I got my Vance and Hines Classic Turndowns installed. I bought these off eBay and was disappointed when I saw they where covered in surface rust. I sanded the bodies down and painted them with high temp black paint. I was able to polish the chrome tips. They look pretty good. I can't wait to hear how they sound.

Congrats on making a good ending out of a bad sale. Shame on the seller not advising of the rust.

Well the good thing is that on a Tri Glide you don't see much of the mufflers except the ends. As long as the price was right and they function good should be fine.

The seller described them as "slight discoloration from heat". I pulled them out and my wife saw they were rusty right away. I liked the look after I got them sanded, looked like a satin stainless. I didn't think they would hold up though if I just clearcoated them. Ive tried to post pictures, but they won't upload for some reason. I'm guessing they are too big.

They look great, but no one likes to get screwed! You made a good installation out of potentially bad situation, congratulations!! :pepper:

Ride safe,

They look great, and I bet they sound great also.
I am thinking about putting a set on my trike, but when I looked at the rear mount bolts they look imposable to reach with a regular wrench, and the dealer wants $98 to install them, is their a special wrench you use for the rear mount bolts ?.....any advice :xzqxz:, thanks.

I just use a regular 1/2" OPEN END flat wrench. Trike up on blocks on my back underneath, a little at a time. Maybe 10 minutes per pipe.:D

I find if I use a 12 point box end 1/2" wrench it will give me better chance to catch the proper angle to break the bolt loose & then find another turn easy. I also found one of the ratchet box end wrenches work well, but you might need to work the rubber insulator away from the head of the bolt just to get it on the bolt.:D

Thanks for all the info. on what tools to use.

How do you guys get the back end jacked up ? I went by the inst. in the owners man. and the frt. end comes up 1st.

the owners man. only shows two ways to jack it and the frt. end comes 1st. each way, is their a way to raise just the rear end with a reg. floor jack and a short 2/4 :gah:? or do I need a special jack ?... new to trikes:xzqxz:.

wrenches are cheep. buy an extra one and bend it using a torch and a vise to the angle you need.
I have several I did this to for header bolts on race cars and inboard boat engines.;)

Look good!

So how do they sound?

I've only ran a short ways up the road. Was deeper than stock, but didn't seem a whole lot louder than stock. What I have read is that they are quite loud running down the highway, as they are basically a straight through glass pack. I ran softail duals with fishtails on my Deluxe that were fairly loud so these might not be too bad.
