vw engine ser# ID

First time trike builder. Just bought 75% built VW trike with a 1600 dual port engine ? may be .Ser# AS6288-- my problem is i can not find the AS prefix in any book. any idea's .Also first time on vw engines

The reference table I use (courtesy of The SAMBA - VW) indicates that the AS 628 8xx cases were a 1978 model motor (AS 611 030 - AS 692 077). That year motor likely began life as fuel injected if imported into the US, but a rebuild could easily have changed heads and gone back to standard carburetion. Motor was originally rated at 50HP, but the carburetion would have upped that by 7 to 10 HP.
