Has anyone tried wrapping the pipes? This forum is not making me excited about my new Tri-Glide. Anyone have any good news?

you can wrap the pipes or not and install the nightrider.com" XIEDS" if you want to spend as little as possible to cut down on the heat. The XEIDS are simple plug and play install and can be removed without the dealer even knowing you had them on the bike.
Before doing anything ride the bike if it gets hot try Nightriders cheap fix with the Xieds it fools the computer..

Ride the bike awhile as each area has a better or worse type of gas in there areas. as for us midwest riders we are going to run hotter with all that ethenal they put in the gas and whos know what else..

Yea all vehicles have some kind of issues but I tell ya the TRi GLide is one nice bike if you like to cruise the open rodes..

I feel the way you do Spywire. My wife has a 2012 Triglide. The darn thing cost so much I hate to spend more money than needed. I'm also hesitant because I hear the low gas mileage people are getting with trikes after doing all the upgrades.

Her Triglide is stock except the Jackpot slipon's, Arlen Ness A/F, FL-Xied's and Captain Itch Crotch Cooler I took off her 2010 FLHXXX (Street Glide Trike). She has over 7K on her 2012 and so far she hasn't mentioned excessive heat. We are in Florida on Vacation. Riding these flat roads, she's getting 42 MPG. I also took the lower's off because she don't like the look. She is happy with the stock power of the Triglide.

What do you expect? I will bet Wizard, that if you took all of the cosmetic stuff off of it you wouldn't have any heat issues at all, my other HD's don't but they are basically Bare Bones......If you wanted a water-cooled engine may-be you should have gotten somthing other than a Harley....I wonder what some of you do when your barbeque grills get to hot....moving on.

Re my post #14. When I first started reading this site and the other trike site I would have been sure that I just spent $33,000 for a rolling piece of s**t. Ulless I put on a 30 tooth sprocket, tuner, catless head pipe, 6 row oil cooler, fan, cams, and God knows what else my bike would: melt, fall apart, set my leg on fire, could never use 6th gear, couldn't beat a wheel chair in a drag race, had no power, and gas mileage sucked.

If you are mechanically inclined, and love to tinker GO FOR IT. I did that for years on my Softails and Dynas. If you are paying for all the work to get done, just how much is that extra 3 or 4 HP worth?? You can spend 4 or 5 hundred bucks for that 30 tooth sprocket and installation, or you can down shift. Oh, when you change the sprocket, your speedo becomes inaccurate, and your gas mileage goes down (a little) so you can spend a couple hundred more for a tuner that re calibrates your speedo, and MAY get your mileage back up. If you change your head pipe, keep them so if your state starts inspecting motorcycles you can put it back on. Your car has a catalytic converter, have you taken it off the car yet??? I haven't

My Norton was for drag racing, the Ducati raced through canyons and curves. The trikes take us on long rides. Now that I'm old, the carving the canyons and 'wheelies' are a thing of the past. If your trike is burning your leg, SOMETHING IS WRONG!!! If you are constantly running 300*+ oil temps, SOMETHING IS WRONG.

Actually I know a gentleman who owns a 2010 Ultra Classic, he received a nice burn on his right calf while on a trip due to the heat coming off the catalytic converter. Lots more air flow across a 2 wheeler than a trike, guess he shouldn't have been burned then. I know when I took the 1st trip on my Triglide I would have gotten burned if I wouldn't have had the highway pegs to put my feet up on to get away from the cat.

Felt heat opinions are almost like oil threads, everyone has and opinion and some experience. I can say without a doubt my 2010 Triglide is the hottest running in both felt heat and oil temp of all my presently owned or past HD baggers. My 06 Ultra with 95" build which made 104 hp 100ft/lb torque will only get to 230 degrees without an oil cooler, a stock Triglide could never hope to do that without a oil cooler. My dads 09 was regularly running 300 degree oil temps before we made some mods to cool things down.

Amen.....I think I will concentrate on enjoying my new trike, makes me want to take a Xanax after reading some of these posts. The last thing I need right now is another project.... My 09 Challenger just ran 142 mph stock with a catalytic converter, 6-speed Viper trans, no nitrous, no blowers, but it is water cooled...I did not buy this trike for speed, did get it up to 109 mph with my wife, lost to a CanAm Spyder who got to 121 mph, but I was happy with it.....I have to agree Screwball if your ride has a problem fix it, if you want to tinker with Pandoras' Box and change everything, do it. I have and extended warranty and, just like our cars, will take it back to the dealer if I have any problem. Why treat this any different ? Cost as much as a new car.

