Curious as to how cold of a temp people have ridden in ( unaided by electronic warmers of any kind; windshields, gloves, jackets ok) For me it was 18 degrees on a 1978 Honda 550 with a Windjammer fairing.

9 degrees in 2000 riding a 2000 Yamaha Royal Star Venture (Millennium Edition). Several of us started out to lunch. I think five or six actually make it the 30 miles.. Some guys didn't get out of the city limits.... :xszpv:

We had an '86 Goldwing that we traded for a Honda Shadow Areo 750. I drove off into the sunset on a March afternoon heading West with the sun in my face. Beautiful ride. Got to site of the trade about 60 miles away. Both of us test drove each other's bikes. All went well and we parted ways. I'd forgotten my parka (which I could wear under my leather jacket) in the trunk of the 'wing. Well heading East on I-69 at 70+ mph, dark, with the temp dropping into the 20*s with no faring, well you be the judge! I was frozen stiff by the time I'd arrived home! Bike ran flawlessly, and my bride (the bike was for her) wanted me to show her all about the bike! I did my best to try and talk to her all about it in the back yard but she couldn't understand much of what I was trying to say! My lips and tongue were pretty much numb beyond usefulness! After a few days, I told her about the bike. The first thing we bought was a faring for it! She's now moved up to a Yamaha V-Star 1100 Classic and loves it!

Sorry about how my last post ended up long and narrow! Don't know how I did it or how to correct it. If any of the moderators can fix it please do. Sorry.

130 miles round trip on a new 99 Sv650, Temps were in the mid 20's.
No fairing just a heavy leather jacket and full face helmet, I thought i was gonna die....:gah:
Now 14 years older and a little wiser??, Now with a Heated jacket under the leather jacket i did the same trip
on the T/G last winter with a smile.

29 degrees on my 06 Ultra Classic going to work. The next was 200 miles in temps from 32 - 35 degrees while Mother Nature tormented my dad and I with Snow, Sleet and Rain.

Low to mid 30's, a little over a month ago, approx. 170 miles, from Grove Okla. to Mulvane Ks. It was freezing rain & sleet. Thought I was never gonna make it home. Stopped every 45 minutes just to get feeling back in my hands. Got a better pair of gloves. :AGGHH::AGGHH:

-3'F for 1 hr two winters ago. Had to stop twice to scrape the inside of my goggles out from fogging that froze. There was a windshield on TG and I had goggles and bandana over my face. Done 0-10'F rides too many times to count.
Left from LI to FL one winter with deep snow and 16'F. Right after flying back from Vancouver on a red eye. Rode straight through to just past Jacksonville.
......Say, these statements can't be used in a competency trial. Can they?:qpnmt:

Rode from Daytona to Atlanta from Bike Week about 4 years ago. Friend had an emergency and had to get home by that morning, so I told him I would do what a good friend does. Ride him in! Left Daytona around 3pm as I recall. It was around 55 degrees. Temps dropped rapidly as a dramatic cold front came in. By the time we got to Valdosta, it was approaching freezing. The "lady" named "Bubbles" :) that had been tagging along with us since we met her riding solo at a gas station on the way down said her goodbyes and got a room. Too cold for her. I am happily married and plan to stay that way, so I was kind of glad, but my buddy was a bit heartbroken until I reminded him that he was married too! We stopped at almost every Waffle House the rest of the way for hot coffee and to thaw out. Pulled into my driveway at 2am. 24 degrees. Took me 2 days to get the chill out of my bones. Ordered the plug in gear the following week. Never been that cold in my life!

Rode the bike to the shop in Terre Haute one winter day. Started out 20 degrees, no windshield and no heated gear. Bundled up the best I could. Wife was following and I stopped about every 15 miles and warm up in the truck. Found a trailer to bring it home.

23 degrees outside. 3 hour ride from Indian Lake Ohio to Monroe, Michigan.
Fingers and Nose frozen to pure numbness even with Winter gloves and Ski
Mask on. Carhart jacket and Pants Kinda saved the rest of me. :xzqxz:

I don't know about competency, I think your not right in the head:laugh:.

Not sure how cold it was, but I do know it was below freezing.

Roads were clear and dry with a slight wind.

