Let’s talk wheels

So after talking with our friends on the Harley Davidson forum, I’ve found a Harley Freewheeler wheel is 15 inch 4x108 bolt -12 offset.

keeping the fenders on, a wheel of around 17x7 inch can be fitted tyre size depending.

looking at car wheels to save money I’ve found many wheels at the parameters needed except for the offset.

Most car wheels I’ve looked at have a positive offset.

How vital is the correct setup for offset? Is there a + - range that can be permissible.

What is the best way to counteract an incorrect offset if it is possible to do so?

I hope if someone ITK answered these questions, it may help others as well as me understand a little better how offset works.

Thanks.