We have a 2011 Tri Glide and it does get a little hot. I had a '04 Ultra and a '06 Ultra and they got a little hot especially at low speed. The one thing that bothered me was the pinging I know from the old days that will burn pistons and mess up valves. We have 7000 miles on the trike now and love it . Would I like it cooler yea would I like more power yea. I'm not going to remove cat or anything else that will void waranty. I did put a PCV on with a program from Jammie and it stopped the pinging and come spring I am going to remove the covers and wrap the pipes and put the covers back on. The trike does us fine but we are old and don't want to ride 90mph any more I am fine with 70mph on Interstate. I have had 2 1800 Gold Wing trikes with a Champion kit on them. They were a lot cooler at low speed and a good ride very dependable but I like the looks and sound of the Harley. The Gold Wings were very hot at highway speeds were the air came out the radiator grills if you tried to put your feet on the highway pegs it would burn you up, experience talking. So the thing is to each his own make your self happy , A Harley is hot they are air cooled they have always been hot.

I'm kinda like Screwball. I like to keep my bikes as stock as posible. I'm also 67 and have a somewhat tolerance for heat. Only a few times I've had to get off my bike because of the heat. Unlike Screwball, I can't remove my lowers because my speakers are in them. I have never seen much difference from the old solid lowers and the new ones with the door, yes a little difference - not much so taking the doors off isn't an option.
I do have, and have not seen them mentioned here, floorboard extenders that move the floorboards away from the engine another 1". To me they make a BIG difference.

Screwball, how much did the pipes, A/C and remap set you back? Did you install the pipes and A/C yourself? How much for the remap?

I guess I'll just have to wait until summer to see what I "might" have to do. Hopefully the crotch cooler and the extenders will be enough.

The Rush slip-ons and the stage 1 air cleaner for the '09 were about $400. I ordered them when we ordered the bike. The dealer installed them freebie, and did the download. All was done before I took delivery. The '11 was about a hundred more for the Reinhardts. Again, the dealer did the wrench work and download for zip. We have been customers (5 Harleys) and all service work for years. We are kind of lucky, there are 5 dealers within 50 miles of home. I guess the competition keeps them honest.

I hope no one is taking this the wrong way. For years I had a bike stand and did most of the work myself. I usually had the fastest bike in the crowd, when it wasn't broken because I went a bit too radical. I can think of many times I had to trailer my '92 Springer home when it over heated and melted the ignition. I even put points in because I was tired of getting stuck. I just hate to see someone void a perfectly good warranty. There was a guy on this board ( I think it was this one) that had heating problems. The 3rd or 4th time he took it in and bitched they found a malfunctioning compression release (or something) causing the rear cylinder to run lean. Harley bought him a new engine. Had he started changing cams, head pipes, etc HE would have bought that engine. The thing was, he had bitched enough about it, had a paper trail of the problem, and hadn't modified this scoot enough for them to void the extended warranty.

I agree with the floorboard extender's. They are usually one of the first mods I do. Easy enough to buy everything you need at the Hardware store and extend them yourself and save a few bucks.

Just thought I'd add my little story.

the reason I have so much trouble with the heat is because my right leg is stiff, and therefore is very close to the header pipes and the heat coming up from the exhaust. My trike was 24 hours old to me when I shipped it to the states for our 3 1/2 month riding tour.
The heat was so bad, that the back of my thigh was burnt several times. I rode with my bad leg hanging out at times trying to get away from the heat. Cried a lot too! Kept going to Harley dealer's along the journey, and I have to say they were all wonderful, but nothing resolved.
We were riding with friends on our way to Georgia, and to also ride the Dragon, when things finally came to a head. Coming down a hill on the highway the sound of the trike got real loud, then the neutral light came on -- and I was in gear!! Yelled over the CB to my husband that something was wrong and I had to stop. Only place was the small area marked where the highway split. We all pulled up and the heat was so bad I had to move back into the passenger seat to get my leg away from it .... just as my friend yelled that the bike was on fire!!!!! They grabbed their bottles of water and put it out. My husband then saw oil all under the trike. He took the chrome cover off the header pipe to find that they had split from the heat about 6-7 inches.
Arranged a tow truck, and trike was taken to Chattanooga H-D These people were amazing. Their technician was finally able to tell me the problem. A wire was broken, and this prevented the flap from opening on the cat converter -- so all the heat was going back into the engine. Bad enough to near blow the thing up with me on it. This was from initial build of the bike before it was shipped to me!!!!! The heat also melted my clutch cable, this is why the light came on, and it was that oil that caught fire.
Gotta tell ya it was scarey there for a while.

I don't think anybody on this Board has said they don't run hot. Her's catching on fire was from a malfunction from the build she had. I think it also depends on your riding. Where you ride and how much weight you carry. I've seen Trikes that are obviously overloaded and pulling Trailer's. I can tell you one thing for sure. If I felt like some on this board, I would not own a Harley or any other make. They all run hot. After all, you are sitting on top of a Motor with little between you.

