I have a 2000 GL1500A. It is dripping oil in front of the alternator. I'm told that the alternator isn't lined up properly. That it has an o-ring that has to be properly sealed. I would like your opinions, help, guidance on this statement. Also, need a new mechanic, in southern Indiana. It's hard to find one who want to work on GL Trikes. My guy, bless his heart, had found out he has a medical condition, he needs to address.
Thank you!

I'm not sure the alternator not being lined up properly is the issue. Seals harden up over time and if it's the original alternator, it's now 24 years old.

Couple questions, do you know if this is the original alternator?

If it's not original, is it OEM or aftermarket?

How long has it been since you noticed the leak?

Have you or someone else had to remove alternator for any kind of service? It is possible the large O-ring around the face got nicked and isn't sealing properly.

There is an oring that seals the alternator to the engine.I think some years had hollow dowels at at least 1 of the mounting bolts. There is also a shaft seal in the front of the alternator. If it were leaking there oil would be coming more from the inside of the alt. That oring can be a pain.Bought a cheap alt once and that oring was softer than the Honda and I cut it installing the alt. There is no alignment adjustment so as long as the bolts are tightened and those dowel haven't been installed wrong thats not it.