I don't have a heated seat or grips and even riding in that temperature, I really didn't need them. The ride must have been around 30 miles. I had my 3/4 helmet, gauntlet leather gloves from Fox Creek and a Joe Rocket Military jacket with the winter liner installed. Yeah, it was a bit cold but nothing that was really uncomfortable. I still prefer the cold weather over the hot summer any time! ;)

Years ago when we were young and stupid (I'm no longer young) we took a break late in the day from snowmobiling in the dead of a Minnesota winter. For those in warmer climes, Minnesota winter temps oft times dip much below freezing. We had all the sledding gear, of course, and also been topping off with the official anti-freeze of snowmobiling, Snowshoe Grog. The cold combined with the Grog had dulled our senses somewhat, and we came to the conclusion that riding the snow machines was pretty much the same as riding a motorcycle, so as the roads were dry and the sun was out, why not? The 4 of us that had bikes went and got them, and I even stopped off at a (much larger) buddy's house and borrowed his leather jacket to wear over my snowmobile suit. We made a ride of close to 12 miles and we learned a few things that day:
>Being young and stupid means that ill-concieved adventures are not only begun, but the sense to end them as circumstances dictate is lacking. (Didn't actually realize this until years later, but that day was the beginning of that thought.)
>The warming effects of Snowshoe Grog (a 50/50 mix of schnapps and brandy) on the body wear off long before the numbing effect on the brain does.
>Riding a motorcycle with the engine below you is not near as warm as riding a snowmobile with the engine in front of you with its heat directed at you by the cowl around the motor.
>It is not easy to ride a motorcycle bundled up in a snowmobile suit.
>A leather jacket gets very stiff at sub-freezing temps.
>Most importantly: NEVER DO THAT AGAIN!

The temp on the bank clock in town: -14°F

-7 degrees - 12 miles one way to work in VA of all places. Exhaust headers burned a deep purple for 6" out of the heads on my '77 CB750F. Burning real lean that morning.

I now live in PA where I commute 52mi. one way to work, and have done that @ 0 degrees, on my trike.

After an April meeting in Zurich a local couple and I went on a 900 mile ride through the Swiss Alps, Italian mountains, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. I was riding a 1200 CC BMW (kinda like a Sportster) and was wearing a Harley Davidson FXRG riding bibs and jacket. In the mountains the temps were in the mid-20's and low 40's in the low country. The only thing that would really bother me was my feet and hands. The trip lasted 5 days and with the exception of 1 1/2 days in the rain I was never miserable.

Don't know what is going on with these 3 word columns.

Back in February on Monday after Valentine's Day, several of us left out in 28 degrees to head to a funeral home 45 minutes away to pickup a Vietnam Veteran who had passed and escort his body back to Florence for the funeral and burial at Florence National Cemetery. Bundled up in leathers, icy patches both ways, snow on the shoulders, but a brother wanted his last ride in my friend's motorcycle hearse. Needless to say, we got it done.

During the great 1982 Blizzard in Kansas City, I owned a 1980 GS 1100E Suzuki..Vetter Windjammer 4 fairing. I rode from Leawood, Ks to North Kansas City, a distance of about 20 miles. It was snowing, with about 4" on the ground and 15 degrees. I rode on I635 doing about 30-45 mph. A highway patrolman followed me to where I was working. I was wearing a snowmobile boots and gauntlet gloves and an open face helmet. He stayed with me all the way to work. When I got off the bike, he said I did a masterful job of riding...and don't let me catch you riding it back home....he didn't!

rode to work one day in late feb. in central Illinois on an 1100cc Yamaha( no faring or helmet). started out about noon, 60 degrees, and sunshine. 42 miles.
to work. when I got off work at 3 am it was 28 degrees and raining little ice pellets. called ahead and had a friend pick up my scuba wet suit and borrowed a helmet with a shield. put my leather on over the wet suit and rode off into the darkness. took about 2 hours to get home . made 1 stop in a car wash to warm up and get out of the freezing rain. noticed I had about 1 inch of ice in places frozen to my leather. the wet suit kept my core warm and I had put my dive gloves on under a big pair of winter gloves. my hands were cold but still functional. long cold ride . not a lot of fun.

In my younger days, I managed the meat dept at Sentry foods.
I had a Honda 305 Scrambler, that I drove it from one side of town to the store and back all winter.
It wasn't 10 miles but it was a lot of fun.
Wisconsin winters are very ugly but I got through the streets.
My father in law was getting a hair cut one day when I drove by the barber shop.
The barber commented about me, wondering who I was.
My FIL stated that I was his crazy son in law.
When I got into Goldwings, they got put to bed during the winter.
I do snowmobile and have ridden in them of -30 below zero.

