Update Avon Cobra Trike tire

Need help with getting the right front tire. Need 17" (Harley conversion) with NWW. All I see in ads are black wall tires. Any help appreciated

They do not make the Avon Trike Specific Front Tire in 17" size .... only 16" for Harley and 18" For Honda see 2 pages further back for the Avon Posted page on go to Avonmoto.com and search

The softer radial ride with less plys makes me picture the rubber rolling off the wheel in a dire event when you need some steering most...The new Avon trike specs states 2 ply sidewall, Maybe 3 on the tread verses 5 and 3 for Mich.
Is there a comparison to market the new tire ?

Tread depth alone will not answer your question IMO. Tire compound, footprint, etc. all play into it. Since Avon designed this tire specifically for trikes I would assume they changed the dynamics of the tire to more suit the trike needs rather than a bike.

As I've said before, in the Arkansas twisties where I live and do most of my riding, we (5 GW trikes) all average 11-13 k miles. Our turns and chip-and-seal roads really eat tires. Time will tell if Avon improves this. However, the ride and handling are so much better that I will purchase the Avon Cobra Trike tire again if it justs gets the same mileage. Anything higher will be a bonus.

you are correct according to the article I read about it they said is flatter in the center and side walls were stiffer as well that's all I remember:xzqxz: oh ya they said new compound in this tire- longer wear etc.. this try'n to remember is give'n me a head ache !!

in a dire condition when you need some steering most... The bias sells because its strong. Where is the comparison if they want to seel it ?

Really? Are you running bias ply tires on your cage? See any sports cars using bias ply tires?

Keep in mind that the 10/32" is for the Harley MT90-16 BIAS trike tire and the GL1800 130/70R-18 is a radial and JPCycles.com specs tread depth at 4.5mm which is a shade more than 6/32. 4mm is a significant amount of tread.

Since this is the Honda trike forum, I suspect the Harley trike tire info won't help much.

when you click on new post, all the forums show up.;)

A rider posted he went 20+ miles on a flat Mich Pilot.

Im asking for the tuffness of the front tires available to us.

As only one front tire steering. I picture down hill on a curve next to guard rails.

I want the strongest tire in that catagory, and after calling Avon tech about the

2 ply nylon sidewall on the new trike tire, I'm getting Dwgs and details how the Cobra Trike radial ply's wrap around the sidewall and beads. They said I can copy paist the Pic, even though its for another Cobra, The trike Cobra has 4 bottom/2 side ply's.

We'd like comparison resistance to failure but doesn't exist I guess.

I have worn out allot of metzlers, but like the Mich pilot, I dont like the groove

pattern, as its design invites cupping and gets worse from there.

Result ? most miles ridden with a cupped tire. I went to a Mich Commander 2

front tire on the BMW to get away from the bad design of the grooves.

look at it. The bad cupping is at the intersection of the grooves.

I dont care if its Radial or bias, give me a strong flexable tire to take abuse.

The Av Cobra might keep rubber on the wheel in a dire event better ?

If this guess is right, Why don't they address it ? We want to know

The Cobra profile looks lower but measures 25.5 verses 25.63 MichPilot.

Time will tell, more miles and experiences will show up.

avon tire

Too soon for me to tell - (3K milis) But even if the milages is the same or even if its a bit less -- I really like the bigger footprint it puts on the road. I can feel the difference. I would and will buy another....

BIg foot print steering harder ?

Is the steering harder to overcome the big footprint ?
I want to try one.
I had a steering issue with a BMW pull to the right.
to identify the amount, I put a fish scale on the handle bar
before and after changing something.
It was 5 lbs PTTR before

My steering was actually easier. Much smoother overall in ride and handling.

Can you give us a report back here after 10K miles, if it lasts tht long?

I got a little over 11,000 miles riding almost exclusively in the Arkansas twisties which eats trike front tires. Bought another one because I'm so happy with the ride and handling of the Avon Cobra Trike tire. I will stay with this until something better comes along.

Hi, Does this mean you wore it out in 11,000 miles ?

Pulled the trigger ......

Ordered my very own Avon Cobra Trike Radial Front Tire .... size 130/70R-18 .... part #90000020646 and it should be here in a couple-few days. $153.88 & free shipping.

