Rear rotors

I have a 2016 Tri-glide.It currently has 852 miles on it.

At about 200 miles the right rear rotor started to develop gouges on both sides. All along the surface's of the rotor. The left rotor seems to be fine.

My plan was to monitor this, but I also advised the dealership of the situation.(Appletons of Clarksville). Finally after watching it get worst,I made an appointment to have it looked at.I was told they were within spec and would would not be replaced.

Within spec? BS!! Something is wrong, something is making this happen.Gouges on a brake rotor ain't right.

I'm going over there this morning and talk to the service manager and the Boss.Hopefully I won't get myself into trouble.Wife has told me to be civil about this.

They will have specifications on rotor gouges as to depth and width. If the gouge is within spec they should monitor it and (Possibly) replace when it gets beyond spec. Maybe look at resurfacing the rotor for a quick fix now.

I do hate rotor gouges. They make the pads wear more quickly and can create a sickly squeal.
I don't think it's just HD rotors though. It's getting harder and harder to find quality rotors. A lot of shops don't even try to resurface the crappy metal and just replace the rotors. Many are made in China now and I envision them scraping up the greasy tailings under a milling machine to press into the new brake rotors...

Just left the dealership, talked to Mary(Boss) and Chief (he's the service manager, and didn't know anything about the situation).

He checked it out and said both sides would be replaced to include the pads, and I would be taken care of.He also implied that the tech got a good chewing.

I've bought 3 bikes from them starting with an "81 (still have it). They have always been good people,I would buy another.

Just all a matter of communication I guess.

Good to hear that rotos and pads will be replaced. I would fire the tech that told you "within spec".

I would pay extra for EBC (FA641/4HH (4 pads come in the set)) or Lyndall pads in lieu of the stock H-D pads.

Bob :D

I have the exact same problem! Just noticed it after a long ride last weekend. I talked to the tech and he said to bring in so they could check the specs. This is a 2015 trike. I'm still under warrenty, so this should be covered correct ? wantt o have all my ducks in a row before I go in.

Thanks

Don

update.....things ain't going so well at this point.I went out of town for a week.Left the trike with the dealer.Prior to leaving it,I talked extensively with Chief. He assures me all will be right.I had a 3x5 card that I had been keeping notes on inside the owners manual.

Things I thought were an issue:

1.glued on things coming off

2.exhaust leak front jug

3.trunk door lock not working.

Just to name a few.

I told them I wanted all this addressed. And the 1K service done.Make sure the service is signed off on in the manual. It would be done I was told.

Ed called me the day before I was to return from my trip.

---Mr.Taylor?

---Who wants to know?

---I have your motorcycle....(either this is the dealership,or my bike has been kidnapped!)

We established it was the dealership..he wanted to know if I wanted the 1K service done.I thought we already had made this decision. Yes

So,I go to get my bike...only 1 side has been replaced.Nothing written in the manual, none of the other stuff looked at.

We don't write in the manual I was told, the tech's have too much to do.Said he had never seen the 3x5 card. And if I wanted it looked at,I would have to make another appointment and bring it back in.Thing is, he found humor in my frustration.Pissed me off he did!

I called the Motor Company.I guess mostly to vent.It was filed as a complaint.I got a call from Mary a day or so later.Don't get me wrong I like her, she's good people, known her for a long time.My question to her was,do they run a muck back there? Can they not work on their own?

She told me she would do whatever it took to make it right.

I'm still stewing about this episode.I am going out of town again for a week in July,we'll try again.

I am still amazed that these issues I am reading still exist. Been going on with them since 2009..
I figure by now they would have them resolved.

Grooved rotors
Trunk not Locking or popping open.

Good Luck ThumbUp

+1 on the EBC pads... Much better than the OEM. Just make sure to install the anti-rattle springs (don't ask me how I know that:kpzxvq:)

Unless they started again, Lyndall discontinued manufacture of the rear pads for the '14 and up (you can ask me about that; I tried to get the Lyndall pads, but went with EBC after Lyndall quit making them... still happy with EBCThumbUp).

WOW, may be time for a new dealer. Wife and I bought 3 bikes from Canoga Park Harley. Loved the place. There are 2 dealers closer, but I just liked the place. THEN, Mike the Service Manager decided to retire. Steve the Parts Manager quit selling parts and moved to selling motorcycles. Service got sloppy and everything (parts) was back ordered.

On a ride onto the high desert we stopped at Antelope Valley Harley. They were cooking hot dogs on the back patio. Met the owner, sales manager, service manager etc. We have purchased 5 Harleys from them, and don't plan on going anywhere else.

Interesting ordeal.

I think everybody has trouble with the trunk door. I have adjusted mine 4 or 5 times, and I think I have finally found an acceptable adjustment.

Exhaust leak should be easy for dealer. Be interesting to see if they just tighten the nuts, or take the time to do it right.....a job we all hate...lot of trouble just for a gasket.

Now, I am interested in the "glued on items". Can you tell us what these are? I hope they finally do the right thing with your rotor problem.
