What are the must haves for GL1800

I am considering a newer GL1800 trike. I have an 08 with CSC. Someone has made me a great offer for it and I would get a 2012 or better to replace it.
The question is, what are the accessories, or equipment that you would hate to do without.
Also, what would you not waste your money on.

Thanks, Mike

I'm a pretty simple person. Give me a good seat, I have a Russell, extra lighting front and rear, CB, highway pegs, some baker had and foot wings and I'm pretty much good to go. When I'm traveling I normally stop every 100 - 120 miles for gas and a good stretch so for me an aux tank isn't needed.

I'm with MSOCKO3, exactly how our 2012 GW with the CSC viper conversion is set up. Fog lights up front and an air bag in the rear, and we typically do 450 to 500 a day on our trips.

One thing I wouldn't waste my money on, again, is the Honda GPS. The one in a Honda Accord I and was almost as worthless as the one built into the GL. I use a Garmin.
Other wise the thread has this subject covered.

:Agree: The 2012 Wing I rented had the GPS, I was not impressed. I found it cumbersome and just about useless compared to my Garmin Zumo.

Unless I missed something.
No one has mentioned the one must have add on for me that made me keep the trike.

MLB risers.

Up 2 inches 1 back.
or was it??
1 back 2 up??
Its been a year already and Ive forgotten all about them.
Im that comfortable LOL...........
Made the trike ride able for me.
Well worth the $75 bux.

Have to agree, the MLB risers are nice. Highway pegs a must!

Speaking of MLB risers, I tried a set. For me the movement back and in didn't work well, my arms were a little too long which put me in an odd position making my forearms and shoulders hurt. I removed them and tossed them on the work bench, I think I'll put them in the 4 sale section so someone else can make use out of them.

This just shows how we are all very different.
I had to have the bars back and in.
I couldn't ride the trike.
Ive had both shoulders operated on more then once and to be stretched out and apart was so uncomfortable.
I almost out the trike up for sale.
As to highway pegs.
With mine it doesn't matter where I mount them.
My inner legs always hits the cowling.
So for me they are useless.

Next time lets trade parts............LOL

Actually the built in GPS is very useful as long as you supplement it with a Garmin 660 or 665.... I set the OEM zoom to .5 and my Garmin 660 zoomed out to see a much larger area. I got surprised once by a curve that was WAY more aggressive then the GPS showed when zoomed out and I still wanted to see my larger routes. I plan all routes on the Garmin but in the twisties the built in gets lots of attention. No, I don't live by it but I sure give it lots of credit for showing how radical the curves ahead are. :xszpv: :xszpv:

A few specific accessories... To buy or not to buy.

Baker wings.
Trailer hitch.
Fog lights.
12 volt accessory plug in front and in back.
Parking Brake.

If I was getting a new GL1800

1) ABS or Airbag

2) CSC Viper or Cobra XL (They still use ABS function)

3) Upgraded rear brakes

4) CB radio

5) Fog Lights

6) Trailer Hitch

7) Ground Effects

8) Rear Light Bar

9) Highway pegs and Wind Wings

10) Auxiliary fuel tank

Rake kit
If Progressive would wake up and make them for a trike, mono-tubes!
Up for consideration, would be the Wide Front now offered by Hannigan.
Absolutely a + is weight bearing foot fairings to get rid of the rider pegs!
Headlamp modulator and a brake light wig-wag.
BT45 for the front if the wide front is not purchased!
3M protective film on all forward facing surfaces of the trike body and foot fairings. Thought about the 3M spray on but, if it needs replaced every year, I'm to lazy:qpnmt: Also put the film on any surface a foot might mistakenly touch getting on/off the trike-both rider and passenger.

My must have list (2012 Wing with Razor Kit): Kuryakin heel toe shifter; Gear indicator; touring pegs; passenger floorboards with built in flip up touring pegs; rear lighting harness to bring stop lights up to top box as well; built in GPS; CB (I ride in groups a lot); luggage rack for on top of top box; back rest for the pilot; 3M protective clear shields instead on sides of tank and front to tops of rear mudguards; risers to move your arms up and back and in; trike kit must support linked antilock brakes; Rear brake; IRS; membership to this Trike Forum for all the great ideas!

