First, Merry Christmas, all! Next, can anyone tell me what is involved in converting a swing axle to an IRS trike, 1600 DP engine. Is this possible?

Hello folks, I suppose I said it all in the title, lol. Was hoping someone here has done this before and can give me a ballpark idea of what's involved. Thank you!

Anything is possible if you have the proper tools and skill set or a fat wallet. Im not sure if anyone has done this but if so hopefully they will post some pics.

I believe I saw a kit for this once at a place called Pacific customs, they sell air-cooled vw stuff. Google it. But I think you need the later model transmission also. Maybe cheaper and easier to just fix whatever issue you're having with your present setup?

So do you have an IRS trike?
And you want to convert a swing trans into an IRS?
Or
Do you want to put the entire swing in a chassis for an IRS?
Or
Do you want to put an IRS into a chassis for a swing?

The kit referenced above is the cut and weld kit to put an IRS into a swing chassis.

Can a swing trans be converted into being IRS......Yes

Can an IRS trans be converted into being a swing....Yes.

Both of those trans conversions take a lot of parts sourced from specific models of core (parts) trans.
It is a lot of work for any of the swap conversions.

If you have an IRS chassis then keep it IRS and get the trans that fits.

Almost ALL swing trans are lower geared and undesirable for a light trike The only exceptions are the 67 and 68 trans.

I have a swing trans and chassis and want to convert it to a later style IRS- I'm working on one (IRS) for a partner and I like the way it feels more solid. My trike has a tendency to grind a bit if I don't ease off the clutch real real slowly, on his it grabs solidly, no grind in the same situation. Also my trike has a really annoying intermittent leak from the inside leftside axle that comes and goes, but when it leaks, it'll leak a pint of fluid in the driveway.
Was just wondering if anyone here has done this conversion (swing trans, chassis to irs, irs trans) and the basic steps they took. Thank you for your comment man.

To convert from swing to an IRS.
You need an IRS trans, cv joints/axles.
The IRS trailing arms, spring plates, torsion springs, spring end caps.

All the parts are a bolt on swap.....except for the inner pivot point for the arms. This is the conversion kit spoken of. It is just the pivot bracket but it is a difficult job. You have to cut into the frame horns and insert the bracket into this hole you made while getting it in location and snug enough fitting (no gaps) to weld the bracket into place.
Is it worth it?......Yes
