I got the brake recall done yesterday. It was pretty painless and took about 4 hours. The service writer didn't elaborate but said they replaced the parts, and I know they did actually work on it because I had replaced one of the front fender bolts with a black Allen Head bolt and now it has all factory type bolts on the fender. I had not had any trouble with the brakes but now they seem to be even a little better than before. I guess Honda knows it has been converted now but the warranty ran out a long time ago anyway.

Hey Woolie !!!

Just curious - which dealer did you take your trike to for the recall?

Our Midland Honda shop owner told us early on that he won't be doing anymore trikes for the brake recall as it cost them a pretty penny to fix a particular trike after the mechanic messed it up doing the brake recall. Something about the brake calipers were seized and the mechanic broke them off... this is probably not the whole story as I could not hear/understand the whole conversation - but that was the jist of it.

At any rate, a local friend decided to take his Gold Wing trike to the Abilene dealer for the brake recall. They told him they could do it in one day on a Friday but since he couldn't be off work on Friday he took it over on Saturday and left it. The next Friday they told him not to come as it wasn't ready yet. The next week they called him and said it needed a new front tire. The owner told him to put one on - same thing that was on it (I don't know what tire brand that was). A week later they called him and said they didn't have one in stock and would have to order it.

A week later they called him and said it was ready. He and Jim are going to Abilene today to pick it up on a trailer as the weather is supposed to be so bad. I know that he won't test-drive it before they load it and come home. Just keeping fingers crossed that all is well with it - but after all these delays we are wondering if something else wasn't going on - like our Midland dealer had happen and they wouldn't tell the owner til they fixed it.

With all these war stories going on about trikes and the brake recall we are nervous about having it done right away - waiting for the dealers to have plenty of practice on them before we take ours in.

But since Lubbock is close we are curious which dealer you took yours to.

Thanks... Carla and Jim in Midland

I had the recall done at Family Power Sports. I was thinking the store in Midland and Lubbock were owned by the same people but I really don't know. That is where I bought the trike and they have always been pretty good about working on it. They just charge an arm and a leg, their labor rate is kinda high (IMO) but got to pay all the help. I had to call for an appointment and wait a couple weeks but other than that everything was as expected. Mine is a MotorTrike.

I had mine done about a week ago at a local dealer called Otto Brothers. I basically had to get in line because he had a line up of 1800s inside his shop all waiting for the recall. On my trike I can say this is the best brake pedal along with rear brakes Ive ever had. The first year I owned it I went back and forth between Honda and Lehman and my trike went through 3 different dealers trying to get the rear brake issue fixed. I really got tired of the dealer and the factory doing the dance of he said she said and neither admitting there was an issue. The third dealer was the charm and whatever he came up with fixed it until a couple of years ago when Honda did there test and the rear brake issue reared its head again. All I can say is if the dealer dont back you no matter whats wrong with your trike youll have an uphill battle on the issue.

I took mine to U Motors in Fargo, ND in early March and they did a great job. The brakes are much stronger than before. They did say Honda allows a bit more time for them to do the update on a trike but if it took longer than what Honda allowed I would get a minor charge for the extra. They had it all done with 2.4 hours labor and no charges to me.

I don't know how much time Honda allowed on mine, the service writer said it would take about 3 & 1/2 hours. There was no mention of extra charges and it didn't cost me anything. I guess it helps to have a pretty face, lol!

Thanks Woolie...

Family Powersports in Lubbock was the original dealer on Jim's trike also....Lehman Monarch II kit. They triked it when it was new - 2009. We are 2nd owner. Bought it from the first owner (who lived in Lubbock) when the odometer only had 2715 miles. Since we already have two official Honda dealers in the area Honda would not allow Family Powersports to also be a Honda dealer here.

Yes - they are ALL owned by the same people. They have several stores.

Later on, when there aren't so many being scheduled in for the recall, we might go to Lubbock seeing as Midland won't do the trike brake recall anymore and Golden Honda in Odessa...well, we'll just say we've dealt with them before and won't again.

Hope you have a good riding season!

Honda Brake Recall

I am new owner of Gs1800 CSC conversion. Bike is 2001. What is the brake recall??

Here are a couple links from the Honda Forum about the Brake Recall. You will probably learn more with these than I can tell you. You should call your local Honda dealer and visit with the service dept, you shouldn't need any paperwork, they can enter the VIN number and tell whether the recall work has been done. They may even want to look at it and make sure it was done. From what I read if the recall is completed there will be a punch mark on the rear master cylinder and the secondary master cylinder on the front wheel.

Took my Roadsmith in for the Brake recall two weeks ago. Called my dealer and made a appointment and got in in one week. Took it in at 9am and road in home at 10:30am the same day. After the recall the brakes are better then before. I could not be any happier with the job they did. If you are anywhere near Sycamore Illinois I can pass the dealers name on to you. They are a small Honda dealer but have a excellent Goldwing mechanic. :)

Took my Roadsmith trike in about 3 weeks ago. Had them flush the front while they had it there. Left it on a Thursday morning and picked it up at noon the next day.<br />
It, too, has the best rear brake pedal it's ever had. Kinda surprised me how good it really is.

First I try to never and I mean never take my trike in to a Honda Shop. Many bad experiences over many years.

Made a appointment for the recall, was told it would take 48 hours. After a week I was able to pick it up. First thing they said to me when I arrived was we are sorry; our mechanic broke two of your Baker Wings getting off the bike. Don't worry we will replace them at no cost. I almost loss it, how in the world can you break those getting off a trike.

Second thing, I getting on my bike, start it up; heading out the driveway hit my rear brakes to let traffic go by and the petal goes to the floor boards. NO REAR BRAKES. Luckily the on coming cage decided to stop instead of broad siding me.

I drove it back to the service are looking for blood. They wouldn't let speak to mechanic.

End of the story the owner came out and talked to me about the situation. All I hear is promises of how it will be fixed. I told him I don't want lip service. Your mechanic busted the wings off my trike and tries and kill me by not bleeding the brakes correctly. Just fix it!

Sooooo It wasn't the recall pe sa, it was the grimy dealership

If the SMC has been disabled they, ( the dealer) will need to do nothing except verify to Honda that they checked it. Apparently some kits disable the SMC but some do not. My tech has done several, and he said it takes 2 1/2 hrs max.

I seriously question whether an authorized Honda dealer can refuse to do warranty work on a SMC since the company requires that they perform the service. I'd call Honda and let them know the problem.

Honda told my dealer to just verify that my Roadsmith's smc had been disabled. The dealer was doing exactly what Honda told them to do.

I am trying to remain optimistic about my up coming appointment with Honda to have my recall completed. I have had poor results from dealers over the years and have low expectations for this one. Seems like they make you more promises than two teenage in the back seat of a chevy on prom night and usually with the same results. I'll report back my experience and outcome.

Good Luck. I am still waiting on mine to come out of the shop a second time.

I took my CSC Viper to Castle Powersports on Gallatin road in Nashville. I have know Robert in service since 1997. They actually do CSC conversions and they always take good care of me. I did take it on a Thursday after work and picked it up on Saturday. It does take some extra time on a Trike about 4 hours or so. They take care of my Gl1800 and my Triumph Bonneville that I did not purchase there. They did offer me good deals on both but did not have what I wanted in stock so I purchased both elsewhere. I actually paid more for my Triumph because I didn't want to wait until they received one. There are some good dealers out there!