Plenty of time for install and some maintenance items in time before our planned "Highland Maple Festival" ride. Expecting "good things", be taking a half worn Michelin Pilot Activ off, looking forwards to that better ride and steering y'all promised ....... with NO buzzzzzzing. ;)

Later ..........

Yes. All of the trikes here average between 11-13K miles if we stay near home. The twisties and chip-n-seal roads eat them up. Flatlanders almost always get double the mileage, at a minimum, of what we do. Just the price of living in this great riding country I guess. :)

Avon Cobra Trike Tyre

Any update (as of Feb 2015), on the new Avon Cobra Trike specific tire ?
Thanks..............

G'day Hocky

I fitted the Avon last month (Jan '16) and have done 6000km (3750mls) since then. The profile shape has broadened and presents a larger footprint on the road surface. I do a lot of open distance riding in Oz, on not so great hard surface back roads pulling a trailer.
Still early days yet. Wear is minimal. Positive feedback through the bars and has excellent manners when going into corners 'hot' and on wet country roads.
More later when I have put more distance on the tyre and it gets more exposed to the elements.

Well .... ordered late late Saturday night the 20th (actually near midnight) from Chaparral using an Ebay ad. anticipated delivery Monday the 29th .... it was on the carport this afternoon the 23rd. Not sure where the tire came from but every address I can find points to San Bernardino, Ca. That's pretty swift.

Guess I'll be working on that later this week .... maybe tonight after supper. For the record, I measured the tread depth in several places being sure to miss the TWI with two gages and found it to be 6.5 / 32nds which is a gnat's hair above 5 mm (6/32nds is 4.76 mm).

If mounted as intended .... NOT reversed .... then the loading on the tread "blocks" (really big slabs, not small blocks) is across from center to rear following the general direction of the grooves .... as scarce as they are. Personally .... I LIKE what I see ..... looks like the tread would experience minimal scrubbing.

Also, the tread is rounded with a gentle arc so that it's profile new is a lot like a worn Michelin PA that's on the Trike (minus the cupping). In point of fact ..... it was easily stood up on it's own on the kitchen floor for several minutes.

Date code is 45th week 2015 so it's "fresh" too!

You may want to consider using Dyna Beads for Balancing. They work great for me.ThumbUp

OH YEAH! I am a absolute convert to bead balancing of any narrower tires like 70 series and taller 75 series car & trailer tires and especially MC tires with their round inner profiles that bring the beads to the middle to "do their thing". ThumbUp

I like the Air Soft Hard Plastic BBs but they have to be dumped in through the bead area ..... but they can be vacuumed out the same way if desired. I will be using the Dyna Beads next time I put tires on my '74 Triumph though, it uses tubes. I may even order some for the Trike tire .... want to put it on next week.

Not recommended as a sole method on wider profile tires with wide flat bottoms in the inner profile like 60-55-50 series tires, I have had success using a few as a supplement to normal weight balancing .... but only after much trial and error. At first I was putting in too much and those wide floors allow beads to go side to side so while the tire may be balanced in one direction, side to side gets thrown off. Now I limit myself to 2 ounces in those cases .... if I insert any.

Installed Avon

Well, today I came home early and went to work on the Trike, 92,154 miles .... removed MPA and installed Avon Cobra Trike radial. 41 PSI .... then spent time detailing as I put it together. Pads were near new as just installed new pads in September.

Almost done and then noticed the oem left side rotor was worn a little more than the right. Measured, left down to 5.0 mm ..... right was 5.2mm. Left is on rear system .... so I took wheel back off and swapped rotors left to right side .... checked runnout after torqueing .... all good .... the pads will bed in easy enough.

I like the looks of this tire .... maybe tomorrow after work I'll get a "test ride" in?

Good, let us know. Most everyone seems satisfied!

Everyone that has the tire seems to be more then satisfied. In a few weeks I will put in an order myself if I have anything left after tax time......

PS: Im no longer confused by the product numbers. Now that Ive had the time. The tread pattern is the same on all these tires. AV71 is the correct prefix. J&P is wrong here. Seems its the speed rating that changes the product number. So An AV71 whether it says trike or not as long as its H rated. Its correct......I think:)

WRONG! If it doesn't say "COBRA TRIKE" embossed on the sidewall it is NOT the trike tire. Avon makes an almost identical standard front tire but it is not the trike tire.
