Re: Post Your VW Trike Pictures HERE

Hi

I have a large fan assisted oil cooler to help with the cooling. To run without cooling fan and tins is very common practice in Sweden and there are a number in the UK.

I am running Honda CBR carbs. In the picture you will see the manifold I fabricated. Just got to build another for the other side.

When you have the time

When you have the time check out our winter project in my pic's. My wife's trike makeover and a new pull behind trailer. :Excited:

Re: Post Your VW Trike Pictures HERE

sure wish i could bend pipe that good.by the way, any idea what it costs to chrome a handlebar,or even powdercoat one?and, can you powdercoat over old chrome?

Re: Post Your VW Trike Pictures HERE

I have not bent the pipe it is welded at the angles. Once all ground flush this gives a sharper angle then what you get if I had bent the pipe. Got the idea from watching American Chopper.

I am in the UK. Chroming, I suspect, is probably much more expensive than in the US.

I imagine that if you want perfect results then all old chrome should first be removed.

Re: Post Your VW Trike Pictures HERE

I'm new to this forum. I bought my 1st trike a few weeks ago (1971 VW). It needs a little carb work but it is licensed and does run.

welcome aboard glad you joined us. Find a good VW old school mechanic and they will fix you right up.

I luckily found a guy who has been building and selling VW Trikes for years. He’s only about 20 min. away. We’ve talked on the phone but I haven’t been out there yet.

Hi Shadowlord

Nice trike....

An extra enjoyment out of triking can be maintaining/modifying it yourself as well as the ridding of it.

Got any friends that could help you ?

I enjoy the modifications and some general maintainence (Not the really big stuff). I don't have friends that can help me work on it (I work 3rd shift).
I did meet the local VW Guy (Bob). His a "good ol boy" from Georgia. I liked him. Between him and I we will keep this thing alive for along time.

Re: Post Your VW Trike Pictures HERE

I got my carb issue corrected. The problem was that most the gasket was missing. Once that was replaced, the motor was able to idle and run great. :woohoo:

Shadowlord welcome and thats a great looking Trike!!! I have one similer to that one nice find!! RIDE SAFE!!!

frozenshrimp,
How do you like the side shift? The way mine was pieced together, it did not shift smoothly and the ball on the bottom of the lever regularly popped out. My VW Guy (Bob) recommended that we relocate it to an upright position and between the legs. I was hesitant (did not want to cut a hole in the body) but we relocated it. I have not put the body on it yet but the new location does seem to shift without binding or popping out. (Hope I did the right thing).

Re: Post Your VW Trike Pictures HERE

Well mine is a autostick trans so I don't have to shift very much so with it being a side shift it works out great. I have seen alot of the top shift on the standard trans and I think if mine was a standard that is were I would put it.. Ride Safe !!!

Re: Post Your VW Trike Pictures HERE

Hi Duane: You lucky man. I love your trike. I use to ride a Goldwing but I sold it last Feb. Now I am looking for a Roadhawk. If I can't find a good one then I will build one if I can find a body. I go to Yuma every winter. Have you seen many VW trikes in AZ. ? Maybe I can find one out there this winter.

Re: Post Your VW Trike Pictures HERE

You can put the shifter on the side and it not bind at all, just have to get it align up right and works free all the time.

Re: Post Your VW Trike Pictures HERE

My father built it. He recently passed away and now its mine. He rode right up until he got too sick at 84 years old. And yea, I gotta love the boattail.

Re: Post Your VW Trike Pictures HERE

Hi

This is what I am building mid engine no cooling tin - 345 wide tyres 15 x 12 wheels.

Building everything myself including frame.

Have parted engine from gearbox by 6" so that the wheels could be made very narrow. Each axle is only 6" long. Building extended bell housing to house clutch mechanism and slave cylinder which will all be hidden in side the new bell housing. Starter motor will be moved to the underside.

I am using CBR 900 carbs split in two.

You have any updated pics of your trike build?

Re: Post Your VW Trike Pictures HERE

This is an image of the type of trikes we market here in Australia , I operate Panther Trikes Victroria, a division of Panther Engineering of Gosford, New South Wales

OH YA! wow I want one of these !!!!!!ThumbUp

Re: Post Your VW Trike Pictures HERE

That is going to be one sharp trike! Love the big rear wheels :)

Re: Post Your VW Trike Pictures HERE

Looks like going to be a very nice trike.
Is it going to be rigid? and going to be a short trike too, or just me looking at pics wrong, grinn.

Re: Post Your VW Trike Pictures HERE

No it will have suspension but it will be very stiff. Using heavy duty Harley springs at the rear. They will run from the end of the axle and connect to the large metal area above the axle hole.

Yes the trike will be only 8 foot long, about the same as a Harley.

Re: Post Your VW Trike Pictures HERE

Please see latest build pictures.

Frame in primer coat
Gear linkage sorted
Extended bell housing built with clutch mechanism and relocated starter motor
Suspension link arms built
Front forks (Harley Fat boy) and wheel

My previous pictures were mainly mocked up for design purposes. I am now at the dry build stage. No way can they fully fabricate a bike from start to finish in 10 days on biker build off.

Hope you like it.

:D:D:D....i am soooo liking this build...
