I have had my 18 TG about 10 weeks and it is currently at the dealership with a defective voltage regulator. Harley has part on backorder but should have in about 5 days.(already been there 1 1/2 weeks)

Anybody else have this problem?

BTW I installed Wide Sweepers and Comfort Lift and these changes made a huge difference.

Jeez Louise I thought they had this problem fixed but H-D seems to find a way to keep on keeping on with their screw ups. Had a bad voltage regulator on my 2006 when it was six or eight months old and then again on my 2012 when it was only four months old. At least on the 2012 H-D eventually had a recall. Then a couple years ago my 2007 with 80k on it had the voltage regulator go out. Shouldn't have happened to any of these bikes but at least on the 2007 I could somewhat accept it due to age and mileage. The 2006 and the 2012 being so new with such low mileage - no way. Just pizz poor quality control or vendor selection.

And all the above failures happened when I was hundreds of miles from home on a road trip. Gotta love hoping you can make it to the nearest dealer or not have to wait long for a tow.

Good luck getting yours back on the road really soon.

Both the oil cooler and regulator are covered by the black dress cover. As the regulator has fins, heat sinks, the oil cooler hot air flows over it. If you don’t mind the looks when the cover is gone, problem solved.

After installing the oil filter relocation kit, it’s a plumbing night mare. So it fits in with out the cover. Function, not fashion :D !!

Definitely could not hurt to get more (and less hot) air over the regulator. But my '06 and my '07 did not have oil coolers. The '12 did but the fault was significant enough that the moco issued a recall . . . and they don't do that very often. IMO the root of the problem is just a poor quality part and unfortunately there are quite a few on those on these Harleys.

My voltage gauge was reading over 15v. Dealer replaced the gauge. Still reads 15v. So I I put my own meter on to check. Yup , 14.5 . So I am wondering if it was really replaced as the answer was that there all like that !

Have digital on my FLH , so will replace next time the bat wing is removed.

Dont think it was a massive recall, the mother ship just told the dealers to replace the defective ones at n/c as they come in.

The voltage gages on both my T/G's Were as useless as Teats on a Bull....:NoJoke:

As is the air temp gauge  Replaced that with oil temp.

Yea, I forgot about that one on my 11 T/G.......I guess Harley had holes to fill so they just stuck what ever the had at the time laying on the shelf, In them there holes...

Heat is the big destroyer of all electrical parts

Keep in mind a HD regulator shunts electricity not used as heat to ground also;)
