2010 tri glide 103 ticking noise sounding like a lifter

well a couple of years ago I mentioned about how I had a lifter noise off and on and had taken it to the shop and they couldn't get it to do it, well its gotten a little worse where you can here it more often now , took it in and they said the valve seal was bad and valve was floating and the warranty people want them to go deeper in it like checking the cams and rods , the trike runs great except for that annoying ticking sound I would hear on start up and when cruising and let off the throttle , has anyone experienced this problem and did it get fixed ,wondering when its fixed if I'm going to end up with this problem again after all the warranty out sounds like it might be a very expensive fix

Valve float... That is laughable. How do they know the valve seat is leaking? Did they take off the exhaust?

I would be looking at another dealer since your in warranty

Hopefully that was a tongue in cheek response. Most noises seem to either get worse to the point where they can be diagnosed or they go away on their own. Either situation is good. Nothing worse for owners and service departments than intermittent issues that aren't there when it is time for a diagnosis.

Every engine will make some valve train noise as they get miles on them. Some more, some less. If your paying attention and hear more noise than normal, well it is possible there is a underlying issue happening.

Keep in mind that even with a new set of lifters there could still be some noise. The valve train takes a beating both in the physical sense as well as the heat cycles it endures. The oil pump can lose some pressure over time and not supply the same pressure as before to the lifters. Which in turn they do not pump up as much with the possibility of making some valve train noise.

Other noises can be related to vibration at certain rpms. There is a myriad of places to look for noises you hear as you ride or the engine is at idle

How many miles on it? I just passed the 80k mark on my '10 and no valve noise, but gaskets were replaced not long ago and I paid for new rings.

My 10 has done it since first service my dealer says it is normal and said get louder pipes

Almost the same with my 11, Then one day I changed out the pipes for cat less true duels and slip-ons, 30 thousand miles since then and haven't heard a peep outa them..;)

But if my dealer said it wasn't normal and the Trike was in warranty, I would let them do what they have to do..

I hear ya there Fuzzy!!! I tend to get used to hearing a fine tuned engine or vehicle. If the sound changes I immediately start searching for the reason. Of course sometimes its just due to the nature of the beast but it still drives me nuts trying to find out why it changed sounds.

I have 17000 miles on my '14 TG, and it seems I hear lifter noise, at times very faint, sometimes louder, but the dealer says it is normal, get used to it. I still have 3 years left in my warranty, and plan on piling on the miles and trusting it to get me through.

Of course, I am looking for a different dealer to get a second opinion...

:Agree:

Oh come on cant they find a better one than valve float?

What oil do you use?

I've been running Amsoil 20w50 in both my 06 Ultra and my dads 09 Triglide. His top end is pretty darn quiet. Now my 06 Ultra ticks a little more due to the higher lift cams and the roller rockers.

I do have true duels and load pipes replaced the cat exhaust still sounds like a lifter but might as well let them check everything well let you know the out come

ticking noise that sounds like lifter

well my tri glide has been in the shop for 4 weeks now said they had to order parts new head flywheel who knows what all. I have this vision of a mechanic standing there with wrench in hand scratching he's head and parts laying everywhere looking for this ticking noise

Sounds like you were having catastrophic engine failure. Flywheel shift is a known issue. Once that has gotten to a point it will do some serious damage

:Agree: IMO, if it isn't under warranty, the last thing I would put back in there is a Harley Davidson flywheel. I'd go S&S all day long, they build a much better replacement crank.

:Agree: S&S do build great replacement flywheels. When I built by 96" to a 103" stage III, we checked the run-out and the OEM was only 1/2 a thousands out!! My Tech friend that did the build stated that that was the best he had ever found in an OEM assembly. It is my understanding that aggressive downshifts with excessive rpm's is the major cause of the shifting issues.

Ft. Mohave, Az. huh? We are neighbors, we have a house in Bullhead City. Are you using Kingman Mother Road Harley??? We have always had good luck with them when we needed something when in Arizona.

One of the really hard things to do with a Harley is ignore all the engine noise, rattles and vibrations. Harleys all vibrate, rattle, and have lifter noise. Had over 90,000 miles on my Ultra when I traded it for the Tri, the '09 Tri had 55,000 miles when traded for the Freewheeler. ALL had lifter noise of some sort. My dealer said (tongue in cheek) when the ticking turns into clanging and banging you MAY have a problem. Keep posting, I'm curious what they find.

Good Luck

The Harley wheels are a roll of the dice, my dads 09's runout is still at .001 after 50,000 miles. The 2010 I had was .005 with 7,000 miles on it. One of the reasons a person would be crazy to put gear drive on one of these newer sets of wheels without having someone like Darkhorse Crank Works beef them up 1st, the RO is all over the place, and you never know when its going to shift.

yea I remember you from past post, I well let you know, hopefully I get it back this week although its getting to hot to ride, yes its at mother road, always did good by me also, but still just wondering, from what I've read about victory engines to bad they don't use there design looks and sounds like a very well built engine

use the screaming eagle full synthetic in everything always have even in my 05 ultra

Syn3 will work, I used to run it in the engine when I could get it 20% off. Since I can't get a deal on it I use other oil which I get a decent price on. I've never been a fan of Syn3 in the transmission or primary. The times I ran Syn3 in the transmission, I would always have metal fuzz on the drain plug magnet. I switched to Redline Shockproof heavy and the metal fuzzies went away to never return. In the primary I run Formula+, Harley has a weak compensator design, it doesn't get proper lubrication. The Formula+ has shown to help the compensator live a little longer.
