problems getting neutral when hot

Welcome to TT!

When my 2009 was new I had issues finding Neutral but after changing to Bel-Ray transmission oil I found that the issue was no longer. On my 2015 I had no issues at all with that. But still run the Bel-Ray.

Greetings from the US of A.

As k9 stated, it's all in the oil used. Most HD dealers use Redline Shock Proof syn oil. Not HD stuff. Mine is smooth and quiet since the change.

I am having problems getting into neutral when the engine is up to temperature but will get when bike is cold has anyone experienced this

Welcome... And i find the same thing with my 11 Tri-Glide, So i go down to first gear If I'm not already in first.... And ''Lightly'' tap the heal shifter, into neutral....

I also use Bel-Ray 85W-140 hypoid gear oil in my 2014 tranny.
I use a light heel tap from first to get to neutral. 18,000 miles on mine!!

Using real gear oil makes a huge difference.

Welcome.

What trike do you have? If its a Goldwing then yes you sometimes have difficulty getting neutral from cold. It will go up and down the gears but miss neutral.
Usually we let the trike idle for a minute to get it ready to ride then bobs your uncle nae probs......ThumbUp

its a Harley Davidson tri-glide

A well adjusted clutch makes all the difference. And while adjusting it, check for excess fluid in primary. If seal is leaking or oil pump not recirculating the oil back, that could cause trouble finding neutral.

OIL

Red Line Shock Proof Tranny Oil. If it's good enough for NHRA racers then it has to be great for your Trans. I can find neutral very easy now.

On occasion i would find it hard to getting the trans into neutral....What works for me, And this might not work for everyone, But It seems there are many ideas/technique's on how to solve the problem.. Some might work, And then some might not work for others!.... What i do is lightly tap the heal shifter to click it into neutral'
And other than that' thats the only reason i ever use the heal shifter...

Believe it or not too much oil in the primary can make that exact incident happen as well as cause harder shifting, These are wet clutches and if to much oil is in there it doesn't allow proper plate separation when shifting, at least on my old tour glide. I fill the oil level to where its just touching the bottom of the clutch hub the primary chain will carry enough oil around to lube things.

Maybe a stupid answer but I thought about it a lot cause I have the same problem. Careful analysis reveals I'm not always in first when I want to of to neutral. N is very hard to find except from first. Make sure you're in first when you raise it to N. Also, heel shifting makes it easier, at least for me.

2014 - I run an extra 2 ounces in the primary (I use 40 ounces of Formula+) with a shock lift kit. No problems.

Changing to real gear oil (Bel-Ray 85W-140) in the tranny made everything work great!

Just switched

Amsoil was recommended to me, given a offer I could not refuse, try it if you don't like it oil free and they would put in anything I wanted. Neutral is always in the same place hot or cold. By the way I think the tranny oil from Amsoil is the cat's butt no more clunkity clunk, clunk when shifting. just sayin works for me. ride safely fearless
