Update Avon Cobra Trike tire

Trike tire

Everyone that has the tire seems to be more then satisfied. In a few weeks I will put in an order myself if I have anything left after tax time......

PS: Im no longer confused by the product numbers. Now that Ive had the time. The tread pattern is the same on all these tires. AV71 is the correct prefix. J&P is wrong here. Seems its the speed rating that changes the product number. So An AV71 whether it says trike or not as long as its H rated. Its correct......I think:)

WRONG!

If it doesn't say "COBRA TRIKE" embossed on the sidewall it is NOT the trike tire. Avon makes an almost identical standard front tire but it is not the trike tire.

+1 on that MH.

I think people are over thinking the whole thing. Just make sure the tire is embossed with TRIKE on the side wall!

Wow! ...... today I came home, slipped the battery back into it, put the seat back on and took it for a short test ride. Almost immediately I noticed that the ride was some smoother over pavement joints, etc with the new radial and it does steer "smoother" some how. Don't misunderstand .... it steered great before, but now it just has a different "quality". Not harder like before the rake .... and not really a featherweight like after the rake ..... it's still easy with no increased effort but now it seems like it has a damper that holds a line better. Hard to explain.

"It's as easy to steer, but now it stays put better" ..... does that sound right?

Ran it up to highway speed on some new pavement .... it's definitely a smooth tire .... and NO "Buzzzzzz" at 30-35 mph.

Anyway .... you can color me "PLEASED"! :)

I neglected to say that I did swap the brake pads over with the rotors and I also threw 2 ounces of Airsoft Red Jacket BBs in through the bead using a small funnel before inflating the tire yesterday evening .... and judging by how smooth she is, it was enough.

I will take your word on that. I had no intention of ordering the bike tire. That's why I added "I think" after going through all the product numbers and specs.

Seemed Identical to me.

Ron that's why I added the qualifier. Had no intention of ordering the bike labeled tire.

+1, couldn't have said it better! That has been my experience with Avon tires on two wheels or three.

Took 240 mile maiden run and ........

What can I say ......

...... I love this new Avon Cobra TRIKE radial that I put on our '97 GL1500 / Lehman Trike. Before today I had only had the trike out for the one short 7 or 8 mile local ride on local roads at 55 mph or less and while it "promised" a good ride, that was not a great test.

Today, "Wife Unit" and I got up early, coffeed up, etc .... and by 8:30 am were on the road to meet up with other chapter folks about 45 miles from home on Rt 11, about 10 miles of I-81, and Rt 250 west to Churchville and from there, we lead the group over to Highland County for the "Highland Maple Festival" ..... then we rode up to Franklin, WV for a late lunch and then took Rt 33 back across the mountains to Va. and then the ride down 11 home. Total mileage for "Wife Unit" and I was near 240. Speeds ranged from 65-70 on a super smooth portion of I-81, lots of 55-60 on good state primary highway, lots of 50-55 on not so smooth state secondary roadway in the mountains over ridges and along side creeks and "South Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River". Lots of tight curves, sweepers, straights, smooth, rough, and some loose material thrown in.

I've ridden these same roads a bunch over the years and this radial soaks up the bridge expansion joints and roadway irregularities that accompany patches as found on these roads as a mild "nudge" instead of the harsh "thump" of the bias tires .....

and putting this tire on was like adding a steering stabilizer as well. That low speed twitch one feels as the rear wheels go over irregularities at angles, where the handlebars are pulled left and right .... that is diminished to the extent you don't even notice it. Likewise, when you go into a turn, high speed or low, the handlebars tend to stay where you intended with less shake when there's a ripple or dip or other rough spot running across the roadway. Owing to all of that, this tire is far less tiring on the rider on these not so smooth crooked mountain roads. I am sure that "Wife Unit" is tired of hearing me say how much I like this tire, but it's such a huge improvement up front.

There may someday be developed a better front tire for the "trike" but for now ..... no MPA or M-50 compares. I've had both, and as far as the Bridgestone option ..... judging just from riding other trikes with the Bridgestone, I'd say it beats that too.

I know, $155 and up is not cheap, but when looked at in terms of added smiles per mile ... it's a good deal and even if I only get 3-4 years or 10-15,000 miles out of it, I'm sold.

I took off my wheel while my Wing is at the dealer to have it chromed. It came back yesterday. Boy it sure looks nice. But it required patience and a lot of elbow grease to clean out the bearing races that had been chromed. I also had to tap put the rotor bolt holes and one of the rotors was too tight, causing me to grind a little off the inside of it to fit on the hub. Here are some photos of the wheel just after it arrived and after the build up and tire mounting.

Avon 130/70R18

Ok, here is a newbie question. I am having a 2014 Honda Goldwing triked (Motortrike) and had a question about the front tire. Right now it has the stock front tire. My friend (Tndragonrider)
said to just use the OEM tire until it wears out.

So my qestion is, is this a good idea? How much difference will there be between the OEM tire and a new Avon Trike Tire. I want the best ride right from the start. I am leaning toward buying the Avon tire as I want my front wheel chromed anyway and replacing the OEM tire. Yes, the OEM tire has lots of tread, I understand it has less then 5,000 on it. I bought the bike used.

