Hello all, new to the forum. Looking at these two close to home. The 2018 has about 73k miles, black one owner. Well maintained, needs to be detailed. Probably get it for about $10k. The other is a 2010 with about 53k miles beautiful red one owner well maintained, about the same price. Of course I like the looks of the red one, but realize I'd be giving up more power, cooler running, latest and greatest.

I currently own a 2013 Road Glide so am fully aware of the Twin Cam models. I'm uninformed about the M8 engine, concerned about water pump issues, higher maintenance??
Thanks for any feedback

Early M8s including some MY18s had problems with oil transfer from tranny to primary. H-D corrected by adding a vent so make sure this one has that. And some early M8s had problems with sumping. I had an '18 TG and never had any problem. With the 2018 I think the M8 is a better motor than the TC. Also 2010 model getting old so parts and even repairs may be harder to come by. 2018 has Rushmore upgrades - redesigned fairing, canbus electrics, BoomBox infotainment with built in gps. IMO the 2018 is a better way to go. Good luck whatever you choose.

I had a 2017 m-8 107 and 2020 M-8 114. I had two motors replaced in the 2017 due to sumping. The 2020 was okay. Using the VIN # check and see what service upgrades were performed on the 2018 before purchasing, especially the oil pump upgrades relating to sumping. For a trike they were always underpowered until the M-8s came out, especially the 114 motor. I'm currently on a 2015 trike after those mentioned above for numerous reasons.

Both bikes have enough mileage that pre-purchase they should have a Leak-Down test done.

One, or both, may pass or fail, but it would save you a lot of frustration and money to avoid purchasing one that failed the test.

No matter what anyone tells you, you can NOT tell if there is a problem by riding, listening, or observing the exhaust. A leak-down test is the only way to know if the engine is in good shape in the cylinders and heads.

If they are both in good shape, as others have said, the M8 is a significant jump up from the 2010.

Regarding your question about repairs and maintenance, the M8 can be more expensive if there are issues, AND the M8 engine runs hotter than the Twin Cam. HD deleted the oil cooler on the M8 Tri Glides. (n)

Here's a vid on Leak-Down testing, it is not expensive, nor particularly difficult to do.

Thank you guys for all your suggestions! Actually it's a 2019 so that's better. I drove it today, (1st time on a Trike ever!) Had some difficulty getting out of there barn and to his driveway, he kept saying "turn it, turn it!" I felt like an old woman! Did ok once I got on the road, I thought it steered easier than what I was led to believe. Rides rough though, may try adjusting the shocks (probably won't help though, just like my Road glide ended up putting some Super Shox's on it.
I gave him another $2k (total of $12k) for the 2019. It drove and ran great, so I am going to just accept whatever comes my way regarding g repairs.
