Frame failure on gl 1800 motortrike

GostRider,
How many miles on 2 wheels before you triked it, and how many after?
I wonder how many frames are failing??? If only all trikers belong to this I bet the numbers would jump up.....Honda needs to cover all the bad frames 2 or 3 wheels.

About 25k as a bike and 12k as a trike. If this was a trike induced issue, you wouldn't see significant failures on bikes. The fact is, this is a tube break occurring after a period of time which strongly suggest stress failure. If that's the case, it's clearly Honda's problem.

You do know the Honda frame is 7003-T4?

Yes, I knew this. Finding some 1/4" 7003 locally proved to be impossible. I'm reluctantly following the recommendations of some folks who are supposed to know what they're doing. Time will tell if this was a good strategy I guess....

Thanks for the input.

Since I am well aware of the Gold Wing 2-wheeler Frame Breakages Recalls (Watched my Dealer strip and Replace 4), and after reading the many Posts in this Thread, I jacked up my 2010 Gold Wing 1800 Motor Trike IRS and took a really close look at mounting points, new stress areas (using seat of pants visual engineering) as a Trike...........

There may actually a much smaller chance of the Frame giving trouble as a Trike in the Area Honda had issues with, due to where my Framework mounts, than there would be as a 2-wheeler. With no Single Sided Swingarm, Center Shock Arrangement, etc., there is very little Load now at the Area of Most Breakages. Most of the Load is carried on the much Larger upper parts of the Frame in it's New 3-wheel Version.......Time will tell as we All add more Miles and Years to Our Rides.....ThumbUp

This is what I was saying earlier. I think the chances of cracking are much less with the IRS as well. This is by no means a new issue. If there was a way of figuring the percentages I would say that there is a much greater percentage of breakages on two wheelers than trikes.

Yep, I totally agree with You.....the IRS-Type pretty much uses it's own Seperate Frame Assembly for most all of the Rear Load Bearing of the Suspension Loads forced on it.....ThumbUp
