clutch recall

Here is the recall according to my VIN, HMMM a new piston I am wondering if this may be a dual fix, the clutch actuation and the oil migration problem Last updated Oct 23, 2018

The hydraulic clutch system with secondary clutch actuator part numbers 37200131and 37200131A on the subject motorcycles may exhibit an internal leak of fluid past the secondary clutch actuator piston/seal. If this leak continues for an extended period, the clutch master cylinder reservoir could lose enough fluid toexpose the hydraulic clutch circuit to air, which may result in the inability togenerate enough lift to disengage the clutch.

Model

2017 Freewheeler

Safety risk

If this condition remains undetected, it could lead to a loss of control of the vehicle when started in gear, first shifted into gear, or coming to a stop.

Remedy

Owners of affected motorcycles will be asked to arrange service with an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer, who will confirm that the motorcycle is covered by this recall. If covered, the dealer will install a new secondary actuator piston assembly from the recall kit, P/N 91500093. This service will beprovided at no charge to the customer.

We strongly urge you to take your motorcycle to your dealer to have the appropriate service performed as soon as possible. Should you choose to ride your motorcycle prior to this service, we urge you to be aware of this condition. Some product campaigns may have expired and you may have to pay for the service. Please see your local Harley-Davidson dealer for further details

Clutch recall

Thanks for the heads up on the clutch recall. I just got off the phone with the service dept. where I purchased my 2018 Trike, the service man ask for my vin. number and stated there is a recall on my Trike, and to call back the first of November that he should have more info. by then. Bill

Well Jack, you finally got your recall & now we both have a problem with our FW's:gah:

:p Did you check yours?

I do not have a problem mine works fine If Harley wants to fix it they can I wont argue

I still think there is more to it than just another hydraulic fix HMMMMMMM

I agree, I have not checked my VIN yet. I know I don't have migration. If I'm on the list, I will get it done.

I wonder where the brake fluid is actually going?

1 leaking out the piston seal

2 Some think it is boiling off from heat

3 Fluid is by passing in the master cylinder( cause and affect), clutch does not dis engage, hard to shift, hard finding neutral Bike lurches forward with clutch pulled in

I'm gonna pull my master cylinder cover tomorrow & check the level.

It states in the service manual that as the clutch wears, the master cylinder fluid level will rise.

Cover your gas tank so you don't dribble fluid on it

That will ruin your nice black paint

Look at the bottom of your master cylinder do you see any black muddy crap in there?

I have flushed my fluid twice already, wiped the master out clean. Clutch pivot clevis taken out of handle and cleaned and lube To date I have had NO problems including no problems starting in gear;)

I just went on the NHTSB website & put in 2017 Freewheeler & no recall come up.

I guess I need to contact my dealer.

I just checked with my vin number and shows no recall, not sure if that is good or bad, time will tell if I get on the list or not, maybe dealer will contact me

All for now Trampas

My '17 FW is in the recall group, a call to the dealer, they said they will be getting the fix kits in early November and don't even have any instructions on how to perform the fix yet.

Same as the others...."call in early November.....it's safe to ride if you wish to"

Jack, would you think that in replacing this part, they would have to bleed the clutch line, to get all the air out?

That is my thought & I am going to now hold off on replacing/flushing the clutch brake fluid.

I'm checking it in a little while, as I want to get a ride in.

Thanks

Secondary Clutch Actuator sounds like a fancy name for slave cylinder, and definitely will require bleeding. They will replace the fluid with new I would think.

I checked my brake fluid level prior to my ride today & it was in limits & did not look bad at all, though it was definitely darker that new DOT 4. I turned my pleasure ride/lunch into a ride to my dealer.

I do have some updated info from my chosen dealer, Doc's HD in STL.

As others stated, they said the initial recall replacement parts will start arriving at dealerships 11/5/2018.

They were told they would receive recall repair kits weekly until all are fixed. I am scheduled to get the fix on Wednesday, November 14 in the morning. I told them the only thing that would hamper this if there is ice/freezing rain or snow.

They will flush the system while in there & I am glad, as I don't have to mess with it & getting that cover off. I will do the front & rear brakes later this year & will then be on a schedule to flush all brake fluid lines every even year.

As far as my ride today ( 50 miles), my Freewheeler is still running like a dream & improving with every ride, If that's possible.:clapping: I am impressed with the M8, as far as torque & smoothness, after the minor adjustments I made, which were a K&N replacement air filter in the stock box & an external breather system of my own design.

My 17 is on the list, this will make the 8th issue I have had with this bike.I was thinking of buying a new one in 2020 but HD is going to have to get their act together before I buy another new one.The service guy i spoke to today said he had a question for the HD rep.If the brake fluid is leaking into the trans and the trans is migrating into the primary what is brake fluid doing to the clutches?
