How fast is your 1800 trike

Hi,

I have a 2008 model goldwing converted using a CSC unit. The trike was purchased from new in August and has now done just under 4000 miles.

The wife and I love the trike, it is the third trike we have owned, is the best in all areas except, it is the slowest. Previous trikes were a Rocket 3 and a Can Am Spider both capable of around 120mph 2 up.

Not that I ride at 120mph, 70 is fine but the wing seems to get to 90 very quickly and then gradually builds up to 100 and that’s it.

So is this the norm, are all 1800 Goldwing trikes the same? I did not buy the Wing for top speed but for comfort, just interested in your experience

Just wanted to welcome you to TrikeTalk, Mike! I hope you find yourself at home here. Sounds like you might have a lot of good experience to add to all the discussions!

Welcome Mike! You're gonna have fun around here.

I can't help you with your question. I went out and ran up the Harley to see if I could get you a comparison. At just over 100, there was an awful smell, so I shut it down. I've been working for just over a hour and you can hardly notice the brown stain on the seat now.

Have fun and Ride Safe! (but I'm not convinced 120 is either one):D

WELL THESE THINGS HAPPEN, I WAS SEEING HOW FAST MINE WAS. I WAS AT 100 STILL IN 3RD GEAR ON A 9 COUNT AND THE TOOTSIE ROLLS WERE FLYIN.
I DO UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE STRIPE THAT WAS WHEN I REMEMBERED I WAS GOING TO GET A BROWN SEAT.
ALWAYS GO WITH YOUR FIRST THOUGHT HAHA:yes:

Welcome Mikethetrike. Here is the issue. When they build a machine a lot of things are taken into consideration. The 1800 wing is a heavy machine. Put a trike kit on it and it is even more weight. The bike is geared for reasonable acceleration at the speeds that the factory normally expects the user to ride. When you get to the high speed end there is nothing left to make it go. The torque has pretty much gone away as you are reaching the max RPM that the engine is designed to run at. There is nothing there in the engine to overcome the weight and drag that is there at that speed.

Welcome Mike.
Question - gotta ask, who did you find that would ride 2 up with you at that speed? Did they ever ride with you again????

Rocket 3 and Cam Am Spider. Sounds like you made the wrong choice in going to a Wing trike. Have you thought about a Hayabusa trike and a large insurance policy. I'll bet it would be fast enough.

It was my good wife. On the Rocket which was very stable, we were having some fun with a friend in a BMW and just did not realise how fast we were going. On the Can Am however it was a bit scary as we were travelling down hill on a motorway, this time the wife let me know in no uncertain terms that it should not happen again.... and it hasn’t. Sold the Can Am shortly after and bought the wing.

Mike you have a very smart wife. There is a place for that kind of speed. The highway is not one of them. Just my opinion from seeing the results.
