Riding in the US

My partner and I will be in the the US in June for an Expo and conference in Indianapolis. We are thinking of buying a trike and touring around for a month or so after that and then shipping it back to Australia. Can anyone tell me the registration and insurance requirements for non US citizens to use the vehicle on the road while we are travelling. Are there different requirements for different states?

An International Driving Permit (IDP) translates information contained on your driver's license into 10 languages so that officials in foreign countries are able to interpret your license. An IDP supplements a valid government-issued license--it does not serve as a replacement for a license. If you are stopped by law enforcement, you will most likely be asked to produce both your IDP and your official driver's license. The United States does NOT issue International Driving Permits to foreign visitors, so you will need to obtain this document before traveling to the U.S.
You should contact your nearest US Embassy because most states now require a motorcycle endorsement on you license.

Most, but not all, states will issue a Temp "in Transit" registration for vehicles. These are normally good for 14-45 days depending on the state. You will need liability insurance also. Keep in mind that is the lowest limit and only covers if you are at fault in an accident.

This is not much help, but in Australia you drive on the left side of the road, so you would want to make sure you buy a right hand drive trike.

By the way my last name is Melton, so that is what caught my attention.

You will need motorcycle endorsement with an IDP should cover that. The libility insurance. When I traveled Canada my insurance company issued me a card that stated my insurance was good in Canada. This may be possible in your case also. Talk to your insurance company in Australia. Also with the IDP you will need to make sure you have your Austrlian license with you. My friend from England and when he got stopped they wanted to see both. License plate may be a problem but you should be able to get a temperary tag in most states.

As far as licensing the vehicle...depends on the state where it is purchased.

In the state where I live, California, the license plate stays on the vehicle. In some other states the license plate is removed at sale.

We have purchased several motorcycles in other states and ridden them across the entire country without any license plates....but we did have the Bill of Sale in our pocket.
