I thought I had this gremlin whipped but, it has returned!

Had my conversion done last summer and didn't get to ride it much till almost October. I bought a parade fan as I figured the only place I would really need it was in slow traffic.
we came home from mountain view, mo. sunday and it was about 90 degrees
high humidity and a long ride. when I pulled off the highway a could hear the lifters rattling. got it home and shut it off. went out about an hour later ,checked the oil it was fine. started right up and sounded good again. had the same problem 4th of july parade.

ordered an ultra cool oil cooler . looks like a good product. hope it cures it. Now for another oil change.

we were two up and had been riding for about 150miles. no problems till the last 30miles . ran a little harder the last leg (about 75mph)

Harley oil syn 20/50. exhaust is clear as far as I know (rinehart true duals new less than a year ago. equal discharge at the back) no temp gauge. the new cooler I have ordered has a light that will show on the inner faring when the thermostat controlled fan comes on around 230* it is suppose to cycle when it cools down so if it stays on I will know there is still a problem. Trike was given a new pc V tuner a year ago and was dyno-ed at that time. New S&S 551 cam a year ago.

I've had Twin Cams get a little ticking in the valve train when hot and running a multi weight synthetic, it can be increased when cams have been changed. Did you replace the lifters when the cams were installed, if the lifters were replaced what brand lifter did you use?

I have a friend who did head work and cams on his Harley, he kept hearing more of a ticking sound in his top end, drove him nuts looking for it. He had me take it for a ride, the noise was normal for the cam installed on a hot engine.

Hope it works good luck

the dealer used the s.e. lifters after the cam change.

Keep close tabs on the sound of that valve train, SE lifters are not a very good lifter, they're about as bad as the 'C' lifters which are installed from the factory in the Twin Cam.

i ' m having the same problem too.My trike is super HOT . I 've added an oil cooler the oil temp has come down but the trike is almost to HOT to ride . i'm thinking about LOVE-JUGS i already have the HD parade fan

What all has been done to your trike?

Just a thought, don't hate me or flame me. IF you already have the large Harley Parade fan installed, putting 2 smaller ones won't really solve any problems. Instead of the engine heat radiating to your leg, it is blown there. Maybe a degree or two cooler, but hot just the same. Your Tri-glide engine, transmission, and exhaust system aren't any different than an Ultra, or any Harley touring bike for that matter. I have read posts on this board and the "other" one where people talk about wrapping their legs around the gas tank to stay on in turns. Not a good idea! Try moving your feet farther out on the foot boards, and moving your knee away from the air cleaner. An inch or 3 will make a hell of a difference with radiated heat. The catalyst is under your right foot, removing it will reduce the restriction, but your exhaust gas is still over 1000* Best of luck, I hope moving your legs and feet a bit helps, sure did for my wife and I on our '09 and '11 Tri-glides. A shame to have such a wonderful toy and not use it.

I just installed a set of floorboard extenders. They move your feet one inch further away from the heat. Works like a charm. I also have a set of custom made crotch coolers which also help.

following up on the ultra cool reefer unit I installed.

installation was pretty simple. had to take the outer faring off to connect the fans and install the light. it has a dual fan system in front of the oil cooler, and they are controlled by a thermostat. it is suppose to cycle between 230* and 210* .there is a green light that mounts in the faring that lights when they are on. the cooler mounts just below the voltage regulator behind the front fender.

haven't had an open road test yet but around town it seems to work good and it has been 95+* the fans kicked on once after it had been ridden and was sitting running in the garage. so far so good . cost about 340.00 on e bay new.

no more valve train noise .

I think it was the wiz who talked about black ops lifters. are they a direct replacement for the s.e. lifter?

also took my lowers off . may have helped if they had been off to begin with
