Winter Chill - Kills! *Prepairing for Cold Storage*

One thing that should be mentioned if your putting a bike up for the winter,
Make sure you fill the tires with at least 78 Percent Nitrogen. ThumbUp
And don't forget the 21% oxygen,0.003% carbon dioxide, that is the most imprtant parts. The other small stuff is what gets ya!!!!:Coffee:

rhino 2, I guess our sarcasm about our "magic" air compressors put a stop to this thread. ;)<O:p

Give it enough time and it will reappear in a new Tread.
Bye the way what Octane do you use in your bikes.:D

Lots of great info..and FUN!ThumbUp
One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet, many exhaust systems on bikes have a drain hole at the lowest point..often that gets overlooked & can plug up allowing condensation to sit in there and...RUST is usually the result:AGGHH:
I just poke a bit of wire in there to be sure they are open.;)

If you live in snow country, avoid the temptation to take the bike out until a good rain has washed the salt off the roads. Salt will attack the tiniest areas that are scratched or scrapped down to bare metal.

It is also a good idea to avoid starting the bike 'just to circulate the oil'. Condensation is a by product of combustion. If you're not going to ride far enough to get your oil temperature to atleast 160 degrees F and keep it there for 60 minutes or more, you'll do more harm than good.

Cleaning can't be overlooked. Interesting story;;; Had a buddy of mine who several years ago road his Classic to Sturgis in August, never cleaned it, put it in the garage and didn't pull it out until May. When he called me is said the fairing had "pits" in it and he couldn't figure out why. Turned out the bugs that committed suicide on the front of his fairing coming back from his trip were still there in May and the acid had eaten through his clear coat. He tried everything and could never get that fairing to look good again. Bad move and expensive lesson to learn.

Don't winterize, keep the trike in a garage with heater set on min. of 50 degrees and when it gets above 40 degrees and sunny, I'm ready to ride for couple of hours. Can't get my co-pilot out at the temp.
Those that have to store for the winter, I know you will look forward to spring as we all do.

+1 on jtilmon's use of a garage heater. I had a 45k heater installed this fall and the trickle charger hasn't had to work very hard to maintain a charge. A side benefit is that it keeps the car warm and this makes herself happy. She stopped complaining about the cost to install it!! - Russ

Re: Winter Chill - Kills Prepairing for Cold Storage

I was recently advised by my small engine shop to run engine till it runs out of gas if am to store equipment over 30 days------He said over 80 % of his repairs is carburetor work caused by ethanol---also advised against the use of sta-bil with ethanol fuel----

I put sta-bil in my tank but start and run it every three weeks anyway.
Third winter doing it and have had no problems. Do the same thing with my lawn tractors and weed trimmers. Little bit of effort but no repairs so far.:Trike1:

Winter prep? We don't need no stinkin' winter prep!:laugh::laugh:

100-110 degree summers are the price we pay for those 45-55 degree winters.

Ok you Sunny weather year around guys, just keep rubbing it in:D. I'll do a snow and cold weather dance for yous guys this winter so you can enjoy some of the white stuff Mother Nature heaps upon us here in the North eastern parts of the USpepper.

Does anyone use a Bubble? I've used the Harley Bubbles on my two wheelers and never had a problem with condensation or dust during the winters. But I don't see a Harley bubble for the trike.

SF

My dad and I store ours in his heated shop, the only thing we do there is either store the trikes or motorcycles and work on them.

Dead of winter in SoCal the daytime temps drop into the high 50's. Get the Carhartts cleaned, break out the Harley sweatshirts and it's ride time in January. We desert rats get between 6 and 10 inches of rain a year, so that is no problem either.

Ditto as above, but every now an again over the 6-7 months my bikes have to sit for winter{Canada},,, I pull the clutch lever in...Helps to keep things movin and alows oil to get between plates..Just my 2 cents..HB

Heh my friend,:wave4:
You had said in a prior talk about installing a S&S 557 cam. I will be having the same cam installed in two weeks in my 2010 triglide. Could you write me back saying how she runs in the gears and all the good or bad about that cam please. I am also running True duals,Big Sucker ac,and TTS tuner that will be dynoed. thanks for any info.
ThumbUp

Wash and wax, clean the trike up. Put it on the battery charger and take it off when the weather ain't bad. Going to change back tires this winter and all fluids. Probably Lindell brake pads also. ThumbUp