Thanks for your opinions

MrJohn I thought that your front tire only has several hundred miles on it since it was replaced under a warranty issue by the dealer?

From everything that I have read, the Avon tyre is probably the best handling and ride quality front tire for the trike. But if $$ is no object, then by all means pull off the OEM tire and replace it with the Avon, right from the start. The only reason I suggested that you keep it, was to save $$$. And you could go with the Avon after you wear out the OEM tire. Most here would tell you to change it since you indicated it had somewhere up to 5,000 miles. You should be able to get between 3-4,000 miles out of it before it requires replacing.

The only reason I swapped out my almost new Dunlop Elite 3 was that I will be going on a 10,000 mile trip in a couple of months and I did not want to have to mess with a front tire replacement during it.

Mr Tndragonrider. I don't know how many miles was on the new OEM tire when I bought it. I just wanted opinions on folks who have done both which would help me decide. After spending what I have on this Bike so far, another $154.00 is peanuts.

Since the Road Smith Auxiliary Gas Tank won't work on my HD built Tri-Glide, I'm going to put a 18" Front Wheel on mine and this looks like a great tire. Can't find too much about it yet but worth a shot.

Only other option I was looking at was staying with 16" and putting a Dunlop American Elite MT90B16 Rear Tire on the front. The Mutli Tread should give it longer life.

Still running my Dunlop Mt90B16 front tire (backward rotation) 14,000 miles no cupping and plenty of tread left.

Your OEM front tire on a 2014 GL1800 was a Bike Radial. It will have softer sidewalls than the bias ply Michelin or Battleax or Metzler rear tires which were the "hot ticket" ..... until the Avon Cobra Trike Radial (IMHO).

The Avon Trike Radial is designed for a Trike. Your current bike radial is not intended for a trike, but it'll work well for a starter ..... and however as long as it would last as a two wheeler, it'll wear much faster on a trike now with all wear near center.

If money is no object .... I'ld suggest maybe searching Ebay for another GL1800 front wheel, have that one chromed, put the Avon Trike Radial on that one ..... and running the current tire in the meantime while you hone your trike based muscle memory and get used to supporting your own upper body while turning the curves, etc. Do lots of figure 8s in partking lots not traveled .... and hone braking skills as well. Practice some avoidance using markers, etc in big spaces too.

Just my suggestion. ;)

CrystalPistol

I wanted to do something close to what you suggested. I have a Avon Trike tire coming as well as new bearings. If the ride is a lot better with the Avon versus the stock tire I would just go with the Avon right from the start. I just wanted to ask those folks who have done it both ways and see what they thought. My friend was able to borrow a tire/wheel while his Bike was being triked so he could send off his wheel to be chromed but I don't have a spare or intend on buying one right now. I probably will wait until after mine is triked, then send off my wheel to be chromed.

Yeah ...... "Sure You Will ....." ;) :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

You'll get back a trike and then realize that the choice is ....

.... "I can ride now in good weather with the OEM front tire and wheel" ....

.... vs ....

.... "I can now remove the wheel, then remove the "still safe with good tread" OEM tire, send my good wheel to a chrome shop, wait for weeks as I sit on trike with the front end propped up on blocks and "dream" while Spring slips on by" ....

If it was me .... I'ld either get a spare wheel or borrow my buddy's ....

send it off for chrome .... and ride my new trike ASAP ....

.... or make that chrome job a winter task. No way I'm gonna get a new trike and delay the ride for chrome. Knowing what I know now, having ridden mine with various front tires over the years, knowing how simple a front tire change is in my basement, I'ld go ahead with a Cobra Trike tire and save the OEM for a spare in case something untowards ever happened .... or give / sell it to a buddy.

But it ain't me.:D

Your original front tire has more sidewall flex as mentioned be sure to run it full inflation or corners and wind may adversely affect your steering.

SOLUTION?

STEAL YOUR BUDDYS WHEEL AND TIRE!:clapping:

Once I saw my kit installed with the chrome directional rear wheels I could not stand looking at the stock front wheel--it had to go. I told my dealer to find me a chromed front wheel that could go on and then send back the stock wheel for the core charge. They did--it wasn't cheap--but man did it look sweet when they had it switched out. ThumbUp

You'll be glad you did this if you're not already. :)

Avon trike tire

image1.JPGI have put over 7000 miles on it and could not be happier!
Cant say enough about the Avon went to Longmont CO from the Toledo Ohio area on a trip and put on 5647 miles. No problems with tire wear, handled great and doesn't feel like the Trike is going to push through the corners and go off- roading on me.
I tried the rear tire in the front mounted backwards idea and tossed the tire in the trash after 250 miles awful!
Low speed wobble vibration just didn't feel right.
I use Avon Cobras on my two wheeler and love them will surely replace the Trike tire with another Avon after it needs it.
I will be interested in how long this tire lasts will keep you all posted.
Hope this helps! (cheapest I have seem is 198.00)

You need to keep looking cause I found one yesterday at Dennis Kirk for $156. Jake Wilson is another usually good tire source for me. There are others too. BTW - that is the price with free shipping. Still have to pay to mount.

I am still really satisfied with my Avon Trike tire and will buy another when the time comes. Only 8K on it so far.

I must also say that you have a beautiful Trike, really looks nice.ThumbUp