My choice was to live with it, get rid of the Trike, or spend more to fix it. The road pegs and ECM update helped, but it was still running too hot for my liking. Now, $9,000 of engine upgrades and other blings have the bike where I wanted it to be. And that $ is nothing compared to what I see other guys sink into their rides. If you are happy with it stock, that is good. I promise you if you had ridden mine before I spent the dough, you would have been amazed at the amount of heat it generated. My buddy has a 2012 Wide Glide with a 103, new pipes, screaming eagle breather and tuner. Sunday we did a standing start drag race on a remote road. I smoked him terribly and at twice the weight. He couldnt believe it. Now it is a sweet runnin' bike and there are zero heat problems. To me,,,worth every dime. We all have to make the best choice for your situation.

Catalytic converter, 3" from the heel of our right boot, lights off at 600-700 degrees and runs at 900-1000 degrees. Just sayin' :Shrug:

You must have put a 120R and positive traction, or your buddy didn't know how to ride the 103 wide glide???

Just a question. Why is the Tri Glide so much hotter then an Ultra? The saddlebags stick out almost as far.
Someone described it as the wind being blocked by the rear wheels, but wouldn't the saddlebags block the wind also?

Could it be because the bags are smaller in frontal area?

Just took the trike for a run to Daytona with our club, ran it hard on the highways and as usual ran right into heavy traffic in Daytona. The engine did get hot in traffic, the rear cylinder shut down, and I got my legs out of the floorboards and onto the pegs, as I would with any of my other Harleys. I did not notice anything unusual about this. Granted it is not 98* out yet but to me it is tolerable. Now if you keep your right leg next to the oven....o-well....

10rhrk...Didn't do the 120, not that wealthy!..Did the cams and lifters, Ness big Sucker, V&H Power Duals, V&H Black Widow Mufflers... tuned by a really experienced tech...I cant say how Buddies skills would affect a race...we did it 3 times, smoked him all 3 times...It is just extremley fast now. And cool runnung. The tech that tuned it was even surprised.

I like my wife's 2012 Triglide. I've riden it a few times by myself. I think it has plenty of power just with the stage 1 setup she has now. I'll be 70 my next Birthday. Might start looking at Trikes in 5 or 10 years for myself. Ride safe!

I'd say that the width of the trunk is about the same as the bag-to-bag width of a bagger. The trunk is taller where the bags would be. Then add the fender width and there's just nowhere for the air to go. It eventually gets around, but there is a huge dead spot, most likely a high pressure area, that resides right around the rider and passenger boards. So that cat, running at 1000 degrees, is throwing off heat right into that high pressure dead zone.

As it comes from the factory the 103 is no ball of fire, the only difference between it and a 96 is 7 ci with everything else the same. I've seen numerous before tuning dynos of both 96's and 103's. On average the 96 comes in at 65hp and 77-78ft/lb torque and the 103 comes in at 69hp and 83ft/lb torque so a difference of around 4 hp and 5ft/lb torque is not much considering. Now toss in a set of cams and a tune on the 103 and you can see 87hp with 97ft/lb torque, the extra power and torque from cams and tune will more than make up the weight difference of the lighter bike with the lackluster performing 103.

All points well made and true.

When mine was in stock form the one thing I noticed was if the motor got hot (happened any time it was over 80 degrees out), it fell flat on its face after a few miles. But when it would do that, I would just give myself more time to pass and lower my expectations of how I thought it should accelerate.

You are correct Bobs... All good points well made. Here in the West,,we have to deal with a lotta very large mountains, which result in a variety of long steep grades. There are lots of steep mountain highways and freeways here in Idaho and eastern Oregon that are 3 to 5 miles long and even longer in some areas. Very Steep too. White Bird Pass,,Cabbage Hill,, 6 to 7% grades and many miles long. When riding 2 up.....I didnt like shifting down to 4th gear to try and keep at 50 mph. And that is what I used to have to do,, not to mention the heat issue going on too...Could not pass trucks pulling 5th wheels and trailers. Had to stay behind them to draft and keep up!! Do not have that issue now. 70 mph in 6th all the way to the top on any of them. Geography will also play a part in what you need for power. I will use that as an excuse to upgrade power! LOL I do not worry about fuel milage,, never check it, have no idea what I get. Have to fill it anyway and it is only 6 gallons!..not an issue for me.

LOL! My MPG has been marginal from the beginning. Now that I have my Roll-a-Home trailer, I can & will carry extra gas in the storage box.

That is a good idea..If you do some camping, gas stations might be scarce out there.