Wish list: the new electric windshield for the Goldwing!

Don't want: Aquashields; fog lights; unnecessary chrome and bling.

MDGeorge - there are quite a few available. I have the GIPro very small unit with a large digital number readout. It is mounted behind one of the front speaker grills, so you can't see it at all - except when it comes on you get a perfect readout through the speaker mesh. I have it in red led for easy visibility even in sunlight. Love it! ThumbUp

I don't have a trike yet and also don't have a Wing yet but I Know it will have to have passenger arm rests and cup holder, gps mount and trailer hitch and more that likely heel toe shifter. On our Voyager, my wife likes the passenger floor boards and foot pegs so she can move her legs around some. She also like the port to charge her cell phone.

Accessories are pretty much a personal decision based on what you feel you like, can't live without and can afford.<br />
<br />
Start with the equipment you want installed at the time of conversion - things like auxillary fuel tank, raked front end, etc. The least expensive time to put them on the trike is at the time of conversion. <br />
<br />
Once you have the trike on the road you can decide the accessories you want and start to add them on. If you're handy, you can install a lot of it yourself. I bought a lot of my accessories through Wing Stuff and watched for when they came on sale.<br />
You'll probably want to personalize your trike so take pics of other trikes you like and then play with ideas - you'll ultimately have exactly what you want.<br />
<br />
As you're doing now, pick a lot of brains on Trike Talk, but do your own homework and research. For instance, some owners don't like the Honda OEM seat, but it may fit you perfectly. Beats the heck out of spending big money on an Ultimate or some other aftermarket brand, if it won't improve your riding comfort.<br />
<br />
The first things I would consider putting on the trike are things that will make your ride safer and more comfortable for you and your passenger.<br />
<br />
Good luck, have fun and ride safely!<br />

I was where you are now 3 months ago. I had a 2004 Wing with a CSC Cobra XL kit installed in 2012. I ended up buying a 2012 Wing with a new Hannigan kit on it. You will love the USB function if you like music, and the heated seat and handgrips are real nice in cold weather. The first thing I added was the CB and my hand held mic, got rid of the stock windshield with that bug catcher vent and installed a Slipstreamer. Had to buy new mounts for my Ergo II pegs because of the Ground Effects, and installed a new auxiliary power plug in the side pocket for my XM.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
Most Wing riders that I have ridden with over the last 35 yrs use the CB a lot, so that was my first purchase. Had no interest whatsoever in a GPS. I have a great Garmin I can use if necessary.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
I don't buy a lot of bling but I did add a cup holder for my lady. <br /><br />
<br /><br />
There is noting else I wish to add to mine. Now I just want to ride it to death cause I love it.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
Oh, I did switch out the front tire with a BT-45 within a month of buying the Trike.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
<br /><br />
I'm sure you will enjoy whatever you decide to add.<br />
<br />
Life is short.

We need to enjoy as much of it as we can.

Good stuff folks.
As some may remember, this thread was started in January before I got the 2012 trike.
I got it in mid February.
May 4, I wrecked it. Been in the shop since. I think I may get it back this weekend.

Mike

A must have for me is RAM mounts. With them I mount the GPS, phone, cup holder and anything else I might want to connect to the bike and be able to take it off later. I have the 2 ball clutch/brake clamp mount on both sides on the trike and the Harley, Ram 2 ball.jpgand a single ball version on both sides on the Triumph. We also have a mount under one of the rear trike armrests to mount Gloria's cup holder.

</div>That's a real bummer. Hope you are okay

For me if I was every to get another 1800, it would have to have Roadsmith's Comfort Controls installed and a number one priority!

After that would be a custom seat, F4+2 tinted windshield and baker wings. Those would be my top requirements.
