What Did You Do To Your Freewheeler Today?

Just so everyone knows, I tried installing NGK CR9E spark plugs in my M8 2017 Freewheeler & the wire end of that plug is not correct. It does not have the small piece that you screw onto the threads.

I will post more when I finish sorting my mess out. I know numerous times in the past I bought spark plugs & that little metal piece to screw on the threads was in the box, but not this time.

Some days peanuts, some days shells:laugh:.

So I returned the 4 NGK CR9E plugs to Advanced Auto Parts & got my $11 back and drove to Doc's HD for the OEM plugs for my 2017 M8 Freewheeler. If anyone is interested, it's HD p/n 31600012 & the plugs are labeled 6R10.

$4.45 per plug with my military Vets discount + tax.

The lesson learned is sometimes OEM parts are good, especially when there only $8 more.

I am not done yet with replacing the spark plugs & installing the new Thunderbolt 50 plug wires, due to the spark plug mix-up, but there are a couple items worth noting:

1. The original plugs I pulled, at 2 years & 8,500 miles, looked great. They could have been left in with no performance issues at all. They also looked exactly the same. This next set will go 3 years.

2. The original plug wires are nylon wire tied to the frame, and I have not given them a through inspection, but where they were tied, they were too tight & cut the outer insulation.

The new wires are so much better quality, it won't be a issue, plus I will install them properly.

I did wiring bundle installations on F18's at McDonnell Douglas & you use a manual gun to tighten & cut those nylon tie wraps & if the gun is not set properly, you can damage cables.

The stock spark plug cables are also very flimsy IMO.

I finished my installation of the new plugs, plug wires & the DK Customs air wing deflectors.

I have not got to go for a ride yet, but its running strong. I am going to do a separate post on the new plug wires later.

UPDATE: I forgot to mention, while I had the tank off, I checked every bolt I could get to and found nothing loose. I also inspected all the wiring routed along the frame & found no issues.

It doesn't look like I'm riding today as it's been storming for 12 hours & we have another 36 hours to go.

Wow, you guys are taking a big hit with all this rain

Has the flooding settled down any?

I saw the damage on the weather channel, it sure sucks

Rivers are receding a little, but there are still hundreds of roads closed & widespread damage.

It's a terrible situation & it will take months to resolve.

I got a 90 mile ride in today mainly along the roads that run along the Missouri river.

My Freewheeler is simply running great. It's amazing to me that minor changes make such a big difference in performance. I'm talking about,

A tank lift kit ( I selected a 1.5" deluxe)

Taylor performance spark plug wires

An external breather system.

K&N Air filter in the stock box.

Cooling wing deflectors

Thanks again to DK Customs for great products.

I forgot to add that many of the roads along the Missouri river have water up to the edge of the road & farmers fields still have water on them. It's gonna be awhile till it's back to normal.

I got a 75 mile ride in to visit family & it was steamy with 93° real temps & a heat index of 97:Turkey::blush:

That's hot enough. My FW is running great though. When I got my good deal on a boatload of Redline products, the boxes included a couple bottles of their concentrated fuel system cleaner. Once a month I have been adding 2 oz. of it to my tank for preventive maintenance.

When it's gone, I will go back to Seafoam.

Went on a 75 mile family group ride today. I led, my wife rode her trike and my son followed on his Sportster.

Beautiful weather and scenery.

It was my wife's first time riding solo on roads. She done good. It was a mix of two lane roads, highway up to 55, and some in town stop and go. We kept the speeds in check. Up until today I always rode with her as a passenger to guide her.

We will need some pictures to verify all this quality work.

I am trying to use the uploader. I'm choosing the file click done and then nothing in the box where the file name should be. Is this site on tapatalk?

Hope you get this picture thing figured out. There is a sticky on How to Post pictures which is a video by Papa Zook on this forum. Really want to see your upgrades.

I am planning on a nice late morning/early afternoon ride to nowhere in particular.

You all enjoy the holiday.

Update...I did 45 miles and my baby is running great, but it's too damm hot.

I also talked to my middle son in southern California & he said riding his Dyna is not that much fun when the road is shaking during an earthquake. :AGGHH:

I installed a Custom Dynamics luggage rack LED light bar. Should have been a simple install but after installing (followed directions to the letter) and plugging the connectors together the light didn't work. I noticed that the wiring pigtail that plugs into the rear lights harness on the Freewheeler had a red / black / blue wire going into the connector and the wire pigtail from the light had a red / black /yellow wire.

The wires from the light bar are loose and not snapped into the JAE half connector so you can feed the wires through the luggage rack rail and into the trunk. So, after running the wires into the trunk and through the plastic plug in the trunk and into the space under the seat I snapped the wires into the connector plug half, connected it to the wiring harness connector half and turned on the ignition....no light, running or braking.

Called tech support and they said "you must have the wires hooked up wrong". I asked, why is there a red / black / blue on one side of the connector and red / black / yellow on the other side when the instructions says to match up the wire colors? I don't know he said. I will pull one from stock and check and call you back. While waiting I check wire to wire hook-up with my test light and then hooked wires direct to battery....everything worked correctly.

Tech support called back and said their wire colors were the same as what I had and that I had connected them up correctly. I messed with the connector, unplugged the individual wires several times and re-seated them but could not get the light to work with the supplied JAE connectors. Cut the JAE connectors off and used individual wire to wire connectors...light works perfectly.

Sorry for the long post but pretty aggravating. Should have been a 30 - 45 minute project instead of 2 hours. Never had this problem before with Custom Dynamics products but in the end it worked out.
