How Fast?

Foolish or not, I at times love a spirited ride providing the road conditions and traffic will allow. I'm not a big fan of trying to find top speed, I've been to 100 plenty of times. I've never owned a bike or trike that couldn't blow the 100 mph mark into the weeds, just never felt the need to go that far. For some sick reason my wife loves it when I pick the front end up on my 06 Ultra, she keeps hollering do it again:).

Lately I've enjoyed the cornering ability of my 2012 GL1800, if a corner suggest 45 mph I know I'm good for 60 or 65 with no sweat providing I have a good line of site through th corner.

Good for you M3...Sometimes ya just gotta go for it. Your Wing is made for that and is very capable of doing whatever you ask it to do. Suggested speeds in curves and corners dont mean much to me either. I know what I can and cannot do.

For me a "spirited" ride means cruising through the mountains or a slow ride along the beach. I don't see a need to test it at overly high speeds as I am not traveling fast enough to put myself in a situation where I would need to accelerate to over 100 mph. I'll go the OTHER way with the throttle and slow down LONG before that would ever happen.

h57,
If you dont like the subject matter of the thread started here, start your own rather than hijacking this one. A subject such as "stupid" people who go fast might be popular:)

Ah yes the thrill of speed , maybe back in my sport bike days ! Not on a Triked Wing and not ever as I lost my best friend last week to a dumb ass in Fl.

Bill, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your friend! What an unnecessary tragedy. You and his family will be in my prayers.

Coming home from my daughter's house last summer I was on a nice, level, straightaway and got her up around 85-90 (hard to tell for sure as I was really keeping my eyes on the road!!) Then, as I was slowing down, I got passed by 2 Harleys (a man and a women) Oh well. Made it home safe and sound and had an enjoyable ride to boot!!

2010 Gold Wing 1800 Motor Trike IRS...on Rev-Limiter in 5th gear: Speedo says "142"...GPS says "144".....my Trike is geared higher than a stock Gold Wing...my last one (2008 Gold Wing 1800 2-wheeler) Rev-Limited at 136 on the Speedo, can't remember GPS reading.....ThumbUp

Dang, that 1800 has some legs. Pretty good top end considering its toting around an extra wheel and all the baggage that comes with it.

If you are REALLY feeling the need to see how fast a trike can go. Try doing it on a track someplace. Riding like an idiot in traffic of ANY kind just shows an extreme lack of respect for yourself and any others that might be involved with any accident you might create.

Jeeez HB! How do you know it was in traffic? As suggested earlier, dont read this thread if you dont like it. Start another one. Calling the good people on here idiots is not wise. I think you can rest assured that any of us who push the envelope at our own discretion has the sense to do it where it will not affect anyone else. A lot of places some of us ride, you can run for miles and miles without seeing another human.

I totally agree that speed depends on what you are comfortable with and especially where you are riding. Here in SW Ohio I cruise at 55-60 MPH. I want to enjoy the ride and in this area higher speeds can be dangerous, depending, once again, where you ride. BUT, it you ride I-40 between Flagstaff into NM, I can tell you if you ride 65 MPH you will get run over. Limit is 75 but everyone runs 80-85. A couple of years ago a buddy of mine was finishing up a 2 week trip out West and we decided, for whatever reason, to clean out the pipes a little. We rode from Boise City OK to Clayton NM at 95 MPH the entire distance. Great road, good line of sight and not a blade of grass over 6 inches high. It was just plain fun, but certainly not anything I would attempt in the East. I was on a stretch of highway in Utah in 2009 that had an 85 MPH speed limit. I was not comfortable riding that speed on that road and kept it all 75. I damn near got rear ended several times since some folks were running 90. It actually was a little scary. I think the key is; if you want to go for speed, be very careful about where and when you do it.

Exactly right FRR. Thats what this thread is about,,,what our machines are capable of...not someones personal opinion of smartness. I am very interested in hearing what Wings, TGlides, Victory's and whatever are mechanically able to do.
We do 80 to 90, or more, here on almost every ride we do at some point because we consider it safe to do so. Yep...Things are different out West. And we like it that way!!

A.) I was unaware I wasn't entitled to have an opinion and B.) I don't believe I called ANYONE an idiot. I believe I said "riding like an idiot". Which was not directed at any ONE person.

Sure you are entitled to an opinion. But make your opinion concerning the subject we are talking about. The discussion was top speeds, not percieved idiots. And who were you referencing to about riding like an idiot? Sounds like it was not directed at any one person,,,but at everyone discussing the subject.
You need to relax Brother!!!

I got my 2005 Gold Wing (Motor Trike kit) up to 106 on flat ground in about 90 seconds. Not sure if the top end is impacted by the way the rear end is set up for towing (not my choice--it came that way).

We're you still in 4 th gear? Set up for towing? They do nothing to a GW for towing, except put on a hitch. You just were not turning your wrist far enough.

Recently changed out my front tire with a rear on reversed . no one in Stuttgart would even try to balance it . read about airsoft beads. so after much searching and discussion , I put it all together. after cruising around for about 30 minutes at various speeds , I took it out "riverroad " where there is a 5 mile stretch with very little traffic. went to 105 on GPS and still pulling hard, but curve was coming up fast , so shut her down . was rock solid all the way . won't do it again as I have no need-to-know.

I have "A PLACE" that I do "Speed Runs" if I feel, for whatever reason, They are necessary.....Hwy 64 outside Pelham, Tennessee.....3 mile visibility, one way traffic, 4 lanes with a 12 foot run-off, flat shoulders after the asphalt, and generally accompanied with some "Law Enforcement Buddies" on EARLY SUNDAY MORNINGS before ANY Traffic is out.....I've raced most everything with wheels over the years and full well know the Dangers of Speed first hand.....I sometimes ride faster than a lot of Riders if by myself or with "Certain Friends", but not what I call "STUPIDLY CRAZY FAST".....ThumbUp...and "SPEED" is a really relative term and varies a lot between Riders because of Skill, Experience, Equipment, etc. .....I hope ALL of You use Really Good Judgement in this Thread when checking Your Speeds.....Have a GREAT Ride.....ThumbUp

The record for a trike at Bonneville Is 128.4
That's officially timed, Flying mile,
Check your Speedometers. Just saying

Most trikes are for two up touring , while the big GL 1800 is no slow poke it's also NOT built for top end speed. Many of the smaller CC sport bikes I owned will blow it away but again she is for touring not racing. If you think they are for speed put my wife on the back and see what happens !

The original Gold wing in 97 was built to be a Sportster killer. The people who bought them turned them into the touring bikes they are now. Top speed can be as high as 140 Mph. They are fast?
