to keep it healthy and fully charged.


Otherwise, as long as the bike is sheltered (which it is in your garage), and you're keeping an eye on the battery, you should be good to go. When you do get around to installing a mini-split, that’ll be a great upgrade for both comfort and storage conditions.