Back in 1973 I decided to get my Honda 350 out of the barn and ride it one January day. It was about 35 and partly sunny. Rode up north of Cincinnati....About an hour later a front rolled in, temps dropped to 25 and snow coming down like crazy. Got back home riding in 2 inches of fresh snow and 23 degrees. If I would have had a bigger bike I probably wouldn't have made it. The crazy things we do at 28 yrs of age.

1972 Honda 550 with fairing, 35 miles to work and then back. Temp 17 degrees going with 35 mi hour wind. Return was much better, 33 degrees 25 mile wind. LOL

not sure of the year ...wife and I went to a biker get together in northern ill. we stayed to late it was o dark thirty...temps. in the teens.... 90-100 mile to home we ran at about 50 mph...coldest we have ever been for a couple of hours travel time....we would stay over now...we aren't kids any more!!!

Wasnt me, but I think it was Dec 31 1983 in North Central Kansas.
It was in the mid 20s and it was sleeting.
Local movie theater had a 9 to midnite movie for the kids.
I decide to walk the four blocks to the movie.
As I am sliding along, I hear a Harley fire up on the east side
of town.
By the time I get to main street, here he comes. A big guy in
leather with a full beard and long hair. His hair was normally
black, but right now, his beard and hair are ice white and so
is the leather with the ice building on it fast.
I made it to the theater about the time he got home.
A whole mile and a half at 20 mph and he had to have been frozen with
all the sleet on him

I retired from the fire dept. 9 years ago and there was a time at least 20 years before that that I would ride a Yamaha XS eleven to and from the fire house. It had a full fairing, bags and trunk, forerunner to the Venture's, XVZ twelve.
My shift started at 8 AM and ended 24 hours at 8 AM (imagine that). I never kept track of the temps but it was really, really cold. I started out only riding until the temp was down to 40 then I just kept on riding. If the roads were clean I was on the motorcycle. There was a few times when I had to take off of work and take it home because it was snowing and I know that there would be too much snow on the roads in the morning to ride it home.
So that's my story.
P.S. I'd say the ride was about 12 miles.

Low 30's on my '84 Venture Royale for my annual fall foliage ride. It was a very nice clear day but temperatures were abnormally cold. I felt sorry for the guys riding bikes with no fairing or windshield. At the rest stop one rider was practically hugging his exhaust pipe...

I normally stop riding for the year when it gets below 40 degrees...

Back in 1972 on my Honda 450 in New York.
19 degrees about 10 miles to work.
My car wouldn't start that morning.
I couldn't start when I finally got to work too.
Now I draw the line at the mid 40s.
Since it might get there under mid 40s that is one or 2 days here in Florida.
Hasn't stopped me from riding to work yet.

About 3 years ago M3 and I left Wellsboro Pa. to head home and it was snowing with 30 degrees outside. We headed home which is 210 miles away. I can tell you that was very long miserable ride.

January 1973. I had a job waiting for me in Puerto Rico and wanted to visit my Mother 1st. I left my home in Pleasant Grove UT headed to New Orleans, Did I say it was snowing and I was in snow until the other side of Albuquerque. I had to stop in Mancos Co. at a friends house to clean all the snow muck out of the points chamber on the front of the R 75/5. I had a full Butler Avon fairing on it and I had a sweater, wool shirt long johns leather jacket and snowmobile suit on. I had bought some winter gloves from Harley Davidson, sheepskin lined mittens. I was very comfortable. Temps must have been in the low 20s to high teens.I have been on many cold rides since and loved them tho starting 3 years ago I did get a heated jacket and gloves and now wonder why I waited so long. Still ride in every month and I still live in Utah

A group ride. Four couples from Clearwater, Fla to Key West, Fla in the month of February. When we crossed the Skyway Bridge from St. Petersburg, Fla. The temp at the toll booth was 34 degrees standing still. Many coffee/hot chocolate breaks. Although it was bright & sunny it was the coldest winter on record in Florida at the time. The warmest it got was 50 the whole weekend. We ate at an open air restaurant the first evening, with the only waitress wearing a winter hat and mittens. We wore our full leathers, gloves & whatever kept our ears the warmest.
