Anyone have real life experience with a taller gear for better speed on a TG with a 114” motor. I just feel like on a 70mph highway it’s running too high a RPM at like 77 mph.

I have no experience with this, but how about considering slightly taller rear tires. Assuming you have 15” wheels maybe a 215-65r15 or a 205-70r15 would work. I can’t imagine there would be a clearance issue, especially with a lift kit.

I had thought about that.

Don't get carried away. A taller gear may make you use less RPMs at a given speed but you pay for it in less bottom end pickup. You got to look for a happy medium for the way you normally ride.

Baker 7 speed? I’d like one but the $$$ is a little steep for me.
Both the stock 6 speed and the Baker 7 speed have final drive ratios of 1:1 so no gain on lowering the rpms when in top gear. The Baker does offer lower gearing starting out for more grunt but the final is same as stock.

Thanks for clarifying this. I had not looked at the ratios. Didn’t research after seeing the price.

The only thing i can think of is putting an 32 tooth trans pulley on it. Sometimes i don"t even use first gear when taking off if i am by myself on the trike. First gear is like granny low in a truck.

That will definitely work. Prolly have to change drive belt also. $$$$

Interesting, I have found that in 6th gear, my rpm are in great shape.

In fact, if cruising just under 60 or so, I am still in 5th. Don't really move to 6 unless I am about 65 +.

One of my riding buddies who lives in Kentucky and winters down here had a Baker grudge box put in his 2018 Harley Trike a few months ago. He said he is turning slightly lower rpms in 6th gear. 1 through 5 seem closer together, but 6th is a true "overdrive" gear, or at least that is what he has said.

Stand in front of your rig about 15 feet. Look at the unit. With all the drag that's put on by the body, fenders, windshield and all other items that catch the breeze coming at it, just think about how hard the motor has to work, especially 2 up to keep pulling. You bring the rpm down too much and you'll constantly be downshifting. There goes your MPG.
Mother Company takes this all into account when designing and building these heavy machines.
Just my 2 cents worth. I've had my 13 over many state lines and never thought it was running too many rpms.

I agree with what Dewey said above. The only exception is that if you have your motor rebuilt and significantly increase the hp and torque then a little less rpms in your final gear would probably be useful and not cause you to downshift even when heavily loaded.

Of course, Baker transmissions are not cheap so I don't think I would change over just for that reason. Now if you had done a little speed shifting and blown you Harley OEM transmission, which is almost guaranteed, then installing a Baker is probably in your future anyway.
