Excessive Heat on right leg

I got the new JES Wind Deflectors and there is a big difference in the updraft, and the custom guards to keep my thighs from roasting. After a a ride yesterday I have not only redness but two blisters on my calf on the right side. Thinking of sewing leather in the inside leg of my jeans for protection. Any suggestions???

You can do one of a couple of things. You can get some xieds from DK custom to enriched the trike a bit. Or some floorboard extensions to move the floor boards out from the trike about an inch.

You can buy a non catalytic head pipe , an air cleaner , and some mufflers (or run stock mufflers if you want).. and re-tune. Depending on what you want to do to the motor later on will dictate which tuner you want. For just pipes and aircleaner the xieds, a vance and hines FP3, or a screamin eagle factory download will help some. The factory download is the most lean of the three options but I have it and am fine with how it works. If I were to do it over id probably just get the xied enricheners.

Wards and Love Jugs also sell engine cooling fans to help with the heat. If you have not already done it get some boots that cover your ankles. Trike or no its never a bad idea to ride in boots.

Lots of options. Heat has always been a problem with bikes. You can thank your over reaching Environmental Protection Agency for that one. Good luck.

I have done the maximum extent that I can do, including a full stage I and Wards fans. Mine is still hot, especially if I wear shorts. Haven't got blisters yet, so I may have cooled it down just enough.

The next thing I plan on doing is the DK oil relocator/oil cooler kit. Gotta wait on funds to do it. Maybe before next riding season.

An air cooled v twin is always going to be hot (even with an oil cooler that comes on the bike) but you can cool it down enough so that you do not burn yourself.

Consitter your a brave soul riding in shorts. I have seen others do it on a trike as well. Never been able to. I feel naked without at least jeans. Usually unless it 100 out I have on pants with kevlar in them.

P.S. thanks to the original poster of this question for patience. Sometimes we can get a bit chatty here. I like it but others may be annoyed by it.

Don't know if I'd call it 'brave'. Goofy probably more like it. :qpnmt: I have even rode my 2 wheelers in shorts. Luckily I've only had one accident back when I was a teenager. Of course all it would take is some goofball to pull out in front of me, then I'm naked on the pavement.

I would PM you and tell you to come over to the 'Late Nighters---Unite!' thread to chat, but for some reason I don't have that option....

Appreciate it . I have to hit the hay as its 1:10 a.m. where i am at and I did not get a whole lot of sleep this weekend. I will try to come over and chat another time. Thanks for telling me about it I am up late a lot.

The air cleaner cover on my ultra classic was getting hot enough to melt the nylon thread in the inseam of my favorite riding jeans. I gutted my catalytic converter and installed a screaming eagle stage one breather, screaming eagle tuner then had it dyno tuned. While I had the exhaust off I wrapped it with header wrap. Now I can hold my hand on the breather. After almost 600 miles this weekend I think all the work was worth it.

I waited over a year to de-cat the stock head pipe. I wish I had done it sooner.

I'm also one of those who rides with Harley Boots and jeans (or armored riding pants when doing highway miles).

I also have 1" floor board extenders. I have a set of billet 2.25" floor board extenders (extremely strong) if interested message me for details.

Bob :D

Good Afternoon HDBob, (Sorry to make this a post, I tried to IM but the systems says I cannot)

I know it was a long time ago, but do you still have these or know where they came from? I am helping an amputee friend with a mod on his Freewheeler that needs to bump the RH Floorboard mounts out 2.25" in order to enable a modified floorboard to captivate his prosthetic and clear the air intake.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Here is a setup I saw in a couple of other forums that tglidestuff used to sell. I am not sure if they are still around. But if anyone know of something like this out there, I would appreciate hearing from you.

I have a design and will ultimately fab something. But is there is something out there to do this... why re-invent the wheel

Bob. Where can I get the billet 2" extender? Have a 2019 Tri Glide

Extra shields

I made a set of extra shields for my exhaust out of a 4" echo tube I bought at a muffler shop - these are mounted directly over the factory shields - Trust me , They work

My pipe configuration is different than yours, but I haven't really thought about blistering heat since I had mine ceramic coated. I don't know if that's an option for you or not. Otherwise I like the additional heat baffle idea.

I like the baffle idea also

However IMO the Twin Cam and the M8 run too hot for their own good

I fear the baffle whilst keeping the heat off the legs is still trapping the heat inside the pipe

I would prefer to lower the running temp on my engine, Kevin @ D K Customs has worked on this pretty intensive. With his ideas I have got my M8 temp down;)

Heat Issue

Actually because they are mounted about 1/2 inch off the other shield they allow air to flow under and between them helping them actually draw heat away from the pipes - I've had them on long enough to tell you that i will never take them off - I have since mad a small triangular shield to cover the elbow section - They do more than just save you leg - Simple fix to a age old problem

I also installed the mid frame deflectors , 1" floor board extensions ,and straight threw louvered baffle slip-on mufflers - My next project will be a tank lift

I understand the dynamics here

The main problem is these engines run TOO hot for their own good

Cooling them down is a win win for longevity JMO;)

Check your head temp and oil temp just for grins

Oh my! Lot's of band-aids being applied without addressing the fact that these things run too hot.

Covering up/shielding the heat may temporarily make the owner of a Twin Cam or M8 feel better...but it is actually trapping the heat, making the already too hot engine run even hotter.

The best solution, for rider/passenger comfort And for engine performance/longevity, is to reduce the amount of heat (not cover it up).

Reports on heat and what can/should be done about it are in the following two links-
