Need some opinions....2008 Goldwing1800...switching from conventional oil 10-30 to Amzoil Synthetic 10-20 (recommended by a Honda dealer). Just leery of switching the viscosity. Has anyone else done so? Thanks

I went from conventional to 5-40w Rotella T6. Instantly noticed how quite the motor was. Best part, mileage went up 4 mpg. I will never use conventional again. I am sure you will love the Syn Amzoil as well. Heard nothing but good things about it.

Only use Full Synthetic since bike had 3000 miles.... now a trike / use Mobil 1 4T Racing Full Synthetic 10W-40 switched from Rotella T6 / Tranny is quieter I think..... Valvoline 4T Full Synthetic 10W-30 is another choice..... I have used both..... they are JASO Rated for the Goldwing Transmission....:clapping:

As in any oil threads you will get differing opinions.
The only thing that really counts is it being JASO approved.
With the 1800 engine any 10w-30 or 5w-40, 10w-40 is not going to hurt any ones engine.
Clutches are another story.
5w-30 is not heavy enough for the gearbox,10w is.
Rotella being a synthetic their 5w-40 works fine and seems to contradict anything Ive ever read about a 5 weight oil in a bike.
I would never use anything made for todays cars to thin and not JASO approved..
I myself do use Aimsoil 10W40 in the GL1800.
In my 99 Valk 1500 I did use 20w-50 to quiet down the gearbox.
I could get away with it due to being in So Florida (HOT)and riding daily.
Being a 50 weight didn't hurt me there.
I would not however use it in the GL1800.

In the end use anything You want to as long as it JASO approved for the gearboxes sake.:clapping:

The only possible issue you might watch out for with Amsoil 10w30 is a starting issue. In some 1800s and not all using Amsoil 10w30 when you go to start the starter skips and doesnt engage. If it happens a few times its the oil and not the bike. Its just a quirk with 10w30 Amsoil and the 1800.

It's always best to use the recommended weight of oil per your owners manual or dealer. Brand is your choice as long as it is the correct weight. If your preferred brand doesn't come in that weight then maybe it's time to switch brands. JMO

Your Honda dealer recommended the wrong AMSOIL to you. AMSOIL does not make a 10-20 Motorcycle Oil. The recommended AMSOIL for your Honda, as well as Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and others recommending 10W-30 motorcycle oil is: AMSOIL Motorcycle Oil SAE 10W-30, Stock # MCTQT. This is the oil I use in my 2003 Goldwing 1800 with CSC Trike. AMSOIL currently offers 5 different Engine Motorcycle Oils for cruiser type rides. Hope this helps.
