S&S cams & gear drive

I've got a 2012 Triglide with V&H slip on mufflers, SE air cleaner and V&H fuelpak. I'm about to change the cams and I've read many forums about the Woods and SE cams. Have been wondering if anyone likes the S&S 557 with EZ start that has been designed for the triglide. It seems that most of my ridng is between 2000 and 3500 RPM. S&S claims this cam really shines in this area yet I don't seem to see anyone using them.

The next thing I was wondering is it worth changing to a gear drive. I see there maybe too much crank TIR and I'm thinking I may have hydraulic chain tensioners in a 2012 anyway. Maybe I should just stay with the stock stuff I'm not really worried about the extra cost.

I know the Fuelpak has to go and I was considering a Power Vision cause S&S said they have a map for the PV pretty much figured out for these cams on this bike.

Any input would be appreciated...thanks Jake

No need to go gear drive with the hydraulic tensioners, there are a lot of pretty wild builds running the street with them. As you mentioned, run out is unpredictable and can increase as time goes by. I know there are some folks running the 557 and I'm sure they'll chime in. Another can you could consider is the TTS-100, it hits hard down low and carries aways.

I have the 557 Cam and Exhaust and the Same Tuner. It is a good Cam thru the gears but lose alittle on the Top end with 2 up. I would of put the 100 in if it was out at the time I did mine but it wasn't. now, I am checking out different Handlebars for my short arms and height. Have to relieve the bending over making my shoulders hurt (brucidious in my shoulders) or I may have to give up on biking and go back to Hot Rods. (hope not for now). I would like to get 10 more years of riding.:Coffee:

I have a 2013 with a 110 SE Crate Motor. SE Stage 1 cleaner, Stock header de-catted, Rush 4 " with 1.75 baffles, TTS-100 cams, and a TTS tuner. I also changed the front belt pulley to 30 tooth. Have over 20k on the change riding all kinds of roads thru the Foothills and Mountains from Georgia to Maine plus eastern Canada. I really love the setup. Average between 35 to 39 MPG depending on where I am riding.

Thanks for the tip on the TTS 100. Talked to them today and on stock for $378. Did a little research found some impressive dyno sheets. These cams seem to be right up my alley for my driving style. These people were very informative unlike the guy at S&S that blew me off after I asked for a dyno sheet.

I also talked alot with them about Master tune 2 and I'm thinking of going this way sounds better than Power Vision. Anyone using this program on a older laptop with WINXP. She told me it may or may not work properly. Just what I need another computer and more $$$ Got Win7 but its on the desk top.

Is anyone changing there lifters with this cam. My OEM lifters have 8K on them S&S told me they are junk to change them.

Thanks so much for the cam tip...Jake

A lot of people are saying that the stock HD lifter is subpar. When I installed by TTS-100 I changed lifters also. No help on the program. I used a MINI computer with Wins 7 version for mini's not a full blown install. It worked fine.

I have to agree with S&S, the stock lifters are junk, made in Mexico by the cheapest supplier. I'd put either Head-Quarters Black Op's, S&S standard or S&S premium lifters in.

Running just about the same configuration using the S&S 557 easy start chain driven plus V&H Power duals and their TG Delux slip-ons. I'm using SE adjustable pushrods and Feuling lifters. I posted earlier that I'd had a few problems with the mapping V&H send me on the 557 set up, mainly in the mpg area. Got with Chris and his guys at Sturgis this year and got the FuelPac mapping corrected and the mpg back in the 34-36 range at 75mph.

557 is a good setup....great mid range power.

Jake, I think the general consensuses is, if you change cams, change/replace lifters as well. I have found that to be pretty good advice!! Also agree with other posters that the OEM's are junk!!

Always my thoughts on changing cams be it a car, dragster or motorcycle. Change cam(s) change lifters. I've used Feuling for years with no problems.

I've never run Master Tune on XP, I am running it on 64 bit Vista and Win7. You could try sending a PM to Steve Cole, he does drop into TT every once in awhile.
